"Rob Liefeld, you will never not be popular!"
Rob Liefeld is a comics "artist." He was known for his unique style ( exaggerated anatomy, pouches, weird penciling lines, pouches, bizarre angles, and pouches), which managed to achieve quite a bit of popularity. However, this "uniqueness" was squashed when, noticing its popularity, lots of other artists began to copy it in hopes of making as much money as Liefeld.
Once all the stuff that was considered "unique" about his work was splattered everywhere, everyone started getting sick of it, both due to its proliferation and also due to the various flaws in it. Massive Hype Backlash followed. Rob Liefeld had the distinction of being one of the most influential and successful artists, and yet one of the most disliked ones. One of the pioneers of the Nineties Anti Hero, he holds the distinction of being quite disliked by the comic community. If you don't know why, see these 40 reasons . And imagining other works in his style is... disturbing ◊.
Note that his writing wasn't particularly stellar either; some of the stories he wrote were quite...lacking, to put it very politely.
Tropes exhibited by Liefeld and his works:
- Author Appeal (Aside from his love of drawing highly deformed women, this also extends to male characters, for example, [1]
◊.)
- Badass Normal (Many of his "superheroes" are just guys with guns.)
- BFG
- Boobs Of Steel
- Captain Ersatz (A lot of his works feature this, including...)
- Deadpool (Original creator, started him as a ripoff of Deathstroke before Joe Kelly and Fabian Nicieza turned him into the loon we know and love.)
- Fighting American. (Duh.)
- Fighting American wasn't created by him. He was basically a parody of Captain America back in the 50's, before he got inexplicably revived by Liefeld.
- Newmen (similiar to original X-Men squad)
- Doom's IV (similar to the Fantastic Four)
- Smash
◊
- Youngblood (Teen Titans, with a few Marvel characters thrown in)
- Dark Age (Back then, he was king.)
- Dark Age Of Supernames
- Darker And Edgier
- Deader Than Disco (His art style.)
- Designated Hero (Just as an example, the first issue of Youngblood has one "hero" explode an unarmed dictator's head...after telling him he admires what he's accomplished.)
- Eyes Always Shut (Nine times out of ten anyway.)
- Fallen Creator
- Fan Disservice
- Guns Akimbo
- Glowing Eyes Of Doom (Even on the "good guys")
- Hands In Pockets (Seems to have an aversion to drawing feet)
- Hatedom
- Heroic Build (Yes, it's rather standard for a comic book artist but Liefield has the noted tendency to just throw muscles everywhere.)
- Impossibly Cool Clothes (Minus the "cool" part.)
- Liefeld is Untalented
- Male Gaze (Oh so much.)
- Memetic Mutation
- pouches pouches pouches pouches
- "LIIIIEEEEEFFFFFFEEEEELLLLLDDD!!!!"
- Youngblood's disease
- BLOODPOUCH.

- From the spanish parodic comics weblog ADLO
(who stands for "Assosiaton in Defense of Liefeld and Others") came "ROB!" and "ĦAVIV DLEFEILD!", each time they refere to the man.
- Ms Fanservice (Practically every female character.)
- Shading into Ms. Fandisservice (unless wondering where someone keeps her internal organs and how she makes her knees bend backward is your thing).
- My Nayme Is
- Nineties Anti Hero
- Over The Shoulder Pose
- Shoulders Of Doom (Sometimes only one of them.)
- Signature Style
- Small Name Big Ego (Used to be, now is more Self Deprecating Humor.)
- This troper met him at a con, and he is one of the nicer comics professionals ever encountered. This is probably a defense tactic.
- Being dragged in an out of court by industry vets probably helped, too.
- So Bad Its Good (Some of his work.)
- So Bad Its Horrible (Ignoring the art style, some stories the guy wrote were just plain awful.)
- Stripperiffic
- The Nineties (When he was the most successful and at his peak of popularity.)
- They Just Didnt Care (Certainly, he wasn't altogether a terrible artist, but that doesn't stop it from looking like he put zero effort into making things look decent.)
- Too Many Belts (Make that pouches.)
- Something needs to hold all those pouches, so this still counts.
- What Could Have Been - Rob Liefeld had many interesting ideas. Unfortunately, his actual writing didn't do him justice. Not to mention the fact that a vast majority of his storylines never got property resolved because he got bored with them and moved on to something else. Additionally, he really did have a huge potential talent when he first got into the industry, but he got popular and no one made him work toward fulfilling it.
