"Rob Liefeld, you will never not be popular!"
Rob Liefeld is a comics "artist." He was known for his unique style ( exaggerated anatomy, pouches, weird penciling lines, pouches, bizarre angles, and pouches), which managed to achieve quite a bit of popularity. However, this "uniqueness" was squashed when, noticing its popularity, lots of other artists began to copy it in hopes of making as much money as Liefeld.
Once all the stuff that was considered "unique" about his work was splattered everywhere, everyone started getting sick of it, both due to its proliferation and also due to the various flaws in it. Massive Hype Backlash followed. Rob Liefeld had the distinction of being one of the most influential and successful artists, and yet one of the most disliked ones. One of the pioneers of the Nineties Anti Hero, he holds the distinction of being quite disliked by the comic community. If you don't know why, see these 40 reasons . Note that his writing wasn't particularly stellar either; some of the stories he wrote were quite...lacking, to put it very politely.

- Fighting American wasn't created by him. He was basically a parody of Captain America back in the 50's, before he got inexplicably revived by Liefeld.

- Designated Hero (Just as an example, the first issue of Youngblood has one "hero" explode an unarmed dictator's head...after telling him he admires what he's accomplished.)

- From the spanish parodic comics weblog ADLO (who stands for "Assosiaton in Defense of Liefeld and Others") came "ROB!" and "ĦAVIV DLEFEILD!", each time they refere to the man.

- This troper met him at a con, and he is one of the nicer comics professionals ever encountered. This is probably a defense tactic.
- Being dragged in an out of court by industry vets probably helped, too.
- So Bad Its Good (Some of his work.)
- So Bad Its Horrible (Ignoring the art style, some stories the guy wrote were just plain awful.)

- They Just Didnt Care (Certainly, he wasn't altogether a terrible artist, but that doesn't stop it from looking like he put zero effort into making things look decent.)

- What Could Have Been - Rob Liefeld had many interesting ideas. Unfortunately, his actual writing didn't do him justice. Not to mention the fact that a vast majority of his storylines never got property resolved because he got bored with them and moved on to something else. Additionally, he really did have a huge potential talent when he first got into the industry, but he got popular and no one made him work toward fulfilling it.
