Expanding description

In platform video games, completely inanimate objects in the ceiling seem to know when a player is approaching and fall down accordingly. And only the player because the scenery just doesn't care about the enemies somehow.

The most common offenders are:
* Stalactites
* Icicles
* OfDoom
* Chandeliers
* Coconuts
* And sometimes a tile or an entire section of a ceiling.

Notice: In RealLife, falling icicles kill dozens of people each year, although it's the mass of the upper part of the icicle, not the pointy end that's lethal.

Subtrope of MalevolentArchitecture and part of EverythingIsTryingToKillYou. Note that this trope doesn't include non-inanimate enemies (like Thwomp in Franchise/SuperMarioBros series) with that kind of behavior, nor does it include Death Traps which look like they're deliberately made to do their thing.

See also CollapsingCeilingBoss, where a boss attacks by causing things to drop from the ceiling. For Stalagmite Spite - things that come from below instead of falling - see SpikesOfDoom.

In platform It's been well established that video games, completely game protagonists just can't catch a break, and that even the most mundane of objects seem to have it out for them. One common manifestation of this is that certain inanimate objects in will hang ever so precariously from the ceiling seem -- but will wait patiently to know when a player is approaching and actually fall down accordingly. And only until the moment the player because walks under them.

As if that wasn't enough, these objects can typically distinguish between friend and foe -- most mooks and [=NPCs=] can stand beneath them with total impunity. Once
the scenery just doesn't care about player triggers them to fall, however, these hazards can sometimes still interact with the environment by taking out enemies somehow.

or destroying other objects in their path, which can make for some quite interesting puzzles. If they don't just vanish and respawn endlessly after falling, they may even get stuck in the ground and become platforms you can stand on.

The actual object that falls can vary, as this type of hazard can be adapted to suit just about any setting.
The most common offenders are:
* Stalactites
* Icicles
* OfDoom
*
include actual stalactites in Underground Levels or icicles in a SlippySlideyIceWorld, but with a little creativity, you can find variants just about anywhere: falling coconuts in a PalmtreePanic level, falling boulders on DeathMountain, Chandeliers
* Coconuts
* And sometimes a tile or an entire section of a ceiling.
