Sweet Gay Baby Jesus! provides examples of:

- Anti-Hero: Lucy leaves Guy to burn to death, but goes back to save the golf club.

- Berserk Button: Jed can protect himself, until he can't, at which point Nathan steps in and 'helps'.
- Big Damn Heroes: You rescue Distressed Damsel, but who'll rescue you?! Oh, right, your boyfriend.
- Bury Your Gays: Averted, The homophobe's the only one to die.
- Cast Full of Gay: Jed, Nathan, Lucy, Mindy, unsurprising, given the subject matter.
- Chekhov's Gun: the golf clubs
- Chekhov's Gunman: Mindy.

- Coming Out Story: Nathan and Lucy deliver theirs as monologues, whilst Mindy's is seen over the course of the play.
- Averted slightly with Jed, who is simply mentioned as having been out from a young age. His parents were 'stupidly accepting'.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Guy Vs. Jed, round one.
- Dean Bitterman: Although never seen on stage, the headmistress changed the school motto to 'Beggars can't be choosers'. Ms. Millar is strangely proud of this fact.
- Does This Remind You Of Anything?: The entire premise is analogous to the battle between sexual freedom and organised religion.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: The LGBT support group literally have to kill to get what they want.
- Esoteric Happy Ending: The author thought the ending the best possible outcome; the audience? Not so much.
- Evil Brit: The first actor to play Guy was this trope made flesh.

- Kill It with Fire: In a not uncontroversial example, a teenager burns to death
- Left for Dead: Lucy goes around Guy to pick up a golf club, and then leaves him to burn. A rare example in that it actually works.
- Mood Whiplash
- Moral Event Horizon: For Guy it's setting fire to the room and holding Hannah inside.
- Ring of Fire: Guy attempts this, at the cost of his own life
- Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: Pretty damn cynical, Guy is beyond redemption, and is better off dead, Mindy may have to abandon one group of friends for another and the assistant head is more concerned with stealing bins than helping her students.
