alt title(s): Mercedes Thompson A series of fantasy novels by Patricia Briggs set in the Tri-Cities in Washington State. In the universe of Mercy Thompson, fantasy creatures like werewolves, vampires, and faeries have been in hiding for centuries, and are only recently emerging.
Mercy Thompson herself is a mechanic by day, but she is also a walker - a Native American shapeshifter who can turn into a coyote at will. She was raised by werewolves, and has strong connections with the werewolf community. She also has links with vampires and fae - she fixes cars for the local vampire seethe, and her mentor is a gremlin (or calls himself one, at any rate).
There are currently four published books. The first three books each focus on a different kind of preternatural creature. Moon Called focuses on werewolves, Blood Bound deals with vampires, and Iron Kissed focuses on fae. The fourth book, Bone Crossed was released in February of 2009, and the series is set to have at least seven. All the novels are narrated by Mercy.
An offshoot of the series, set in the same world with some of the same characters, is the "Alpha and Omega" series, featuring Charles Cornick (the Alpha werewolf) and his mate Anna (the Omega werewolf). Omegas are rare werewolves who are (a) neither dominant nor submissive, making them an exception to the usual pack structure, and (b) tend to be peacemakers and keep other wolves calm. So far there is one novella, "Alpha and Omega", featuring them in the compilation book On The Prowl, and two novels, Cry Wolf and Hunting Grounds. The novella is set in Chicago and, Cry Wolf is set in Montana, and Hunting Grounds is set in Seattle. "Alpha and Omega" takes place during the events of Moon Called, and Cry Wolf takes place shortly afterwards, as Cry Wolf opens with the funeral of a character who died at the end of Moon Called. Hunting Grounds takes place after the events of Moon Called but before the werewolves go public at the very end.
Other major characters include:
Adam Hauptmann: Mercy's neighbor and Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack. There is romantic tension between the two over the first three books. At the end of the third book, Mercy sleeps with Adam. Except that in the fourth book which begins immediately after the third, they cannot finish because of Mercy's mom showing up. He became a werewolf during the Vietnam War, and now runs a private security firm.
Samuel Cornick: Mercy's roomate, and another werewolf. The son of the Marrok. A doctor, well over 100 years old — possibly over 1000 years old, as he and his father were made into werewolves at the same time, and his father is rumored to be the original for [[Beowolf Grendel. Samuel is a stronger dominant than Adam, which is why he isn't part of Adam's pack. He and Mercy were once in love, when Mercy was a teenager.
Stefan: Probably the least evil vampire around (vampires are always evil), and a friend of Mercy's. Has a van painted like Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine. A major character in Blood Bound.
Siebold "Zee" Adlersmitter: Some sort of German fae who has metalworking magic He's not actually German. Calls himself a gremlin, though he is older than the term. Taught Mercy everything she knows about cars, then sold her his shop. Comes in and runs it for her when she has other business.
Bran Cornick, aka the Marrok: Leader of all the werewolves in North America. Mercy was raised in his pack. Believed to be slightly psychic. Is something of a father figure to Mercy, including scolding her when she does something stupid. Has a seriously dangerous side to him called the Berserker that inspired the Grendel and many other monsters, which he is at pains to keep locked away at all times.
Charles Cornick: Sam's brother and Bran's younger son. Native American, born to a magical mother and thus has inherited some of her abilities. He's the pack enforcer.
Anna Latham: Omega wolf who was deliberately turned by the local pack leader when after his mate went Ax Crazy and killed all the female werewolves, needed someone to calm them down. She was abused for three years in the pack and was told very little, until Charles stepped in. Their inner wolves hit it off and they mated, and Anna moved to Montana.
