** Seto Kaiba resents Yugi for having dethroned him as the dueling king. He also likely resents the idea that Yugi (or rather, his SuperpoweredEvilSide Yami Yugi) beats his opponents BecauseDestinySaysSo, whereas Kaiba himself has to work hard to beat his opponents -- and HardWorkHardlyWorks. In the anime, he eventually gets over this when he sees Yugi fight ''against'' Yami Yugi and hold his own. In the manga continuity his resentment continues till his duel with Yugi in ''Anime/YuGiOhTheDarkSideOfDimensions''.

** Severus Snape is the series' biggest example of this. He resents and ''loathes'' James for a variety of reasons: James was the BigManOnCampus who was a skilled athlete, handsome and popular on top of being a very skilled wizard along with having a loving family. Snape meanwhile had an abusive father and a neglectful mother, and while a very skilled wizard, he was a CreepyChild with NoSocialSkills and a massive amount of {{Pride}}. Given how James was a notorious prankster and Snape had MoralMyopia, it was only a matter of time before their natural disdain just exploded. James meanwhile hated Snape for embodying every negative aspect of Slytherin and the Dark Arts, though also because he was friends with Lily. Despite this, James was still willing to risk his life to save Snape after his attempts at trying to get the Marauders expelled led to Sirius setting Snape up for a dangerous prank. This just made Snape loathe him more for being in his debt. However, while Snape would double down on his bad behavior (to where Lily finally cut him out of her life), James did mature to where he and Lily went from acquaintances in fifth year to dating by seventh year and marrying a couple years later.

** Rei hates Eriko for having an easier life than her - Eriko was born in wealth and luxury, while Rei was the result of an affair and neither of her parents wanted to claim her and is implied to have grown up in an orphanage. It's why Rei stares at Eriko with pure hatred when they first meet, despite Eriko not done anything to her.

** Yuusuke resented his brother Kosuke for having everything he didn't - success, wealth and a happy family. He had a job at Tamura Productions too, but it's implied he only got it out of Kosuke's kindness. He felt inferior to him so when he finally died, he took over the company and gloated about how he, for once, was the luckier one.

* ''Literature/NinaTanleven'': In ''The Ghost in the Big Brass Bed'', Phoebe Watson was married, has a big old house, and family who loved her, even those she never met. [[spoiler:Carla Bond]] lost her father to suicide, her brother to the streets as a bum, and was raised on the dole through the Great Depression by her mother. She had to ''work'' for years to make something of herself, all while blaming the Fletcher family for her family's hardship and vowing to one day get what she felt she deserved.

** Also from ''VideoGame/Persona4'', the last stages of Yosuke's Social Link reveal that he was envious of the Protagonist, who was able to adjust so well to life in the countryside while he was struggling to find his place, not to mention the Protagonist's popularity while Yosuke himself was initially hated at worst and ignored at best. By the time we learn this, however, he has largely gotten over it.

* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' both subverts this and plays it straight: Though Prince Zuko would initially appear to be one of these characters, his dialogue would seem to reveal that almost all of his anger is directed inward at what he perceives to be his own failings, [[spoiler: allowing him to be much more calm and focused once he makes a HeelFaceTurn]]. However, though she hides it well, Azula's secret resentment of ''Zuko'', and the love their mother felt for him and not for her (At least so she thinks. It's really all in her mind, as her mother was actually worried about her.), ends up contributing greatly to her VillainousBreakdown. The person Zuko resents isn't any of the heroes -- instead, he resents Azula for being a better villain than him, and for getting the approval (Ozai probably isn't capable of anything that could be called "love") of their father. Apparently, said father liked to say that Azula was "born lucky," whereas Zuko was "lucky to be born." [[KickTheDog Jesus]]. [[TheUnfavorite Christ]].

** Princess Luna, angry that ponies enjoyed her sister Celestia's day but slept through her night, embraced her dark side and became [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Nightmare Moon]], intending to reign over [[TheNightThatNeverEnds eternal darkness]]. This gets revisited in the Season 7 episode "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E10ARoyalProblem A Royal Problem]]", where it's revealed both sisters think the other has it easier (and Celestia too has her fantasies of dropping all restraints and ruling unchallenged).
** Sunset Shimmer, the BigBad of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirls'', clearly resents Twilight Sparkle, because she managed to earn everything Sunset desired: adoration, power, and an [[spoiler:alicorn princess position]]. This becomes evident when Twilight's friends praise her for her loyalty and fortitude while she grows closer and closer to a VillainousBreakdown with every word spoken. [[spoiler: Luckily, she pulls a HeelFaceTurn and appears to grow out of it by the time of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks'', learning to accept her loss and instead embracing what she has now: The human versions of the Mane Six and alicorn!Twilight as her friends, the true respect of Canterlot High, and some [[SuperMode sweet]] [[TouchTelepathy magical powers]] on the side.]]

** [[DarkMagicalGirl Starlight Glimmer]], the BigBad of Season 5 has this and then some. It was bad enough that she had already developed deep-rooted [[NeverBeHurtAgain social]] [[FriendlessBackground issues]] [[StartOfDarkness resulting]] from a broken friendship as a filly, which deeply traumatized her. Meeting the Mane Six, Twilight Sparkle [[GreenEyedMonster most especially]], just sent her over the edge. When the Mane Six thwarted her in the Season 5 premiere, she spent the ''entire season'' tracking them down and plotting her revenge against them. Starlight didn't care about why or what it would lead to, she despised Twilight and her friends that much. [[spoiler: Revealing that this is what Starlight greatly desired: [[IJustWantToHaveFriends Friends]]. But her resentment for the Mane Six is so deep she still needs more talking down even after being shown the [[BadFuture horrible consequences]] of her actions. Fortunately, Twilight Sparkle [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath managed to get through]] to Starlight enough to finally make her let go of her resentment and [[HeelFaceTurn give friendship another chance]], which she does, ultimately being forgiven and [[SixthRanger becoming friends]] with the Mane Six]].

* ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'': '''Catra'''. She was raised by [[AbusiveParents Shadow Weaver]] alongside Adora, receiving the most overt and physical mistreatment[[note]]while the 'golden child' was told constantly that she was at fault if her friend "misbehaved"[[/note]]. After Adora's [[HeelFaceTurn defection]] coincided with Catra's recognition for her own talents up to and including Shadow Weaver being forced to give her the promotion planned for Adora, the idea that her own fortunes depended on Adora's defeats took root and metastasized.

* ''WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants'': Plankton has, as his main villainous motivation, resentment of Mr. Krabs's success (and, in turn, the community that ''made'' Mr. Krabs a success), especially in comparison to his own restaurant, hence his ongoing attempts to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Also seems to be reversed at times: Krabs at the very least has a rather intense rivalry with Plankton and is obsessed with gloating to his face. Whenever Plankton seems to have even minor success that makes his own resentment fade, Krabs obsessively tries to destroy him, intent on putting him back in his shadow.

May turn into an ArchNemesis, unless of course [[UnknownRival the hero doesn't notice]]. Which is likely to [[RivalTurnedEvil piss them off even more]]. Or they may [[RedemptionEqualsDeath redeem themselves]] [[HeroicSacrifice somehow]], which is odd if you [[FridgeLogic think]] about it.
