* ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'':
** ''Literature/{{Dragonlance}}'' has kani dolls, simple figurines of people or animals made by rustic folk across Krynn. They're meant to be good-luck charms that enhance an ability associated with their shape - rabbit-shaped dolls are associated with speed, lions with courage, turtles with defense, etc. - and some have indeed been enchanted by hedge mages to grant a tangible stat bonus to their young owners, and give them a ''protection from evil'' effect when their child sleeps at night. But about one in ten kani dolls ends up possessed by an evil spirit, becoming animate, murderous monsters whose bites ''drain'' the associated ability from their victims. Other evil kani dolls are created on purpose, and enchanted to animate a set time after being gifted to someone.
** The ''TabletopGame/{{Ravenloft}}'' setting gives us the doll {{golem}}, which looks like a child's doll but can serve as a hidden guardian... or assassin. Another creature is the "carrionette," malevolent, self-aware marionette puppets that can use magical needles to [[GrandTheftMe trade bodies with living people]] so they can enjoy being flesh and blood. They only associate with other monsters in return for the prospect of being given a victim to take for their own. The most dangerous of these is Maligno, the darklord of Odiere.

** It also has "Carrionettes", which are malevolent self-aware marionette puppets that can use magical needles to trade bodies with living people. Their true purpose in existence is to swap bodies with some poor sucker, so they can enjoy being flesh and blood, and thusly they only associate with other monsters in return for the prospect of being given a victim to take for their own. The most dangerous of these is Maligno, the darklord of Odiere.
