This cow doesn't take any bull.
Lisa: Bart, that's tomorrow night's dinner!
Bart: You're tomorrow night's dinner.
Lisa: MOOOM, Bart took what I said and made it into an insult!

Describe No, You here.

No, ''You'' describe No, You here! ...Strange.

The act of replying to an insult by simply saying "No, you!" or something similar, meaning that said insult applies more to the person giving it than the person receiving it.

Omnipresent in schools, especially middle to high schools. Among adults, it's generally considered to be a fairly weak riposte, though in some cases it may still manage to be humorous (if only due to the speaker's sheer lack of wit and creativity or responding to an innocuous statement with a random insult).

Similar comebacks:

  • "I know you are, but what am I?"
  • "It takes one to know one!"
  • The childhood classic, "I'm rubber, you're glue, whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you!"
  • "You are the one who is [X]!" and its variant, "It is you who is [X]!" Bonus points if calling a person [X] is completely nonsensical.
  • "Your mom/face/butt/ass is [X]!"
  • "So's your old man!"
  • "Well, look who's talking!"
  • "I've met bad guys better than you."
  • "Pot. Kettle. Black."
  • The "adult" equivalent: "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."
    • Similarly: "Are you sure you're not just projecting?"
  • "Right back at you!"
  • "It's the other way around."
  • "[X] says otherwise."
A common gag is for someone to make a Your Mom joke to their own sibling and get this response, only for them to both notice the irony a moment later. A slightly sharper sibling might just retort "she's your mom too!" in the first place.

Sometimes this is used as a Pre-Asskicking One-Liner or a Shut Up, Hannibal!. See also "You!" Exclamation, Lame Comeback, Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head, I Will Show You X!, Argument of Contradictions, [Verb] This!, Volleying Insults, and At Least I Admit It.

  • In Black Clover, the anime version of the fight between Asta and Yami versus Dante has the Anti Magic Devil cap it off with this trope. In this particular instance, it's played for awesomeness.

(Yami passess his katana to Asta, who infuses it with Anti-Magic and prepares to cut down Dante)
Anti Magic Devil: Yeah. For you.

Ichigo catches Grimmjow's hand and throws his own words back at him.
Ichigo: It would be boring if my mask broke? Don't make me laugh!
    (slashes Grimmjow across the chest)
Ichigo: That's my line, Grimmjow! It would be boring otherwise, so don't undo your sword release!

"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — 'No, you move.'"

Saori, however, assumes Yuzu thinks Anzu's behavior is acceptable, and protests; Saori's use of this trope is proof that the argument is devolving into a shouting match.

The next day, he issued his statement regarding the incident, in which he said "This indictment is the abuse of power here."
  • An uncomfortable number of political debates can sink to this level, usually because one wing knows more about a certain issue than the other. It's not uncommon to hear accusations of propaganda and scare-mongering from representatives who use similar tactics to get voters on their side.
  • Invoked and denied during the Nuremburg Trials. The International Military Tribunal explicitly denied the defendants' use of the tu quoque argument (literally Latin for "you too") as a defense. In other words, accusing their accusers of similar acts was not a defense against having committed said acts. For instance, the death of the majority of the 200,000 malnourished and deathly-ill German soldiers taken prisoner at Stalingrad (who were not treated with the high degree of care that would have been required for them to recover and survive) did not excuse the German Army's decision to kill 3 million Soviet POWs through thirst, starvation, exposure, and disease (successfully killing 2/3 of that number before the SS claimed the survivors, using them to implement The Holocaust or working them to death as slaves).
  • In the third presidential debate of 2016, when Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump of being a "puppet" for the Russian government, Trump furiously interrupted her with the retort, "No puppet! No puppet! You're the puppet!"
    • President Trump remained on-brand for the first 2020 presidential debate, by responding to many of Biden's credible claims with: "I didn't X... you did". It was not an edifying experience.
  • German satirist Kurt Tucholsky effectively did this 1929 with a Prussian anti-tripe (says anti-porn, read anti-any liberal viewpoint) law. He shoots it into pieces and at the end quotes from it: "Tripe must be worthless in each regard. Tripe must be disgusting to its uncleanliness. That's it. This law falls under itself."
  • E3 2019 gives us a more wholesome example than most, with Keanu Reeves responding to an audience member calling him "breathtaking" by pointing at him and saying "You're breathtaking! You're all breathtaking!"
  • Among psychological abusers, a common way to deflect accusations is to combine Victim-Blaming with Playing the Victim Card: Think of what a terrible time this poor abuser must be having with all these cruel people accusing them of abuse! In other words, "I'm not the abuser, you're the abuser!" This is common enough that it's been given the Fun with Acronyms nickname DARVO: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender.
  • During the Cold War, American criticisms of the Soviet Union's political repression were so routinely responded to with "And you are lynching Negroes" ("А у вас негров вешают" in Russian) that it became a Catchphrase of the Soviet ambassadors.
  • Whataboutism or Whataboutery is a variant of this; when presented with an accusation, someone using this doesn't simply reverse the original accusation, but instead attempts to shift the conversation to a new topic where the accuser can be shown to have fallen short, or is flatly guilty of something. To pick as non-political an example as possible - see the linked page for those - consider something like:
Adam: I cannot believe you didn't do the washing-up - I asked you twice!
Brendan: Well, you didn't fill up the car the last time you used it.
Adam: (Beat) That's true, but it's not what we were talking about, which is the fact that we have food here and no clean cutlery to eat it with!

You're deposed!

King Henry IV confronts the pope regarding some of the new policies implemented, and plans to have said pope deposed. The pope, however, uses his new power in an attempt to depose the emperor. Both parties find themselves trying and failing to depose one another back to back.
