Nornagest: Is this a trope? I haven't seen any statistics (although they probably exist for someone more motivated than I to find), but as far as I can tell, the percentage of couples who have sex before marriage is — conservatively — well over 80. This isn't true in some places outside of the Western world, nor in some Western subcultures, nor in history before the popularization of effective birth control, but those cases are covered by Values Dissonance and Eternal Sexual Freedom respectively.
Silent Hunter: The percentage of couples on TV is basically over 99%.
Nornagest: I kind of doubt that. It definitely wasn't true before the 1980s or so, and even today I'll bet you could find more than a few couples that weren't clearly implied to be sexually active, especially in high-school shows. The example that comes to mind off the top of my head is Dawsons Creek — they may have ended up screwing at some point, but Dawson and Joey remained chaste for the season or so that I watched. There was even a specific we're-not-ready scene.
The majority of TV couples are sexually active, but so are the majority of real-life couples.
Will: Y'know, if we're going to have one this, uh, un-tropey, the least we can do is give it a funny title. Some Sort Of Troper: So trope repair forum discussion leads us to believe that a) the trope needs major work b) work has already been done by a very similar YKTTW which probably still needs futher to go to get a decent trope page and c) what this ends up as, is not going to match up with the name. So this one needs to be cut then the YKTTW can be worked on, launched and draw in Wiki Magic. |
