Smash X 5000 is a cartoonist on deviantArt who makes goofy comics, either with his own characters or in the form of
Fan Art. On Flipnote Hatena, though, his cartoons are popular and praised for their slick animation and attention to detail. He collectively refers to all of his works as
Smash X Cartoons, though there are some series within that title.
Vacation Gone Wrong is a graphic novel about a group of friends (Smash, Kayla, and Pierre) traveling to an island with an odd history.
Yoshi VS is a flipnote series where Yoshi faces off against various 'opponents', even though most of them are inanimate objects. Most opponents are picked from fan requests, letting them feel like they have importance to the series.
- Animation Bump: The longer episodes of Yoshi VS often have better animation than the shorter ones. Especially true when the opponent is a character and not an object.
- Art Evolution: Compare his older artwork
with his current artwork. Other than the obvious style changes, things are more smooth, detailed, and consistent than they initially were. - Badass Longcoat:
- Yami Smash wore one for a while, now only rarely appearing in it.
- Dr. Calistro's labcoat is pretty awesome.
- Brand X: Various comics and pictures use this. For example, Generic Cola
- Butt Monkey: Kayla fills this role in comics, and Yoshi in Yoshi VS.
- Chase Scene: Missed the Bus is an entire flipnote of this.
- Darker and Edgier: Vacation Gone Wrong.
- Item Get: Kayla does this pose after getting her Room key in Vacation Gone Wrong. It's immediately questioned.
- Fan Art: A lot of his artwork falls into this category.
- Mad Scientist: Enzo Calistro is a scientist with many inventions, but it's said he tried to kill Natives who stole from him.
- Narrating The Obvious: The captions in Vacation Gone Wrong often restate what characters said.
- Non-Lethal K.O.: Kayla is shown to do this often in earlier comics. It's used less often recently. Lampshaded in Vacation Gone Wrong more than once. Her fainting is often mocked by Smash, even though she has yet to faint in the comic.
- Noodle Incident: Smash somehow blowing up Pierre's dad's car is mentioned, but never explained.
- Never Say "Die": Death is rarely seen. The worst that ever happens is a Non-Lethal K.O.. Averted with Vacation Gone Wrong. Death is mentioned and implied.
- Panty Shot: Kayla has a few of these, though in animations, they are usually very minor, single frame shots.
- Ridiculously Human Robots: Dr. Calistro in Vacation Gone Wrong. He also has clones of himself.
- Slap Stick: The Yoshi VS series. Some comics fall under this, as well as Slapstick Knows No Gender.
- What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome?: After Pierre explains the history of Tikiwa Island to Smash, Kayla asks Smash what he thought of it. He's not impressed.
