A novel by Ted Dekker, Immanuel's Veins is unique in that it combines Christian Fiction with a blatant, no-holds-barred "vampire" theme; with all the sensual seductiveness one expects from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and all the warm, bright, child-like wonder of C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. Set in Romania (where else?) during the height of Catherine the Great's rule as Tsarina of All the Russias, Immanuel's Veins tells the story of two Russian diplomatic agents; on assignment to set up a minor noble family with the future heirs of the Russian Crown. For while the family in question is a relatively minor holding, the important (and plot-conductive) point is that the heirs to this particular region are both "female", making them prime marriage material.Romania is at this point a relatively major battleground, with the might of the growing Russian Empire on one side, and the Ottoman Turks on the other.
