The ninja world is at war... whatever.
Temporary summary courtesy of Anime News Network:
Rokujou Miharu, the Master of Apathy, was just a normal boy living a normal life planning to own a normal restaurant. After being pestered by his classmate Aizawa Kouichi and his English teacher Kumohira to join the ninja club time and again, Miharu is attacked by a group of ninjas and learns of the Book of Knowledge a.k.a. hijutsu dwelling within him and that Kouichi and Kumohira are actually ninjas. With the strongest power of Nabari(ninja world) inside him and dangerous ninjas out to kidnap him, can Miharu's life of indifference remain, or will he be forced out of his days of apathy...
Provides Examples Of:
- Absurdly Powerful Student Council (Present at Alya Academy although it turns out they're all being manipulated, first by an adult, then by one of their own.)
- Action Girl (Raimei, various ninja girls and women.)
- Afraid Of Needles (Kumohira's irrational fear of... vehicles of all sorts. Apparently he used to be an award-winning choirboy in Ireland, but being forcibly brought over to Japan in an airplane traumatized him so much he became tonedeaf.)
- Ambiguous Gender (Subverted. the reader (and even some characters, apparently) start out believing that Yoite is a boy. Later it turns out that he's actually... intersexual. It doesn't really matter in the long run, though, and isn't gone into in much detail, only the readers now know another reason for his angst and identity issues.)
- Angst Dissonance (mostly Yoite.)
- Art Evolution (The art in the manga became more sophisticated and pretty with time, though recently the characters' bodies look more and more like stick figures.)
- Badass Bookworm (Aizawa Kouichi seems like a mild-mannered and well-spoken young man often taken aback by his friends' quirks and isn't the best at ninja techniques...except when push comes to shove, he becomes a cool, level-headed, and actually professional ninja who doesn't hesitate to kill, brainwash, and do whatever it takes to free himself from the curse of immortality, even if it means siding with the enemy village.)
- Badass Longcoat (Yoite is almost never seen without some sort of thick, black coat. He won't take it off, even if it's the middle of summer or if he's soaking wet.)
- Big Eater (Yoite can be seen eating huge amounts of food in the background of various scenes. He'll eat just about anything since his Kira skill is robbing him of all his senses, and has already taken his sense of taste.)
- Blue Bishonen Ghetto (Every major and minor male character under 30 is attractive. No exceptions.)
- Blade Reflection (Raikou in the anime opening.)
- Bland Name Product (According to the anime, Yukimi uses software like Odobe Photograph, Mouton Anti Virus 2015, Saikrosoft Sentence/EXL/Autolock/Postman, and Ninja Seiden.)
- In the manga, Kotarou is seen playing with a Somy handheld game resembling a PSP.
- Blessed With Suck Both Miharu and Yoite, of course. Also Kouichi and Shijima.
- Blood From The Mouth Yoite does this a few good times, generally after overexerting himself with Kira.
- Cessationof Existence Yoite. Or Is It?
- Character Focus (Yoite and Miharu's relationship is very much the focus of the series for a rather long time - possibly to the extent of Yoite being considered a one-ninja Spotlight Stealing Squad.)
- Creepy Twins I'd say Makoto and Itsuwari of Kasa.
- Cross Dressing Voices (both Miharu and Yoite are voiced by female voice actresses.)
- Crowning Moment Of Awesome Yukimi's a pretty awesome guy, but you realize that he's just outright badass when he's fighting Kasa's Makoto and Itsuwari; his arm's severed clean off, but he still smashes Itsuwari right into the ground, and then proceeds to take his gun from his own discarded hand and shoot Itsuwari in the head, point blank, complete with an awesome One Liner. Then, to seal it off with a Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming, he's ready to Go Out With A Smile, since he feels that Yoite at least got to really 'live.'
- Cute Shotaro Boy (Miharu, who is very much aware of his own cuteness and is not above using it to his own advantage, or just to torment people.)
- Dangerous Forbidden Technique (Yoite's Kira, Miharu's Shinrabanshou, a number of others)
- Died In Your Arms Tonight
- Really, there are a lot of death tropes that could apply just to that scene.
- Deus Angst Machina (arguably, Yoite)
- Dysfunction Junction (Most main characters have either a horrible traumatic past, or a horrible traumatic present. Or both.)
- Elaborate University High (the Alya Academy)
- Enigmatic Minion (Yoite)
- Expecting Someone Taller Raimei was definitely not expecting tiny, scrawny, undeniably weak Miharu to be the keeper of the Shinrabanshou.
- Face Heel Turn (Miharu joining the Kairoushuu, and his friends' willingness to help him even after he's apparently betrayed Banten village.)
- Facial Markings (Miharu, whenever the Shinrabanshou is "activated")
- Fan Nickname Nabari no WOE. Pedo-sensei for Thobari, and Owlzawa, Oldzawa, and Shotazawa for Kouichi's various forms..
- Fashion Victim Villain (Raikou for sure, except for the outright "villain" part. His work clothes include something like a denim vest, a hakama over jeans, and sandals. His casual clothes are canonly recognized as really, really, really terrible. He has seriously considered buying a coat of gold sequins. And one with giant stars across it. And has worn a shirt with huge feathers hanging off the back.)
- Foe Yay (Miharu and Yoite start out like this, but are really, really bad at acting like foes, and it quickly blossoms into full-fledged Ho Yay, especially after Miharu's Face Heel Turn. There's some minor Foe Yay between Kumohira and Yukimi too. Not to mention the rather creepy scene where Hattori is practically hitting on Yoite - "You really are diligent and smart... as well as beautiful.")
- Genki Girl (Raimei, though she has her angsty moments)
- Giving Someone The Pointer Finger Pretty much any time Kira is used.
- Go Out With A Smile Yoite, in both versions. It's- yeah.
- Gory Discretion Shot "His face... Miharu's face is gone."
- Handsome Lech (Fuuma Kotarou)
- Highly Visible Ninja (Averted: ninja actually sneak around and kill people in very good disguises.)
- Ho Yay (Oh boy... Yoite and Miharu, Raikou and Gau, Yoite and Yukimi, Kumohira and Miharu...)
- I Just Want To Be Normal Miharu. Kouichi and Shijima, where 'normal' means 'able to die.' Yoite in that he'd like to have a gender.
- Incurable Cough Of Death (one symptom of Yoite's condition)
- Ki Attacks (Yoite inflicts damage by forcing some of his life force into the opponent, and can do anything from slice a person in half to bring people out of comas.)
- Laser Guided Amnesia (Seems to occur a lot whenever the Shinrabanshou is used - see "ten years ago". And after Miharu used the shinrabanshou in chapter 51, everyone apparently has this regarding everything pertaining to Yoite.)
- Last Request Okonomiyaki.
- Laying On A Hillside Yoite and Miharu in the anime's second ending theme.
- Let Them Die Happy (The last thing Miharu says to Yoite is "I'll make okonomiyaki for you again sometime," implying that they'll have a long and peaceful future together, before Yoite dissolves into dust and Miharu erases his existence (which isn't technically death, I suppose, but it serves the same function - Yoite went out with a smile on his face).)
- Yoite wasn't erased in the anime. Use of Kira turns the body to dust on expiry, in both versions.
- Loners Are Freaks Yoite, until he and Miharu grow attached.
- Lost In Translation It'll be interesting to see how the English manga handles Sora's confusion over whether to use ore or watashi.
- Memetic Molester Hattori may have risen to this, thanks to all the. Neck-touching. And his 'praise' of Yoite.
- New Transfer Student Raimei's case is a little strange in that she just sort of...invades. The other students seem to love her, though.
- Nice Hat (Yoite's giant cap. Some fans have called this series "The Hat Anime." He loses it surprisingly often for something so iconic, though.)
- Ninja (Almost everybody.)
- Noodle People (Especially with the Art Evolution.)
- One Head Taller Yoite and Miharu may be the most obvious example - could even be a case of Huge Teenager Tiny Teenager.
- Overtook The Manga (According to some, led to a bad case of Adaptation Decay.)
- Parental Abandonment Miharu, and indeed many of the cast, have dead parents; Kazuhiko and Kazuho Yukimi had a runaway mom and an abusive dad. Yoite's mother died when he was an infant and his father was horribly cruel, even before the attempted murder.
- Paper Thin Disguise (In a small extra in one of the volumes, Raikou pretends to be Yoite by putting on his coat and hat. Gau comments that Raikou's pretty pink hair makes the disguise totally ineffective. Yoite then enters the room and freaks out, thinking that there's a Doppelganger before him. Perhaps Yoite's just dumb, or it's Rule Of Funny at work.)
- Phenotype Stereotype (Averted: Kumohira is partly Irish, and he does have blue eyes, but with dark hair instead of blond.)
- Picky Eater (Miharu lives on a diet of mostly sweets and liquids, which would explain why he weighs all of 77 pounds.)
- The Promise (Miharu to Yoite, Kumohira to Miharu)
- Samurai (Raimei, Raikou)
- Rapunzel Hair The Shinrabanshou's humanoid appearance.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old (Kouichi and Shijima.)
- Red Eyes Take Warning (Kouichi - while he apparently isn't evil, he's certainly more ruthless than he appears in the beginning, and he's definitely planning something behind his team's back. Plus, he's immortal, and not exactly human.)
- Red String Of Fate (Possible variant - it's never stated to be red, and it's drawn as being tied to the index finger, but after erasing Yoite, for some time Miharu feels as though there's a thread connecting him to something - or someone - elsewhere. He seems to get over it after a while.)
- Reluctant Hero (When Yoite comes into the picture, though...)
- Sealed Evil In A Can
- Secret Identity (Many ninja/samurai in Nabari have various jobs/occupations in the "surface world".)
- Ship Tease (mostly with Miharu and Yoite. Just watch the second ending sequence of the anime.)
- Sleep Cute (Miharu and Yoite in the aforementioned anime ending.)
- Snow Means Love Yoite's death/erasure in the manga. Whether it be platonic or otherwise, a very deep love is shown there.
- Tear Jerker (Two words: Chapter 50, combined with Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming. And arguably the final scene of the anime.)
- The immediate aftermath of Chapter 50 might count too. The pain Yukimi is obviously going through can be rather wrenching to read - the same goes for Miharu's reaction, especially his Not So Stoic breakdown. "I didn't want to erase that person's existence... because I wanted us to live together... so why did I choose this..." "If that person's memories or remembrance were left, I would surely... not be able to live..." And then he claws at his throat. And bursts into tears.)
- Chapter 61 is both this and a Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming.
- Theme Naming (The names of the Shimizu siblings, Raikou and Raimei, mean "lightning" and "thunder," respectively. Though unrelated to the Shimizu family, Gau's name means "rain shower.")
- Most of the characters are named after some sort of weather. Yoite means "evening breeze", Kumohira means "calm cloud", and Fuuma means "wind demon". Yukimi has the character for "snow", and Kouichi has the character for "rainbow". Also, while not technically weather, Miharu's name contains the character for "spring".
- Miharu's name actually has the character for "clear weather" instead, so it counts. (晴, not 春.)
- Likely Kazuhiko and Kazuho.
- Makoto and Itsuwari ('truth' and 'lie' respectively), Kasa's Creepy Twins.
- The Stoic (Miharu)
- The Woobie (Yoite)
- Wall Glower (Yoite does this in volume 6 of the manga.)
- White Haired Pretty Boy (Kouichi)
- White Haired Pretty Girl (Shijima)
- Who Wants To Live Forever Kouichi and Shijima are pretty desperate to escape from this.
- Yamato Nadeshiko (Ichiki... or is she?)
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair (While most characters seem to have plausible hair colors, Raimei's brother Raikou has hot pink hair, though it used to be blond (not to mention that Raimei calls his pinkness "stupid"). Minami Juuji's is a green-blue. Shijima has white hair which is justified since she's actually a white cat, and Kouichi is a White Haired Pretty Boy. Again justified since he's actually a snowy owl.)
