Somari is a 1994 pirate
Famicom cartridge by Hummer Team that combines
Sonic the Hedgehog and
Mario. Ostensibly a port of the
Genesis original with Sonic's sprite changed, the level design is entirely unique, using very few elements from either the Genesis or
Master System game. Unfortunately, due to hardware limitations and the fact that it's a pirate cart, there is a very large amount of slowdown. Add to this slippery controls, iffy hit detection, and a relatively small screen,
it becomes much harder than it would be otherwise.Several different versions were produced for the black market, using new sprites. These include
Sonic 3D Blast 5* which was not in 3D
,
Family Kid,
Sonic And Knuckles 5* which did not have Knuckles
,
Sonic 3D Blast 6,
Doraemon and
The Hummer.
This work contains examples of:
- "Blind Idiot" Translation: The level select screen misspells Spring Yard Zone as "Spring Yand Zone" and Special Stage as "Spacial Stage". Also, Hummer Team themselves disguised themselves as Somari Team for this game, but the cartridge misspells it as "Someri Team".
- Chaos Emeralds: Averted, as they only appear in the ending.
- Character Title
- Check Point Starvation: Hummer Team didn't bother porting the check points from the original version.
- Crossover
- Dolled-Up Installment: Inevitably, this is the case with all of the hacks.
- Down the Drain: Labyrinth Zone.
- Dummied Out: Scrap Brain Zone is conspicuously absent. As are the Sprint Shoes, the bonus levels, the Chaos Emeralds...
- Fake Difficulty
- Game-Breaking Bug: The game can crash on Labyrinth Zone Act 2 if you ride a rising platform into some spikes.
- The Goomba: Watch out! Enemies in this game, owing to the glitchiness, are much more difficult than in the original.
- Goomba Stomp
- Green Hill Zone
- Lethal Lava Land: Marble Zone.
- Obvious Pirate Cart
- Oxygenated Underwater Bubbles
- Pinball Zone: Spring Yard Zone.
- Portmanteau: Somari, of Sonic and Mario, of course.
- Sequel Hook/Shout Out(?): "I WILL BE BACK."
- Springs Springs Everywhere
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Somari himself is this to both Mario and Sonic, and the subsequent hacks are this to Somari.
- The Points Mean Nothing
- Title Theme Drop: Just like the original game, this is used for the invincibility powerup.
- Wheel o' Feet
- A Winner Is You: Essentially the bad ending of the original game, which shows Dr. Robotnik juggling the Chaos Emeralds. Because they're nowhere else to be found in this version, the good ending is Dummied Out.
