alt title(s): Wouldnt Hit A Girl; Would Not Hit A Girl
"How could you? I'm a woman!"
- Catwoman's best line. Right before she kicks Batman's ass.

On average, men have greater upper body strength than women. Because most people don't actually understand concepts like "average" very well, in a lot of people's minds this turns into "any given man is much, much stronger than any given woman, always." And since a true hero never uses his strength against the weak, and all women are supposedly weak compared to him, it follows that a hero must never use physical violence against any woman, ever. The trope is well-meaning in intention, but in practice it quickly becomes ridiculous when the woman is obviously a major threat and only the token girl in the cast is allowed to hit her. (The cynical might point out that this philosophy functions as a handy way for the male character to avoid the humiliation of being beaten by a woman; if he refuses to fight against women, there's no way for a woman to ever prove she could defeat him at his full strength...)

Due to Media Watchdogs, this trope is quietly applied to many cartoons. The trope is often paraded in older shonen anime, where characters will say something along the lines of "I normally hate hitting women but..." before they over power a female character. This, coupled with the fact that many older shonen anime have a tendency to chickify an Action Girl, makes this trope go on unchallenged. Often, characters in these anime who have no qualms hitting a woman are portrayed as honorless Darwinist villains. Being the hero however, he may have to find some way to drive off or incapacitate his female opponent without actually hitting her. Perhaps turning her modesty against her...

Averting the trope hasn't become old-hat just yet, although it's considered an "equal opportunity" kind of violence. It's usually pointed out before it's done, usually with some variation of "Well, you're no lady." On the other hand, a realistic full-on punch to the face is pretty rare.

A common subversion (in the right kind of story) is for a man who says or would say this to be turned into a woman, allowing him/her to go ahead. Sometimes a man will even turn himself into a woman just to get around this card, or even use it as his/her own.

Occasionally an Affably Evil villain will express this when facing a heroic Action Girl. This is almost always treated as deeply patronising, and edging towards Stay In The Kitchen.

Slightly less common in fighting anime, although having a character refuse to fight girls is usually a way of showing they have a nice side.

Often a form of Heroic Vow. Compare Would Not Shoot A Civilian, which often encompasses this when the women are not combatants. Also compare Rape Is A Special Kind Of Evil. Contrast with Would Hit A Girl, where the character displays that they're not sexist in this aspect.
