Dragonball Abridged is a notable Abridged Series of Dragon Ball Z created by Team Four Star and the most popular Abridged Version ofDBZmade (so far).YouTube conducted a sweep of Toei Animation properties in August 2009; this copyright sweep caught TeamFourStar, despite their creation being a parody with an absurdly long disclaimer starting every episode (and despite scores of illegally-uploaded full episodes of the actual series that went untouched). Their account — and their videos — were later restored. At the moment, the group is alive on YouTube (alternate channel, or their official site). For their Let's Play's, go to the main Team Four Star page. For the Alternate Reality DBZ series, click here. This list includes tropes from videos of several Dragonball movies made with most of Team FourStar's cast, but pre-dating TeamFourStar, for convenience's sake.
Krillin (voiced by Lanipator) dresses up as Koenma, and Bulma (voiced by Megami33) attempts to dress up as Sailor Moon. They're the minds behind Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged and Sailor Moon Abridged, respectively.
This is also a reference to the Japanese voice actress, Mayumi Tanaka, who voiced both Krillin and Koenma.
Possibly even a THIRD reference to the fact that the creators of Yu Yu Hakusho and Sailor Moon are married.
In episode 4, Princess Snake is voiced by Lord Quadros. Lord Quadros voices Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid Abridged.
Megami33 also cameos as Sailor Moon at the end of episode 4 to comment on her thoughts about Piccolo blowing up the moon.
One of the fake Namekians in episode 12 off-handedly mentions two guys who "just wanted to play a children's card game", a reference to LittleKuriboh, who by that point had become an official cast member.
More specifically, since the fake Namekians were voiced to sound like the Plutonians from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, it is safe to assume they are referring to two characters from Yu Gi Oh The Abridged Series who were voiced like the Mooninites.
"It is funny because wang means penis!"
Lanipator's brief stint as Freeza is an allusion to voice actress Linda Young. Both Freeza and Yu Yu Hakusho's Genkai are voiced by Young, whom Lanipator's performance is based on.
The character of Guldo is basically Dio from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Abridged. Antfish... does NOT voice him. But he does voice Ginyu.
You might believe that LittleKuriboh's Freeza would be inspired by Chris Ayres' Freeza. But in this case, it's an inversion: Kuriboh's first performance precedes the Dragon Ball Kai dub by months in advance.
Little Kuriboh then makes an allusion to his own role as Yami Yugi. When Freeza changes into his second form, he becomes larger and gets spikier horns. It's only appropriate that he uses his DAN GREEN voice for this form.
Actually Pretty Funny: Subverted. Freeza makes a Double Entendre pun while dishing out a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Nail. Nail begins to chuckle, and Freeza thinks that Actually Pretty Funny is in effect. Then Nail reveals that he's actually laughing because he suckered Freeza into spending an hour flying nowhere special and then beating up a hopelessly outclassed opponent while Dende was heading back to Krillin and Gohan to help them use the dragonballs. Freeza is not amused.
A Date with Rosie Palms: In episode 12, Krillin has to go a month with Bulma walking around in her underwear and no "alone time" because the toilet keeps yelling at him.
Krillin... er... relieves that tension in episode 13.
Bulma: "OH GOD IT'S EVERYWHERE!"
Mentioned by Bulma in Episode 15 ("Well if it isn't Mr. Super Soaker himself") and Episode 17 ("Well I would, if I didn't keep finding puddles of ..." while Krillin interrupts saying, "Yeah, yeah, I know in the cave, get over it.").
In the beginning of Episode 20, Burter, Jeice and Recoome briefly talk about the last time they felt the urge.
Nappa: (looking at Tien getting pissed that Nappa just killed his friends) Oh Vegeta, I think I made him mad. Should I talk to him about it? The first step to solving your problems is healthy communication. (Tien tries to punch him) That was very rude. I was talking to VEGETA! (beats the crap out of Tien)
The Ginyu Force, to varying degrees between members.
And in episode 19, Vegeta's, ahem, ''encounter'' with Bulma...
All There in the Manual: There's a Saiyan handbook. Vegeta always carries around a copy with him to read excerpts from.
He refers Cui to the section on Saiyans growing stronger every time they almost die. After recounting the fact that in his last battle on Earth he got "Destroyed". Cue explosion.
Vegeta throws Jeice the Handbook for him to learn this after he comments on Vegeta's sudden power boost.
Jeice: Let's see, full moon, lose your tail, stronger every time you... oh. Well, I'm right f**ked, aren't I?
While most of the characters are just exaggerated versions of their normal selves, Mr. Popo has been turned into the most terrifying and/or freaking awesome creature in existence.
Kami: Mr. Popo, where did you send them? Mr. Popo: I'll tell you where they're not: safe.
Lord Guru is a senile, bloodthirsty despot. It gets even better with an alternate interpretation of Abridged Guru, after he gives Nail a falseRousing Speech. He knew Nail was going to die. Why not give him some hope of coming out of it alive?
Toolo (that surviving Kanassian Alien from from Bardock: The Father of Goku), who is oblivious to the fact his people are destroyed.
"I CAN SEE THE FUUUUTURE!!!"
Freeza gives us one that explains a little too much: The Namekians are space rednecks.
Guldo trying to be nice to Vegeta in the past is quite the opposite of their encounter in the source material.
On the other hand, you have Vegeta himself, whose canon personality actually requires comparatively little exaggeration to parody.
In the main series, Ginyu cares very little about his men and even plans to replace them with Freeza's mooks before even finding out if they've succeeded in their mission or not. Here, he's undoubtedly loyal to Freeza and while firm with discipline, he and the rest of the force have a mutual respect for each other... except for Guldo.
This isn't quite true. In the original series, Ginyu is pre-occupied with "training" Freeza's mooks up to his impossible standard so he doesn't pay attention to Jeice's report. When the mooks fall flat in their performance though it suddenly hits him that his team is gone, and he flies off in a fury to find Goku.
Anachronic Order: The manner in which the episodes have been added to That Guy With The Glasses. In one of the stranger examples, the first three episodes were released in between episodes 12 and 13.
Angrish: Nappa drives Vegeta into a truckload of this.
During his fight with Vegeta, Goku took Nappa's place.
In Episode 18, Vegeta is driven to a very immense rage. His scream is so loud, even Future Trunks can hear it. He then goes into a minute long incoherent "conversation" with Krillin.
Vegeta: I am here for it... Dragonball... I need that dragonball... Give it to me...One you took... Need my wish... SHUT UP GHOST OF NAPPA! I'M NOT CRAZY! YOU'RE CRAZY! ESPECIALLY YOU, NAPPA! Dragonball. Hand now, please.
Even Freeza succumbs to this when Nail tells him that Dende has the password to the Dragon balls and is already on his way to the humans.
Freeza:[Twitching violently] GNN! GGGGGGNNNNHH!! Nail: Yeah, if I had to guess your biggest mistake, it would be not stopping him. That, or the purple lipstick. Freeza:I WILL F***ING MURDER YOU!! Nail: Whatever. [Freeza flies off in a rage, switching on his scouter] Freeza: Why aren't the Ginyus showing up?! ...Oh, they're dead. [beat] Freeza:WHY ARE THEY DEAD?!
Anti-Humor: The "It's Over 9000" meme is intentionally and noticeably avoided.
The "over 9000" meme is largely subverted, but still existent. Vegeta's scouter reads Goku's power level as 1006, so he tells Nappa to go ahead and fight him. Vegeta is confused as to why Nappa is failing miserably, until he realizes... his scouter is upside down.
At which point the meme is less avoided than overtly mocked; Vegeta says in a dull, uninterested voice, "It's over 9000. Ragh," crushes the scouter, and points out Goku's still not a threat...to him at least.
The joke is used to in the first episode of the Abridged version of Kai with Vegeta shouting the infamous line while Nappa screams.
Freeza: "Tell me. Have you ever heard of planet Vegeta?" Nail: "N-no? Freeza: "Funny. Because that's exactly what I expect the next person will say when I ask them about Namek!"
Arc Fatigue: Actually lampshadedIn-Universe in episode 24, where Krillin randomly is surprised at the fact that they're still on Namek. He also gives the fourth wall a nudge by noting that it feels like it's been a year since they got there which is how long it's taken to do episodes 13-24. (For the curious, the events in those episodes take place over 6 days).
Vegeta: That...reminds me. Did you do anything to me while I was unconscious? Zarbon(affronted): Did— Did I what? Vegeta: Did you do anything to me while I was unconscious? Zarbon: What? No! God, no! Vegeta: Oh, thank God! I j— wait, what do you mean by that? Am I not good enough for you?
Bulma's nightmare about Vegeta seems to be setting this up.
Are You Done Yet?: Bulma and Ginyu do this to rants by Krillin and Vegeta, respectively.
Armour Piercing Question: "How did you know about the parts you weren't there for?" Strong enough to make Freeza stop playing around and transform.
Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Subverted hard in the Christmas Special. When the heroes meet the Quirky Miniboss Squad, each give increasingly horrific accounts of what they've done to get banished from Santa's workforce. When they get to the last guy, the villains says his crime was the worst of all. While usually comedy tropes would dictate his crime would be ridiculously innocuous, the villain then declares he raped Rudolph (along with flashblack audio.)
King Yemma: And not just any mahogany! But mahogany from the planet Malchior 7! Where the trees are 300 feet tall and BREATHE FIRE! From these trees this desk was forged 2000 years ago using ANCIENT BLOOD RITUALS OF THE MALCHIOR PEOPLE! Not only does this make my desk NIGH INDESTRUCTABLE, but it can BEND THE FABRIC OF THE UNIVERSE ITSELF! [beat] ...Also it's a very fine material. Very expensive.
Elder: What do you want from us? Why are you slaughtering our people?
Freeza: Well you see, I was just in the area and I thought this would be a delightful place for a summer home what the *BEEP* do you think I'm here for?
"That's because I was too busy hitting the broad side of Your Mom!"
Atomic F-Bomb: Vegeta's response to hearing Goku had been training at a hundred times normal gravity.
As well as his reaction to getting nailed by the Spirit Bomb.
Two specific instances are noteworthy for being uncensored.
From Episode 10:
Goku:Kaio-Ken... Vegeta:No... Goku:Times... Vegeta:No no noo... Goku:Four! Vegeta:No no no nonononofuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu— (Ten minutes later) —uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!'
And from Episode 24:
Vegeta Oh you Mother FU-(Cut to Krillin, Gohan and Dende)-CKEEEEERRRRRRRS!!!! Piccolo Ow my ears!
Authority Equals Asskicking: A simultaneously humorous and chilling example as Mr. Popo's explains the "pecking order" to the Z-Fighters receiving training: You - The Dirt - The Worms Inside of the Dirt - Popo's Stool (shown as a black box with the word "Censored" stamped across it) - Kami - Popo. A confirmation is even presented after Mr. Popo knocks Krillin off Kami's Lookout (increasing his "Owned Count") after asking a question out of turn, despite asking if anyone had any.
But confirmed even more by Popo refusing to go to Namek to revive Piccolo/Kami. He simply says "pecking order" when Kami protests. Kami stops trying immediately.
Inanimate objects will do what Popo wants. Just because they know it's easier than not doing it.
Ax Crazy: Chi-Chi. Though, when you're dealing with a man whose intelligence is that of a ten year old, it's no wonder why you shouldn't be like that sometimes.
Also Guru apparently. "Kill it like the rest."
Bad Boss: Freeza considers his minions extremely expendable (see We Have Reserves below), and casually kills them off to intimidate his other soldiers and to end awkward conversations.
Dodoria: They're kinda killing our guys... Freeza: Oh, don't worry, we have more of those things back at the ship. It's not like we're losing anything valuable.
In Episode 18, one of them informs him that they were going to start a union against Freeza after informing him that the Ginyu Force would be arriving soon. He didn't have any luck either.
Freeza: You know Zarbon, I'm starting to think my people don't understand what I pay them for. Zarbon: You don't pay us. Freeza: Allow them to live for. Random Soldier: After rising concerns with our personnel...exploding, we've decided to form a union. Freeza: Adorable. (Blows up the soldier)
He even uses them as distraction, proven in a scene where he accidentally mentions to Zarbon he always thought he was gay.
Freeza: ...you know, it really doesn't matter. Zarbon: Well, it matters to me, because, frankly, it sounds like you thought I was... Minion: Lord Freeza! Vegeta's broken out of the healing taaa(explodes) Freeza: Oh no, that minion died, could you go fix that? We'll continue this conversation never.
There's also Super Kami Guru as a relatively benign example. While he's something of a Cloud Cuckoo LanderJerkass, with a tendency to annoy his bodyguard with inane statements and demeaning tasks ("Naaaaail. I saw a bird. Kick its ass."), he willingly gives Krillin and Gohan a dragon ball and their power-ups and warns Team Three Star about the coming Ginyu Force. However, when he tries to send Nail out to fight against the Ginyus, Nail is too fed up with Guru's aforementioned traits to take his orders seriously and just bangs his head against the wall.
He doesn't exactly hand over the Dragon Ball...after Krillin leaves, he issues the command: "Nail. Retrieve the Dragon Ball. And the body."
Guru pushes this trope to the extreme by the end of episode 24.
Super Kami Guru: I feel that they have finally summoned the dragon. It would be a real dick move to die right now. [beat]Hurrh! [Seconds later, the dragon explodes before Vegeta gets his wish.]
Or, in brief:
Nail: Let's just say our world elder's kind of a giant green asshole. Piccolo: Preaching to the choir on that one.
Badass: Somehow, Goku manages to be an even bigger one in the Abridged series than in the main continuity. His fights in the episodes when not facing the big bad last only but a mere minute!( with the exception of Raditz, lasting about 2 or 3 minutes, and he was getting his butt kicked.
Piccolo: "Yeah. That's right. I can take anything you can dish ou-oh God there go my organs."
Vegeta's is a rather unusual case. He manages to make a Badass Boast to Cui about how he got destroyed on Earth. Saiyans grow more powerful after being beaten half to death, you see.
Recoome delivers an absolutely epic one in Episode 20.
Recoome: "Vegeta! You think that just because you're the Prince of all Saiyans, you're the best there is at what you do, but let Recoome tell ya somethin', brother, you ain't no Wolverine, and you ain't got what it takes to step up to a FIVE-TIME CHAMPION! You see, Vegeta, you sit there and brag about how the Saiyans are the mightiest warriors in the universe, how they're the most ruthless, but look where they are now...DEAD! You talk about your legends, your warrior race, and your pride, but that doesn't mean a damn thing to this man! BECAUSE THE NAME'S RECOOME, AND IT RHYMES WITH DOOM, AND YOU'RE GONNA BE HURTIN', ALL TOO SOON!"
Freeza derails a Namekian by keeping a running tally of how many times he's heard a particular Badass Boast. The Namekian tries to utter an original phrase, but Freeza has already heard "We're going to fuck your face!" twelve times.
Subverted again twice in episode 25. Vegeta already knew Freeza could transform (and that Burter was gay). Also, while Freeza doesn't bother with the count (having exterminated the Saiyans before he started keeping track), he is wholly nonchalant about Vegeta's "Super Saiyan" speech and makes fun of it saying "Blah blah blah blah blah, I get it! Then you slayed the Jabberwocky and went on to save Narnia."
Gohan gets one in episode 26 before taking on Form 3 Freeza.
Gohan: Hey Freeza! The human body is composed of 75% water! I am 100% DEATH! HAVE SOME!
Burter: Speed of light and strength of all Recoome: The Ginyu Force shall make them fall! Jeice: We're King Cold’s army’s strongest force Guldo: We’ll beat them all, secure the course! Ginyu: If trouble meets us as we pass Ginyu Force:WE’LL SHOVE OUR FIST RIGHT UP THEIR ASS!
Vegeta: Stupid looking watch you got there (referring to the Dragon Radar) Gohan: Yes. It tells time. And nothing else. Vegeta: Well duh. That's what a watch does. Dumbass.
Bad News, Irrelevant News: Nappa uses this in Bardock: the Father of Goku Abridged to a young Vegeta.
Nappa: "Well, I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is, reports say our entire planet has been destroyed by a gigantic meteorite, along with all its inhabitants." Vegeta: "But, what about..." Nappa: "Aaand your father." Vegeta: "My... Whole... Family... My race!" Nappa: "But the good news is, we're going to DAIRY QUEEN!!" Vegeta: "My entire race is—!" Nappa: [singsong] "DAIRY QUEEN!!" Vegeta: [pause] "Just take me to the damn queen, Nappa."
Bad To The Bone: Alluded to but never implemented in episode 5 when Vegeta tells the Arlian king "I'm about to rock you... like a hurricane" in reference to the projectile Chunky Updraft.
"Ooh, I love that song-AGGHBLEUGH!!"
Beard of Evil: Parodied in the Christmas special, as Goku realizes that Turles was his Evil Counterpart, he noticed that he didn't have one of these. So he imagined one.
"So evil!"
Beat: Excessively used to increase the hilarity in any given scene.
They are such masters of the Beat that they can do it on the fly while doing a let's play.
Antfish: Is there a reason you kept choosing Coach? [beat] Gan: What?
Be Careful What You Wish For: In Episode 5, Nail feels that his current life on Namek is dull and hopes that something exciting happens soon, not caring what it is. Then came Freeza...
During the Christmas Special, Krillin Wished for best Christmas tree from Shenron, and Shenron delivered...
Also, this exchange:
Dende: Piccolo is on Namek.
Gohan: Well, where is he?
Dende: On Namek.
Gohan: Oh, so it's a sort of Monkey's Paw... You have to be careful with the Hubris of your wishes...
Piccolo:(From across Namek) NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD!
Gohan: I...you...healed me. Dende: You are the only one I respect.
Beleaguered Assistant: Nail puts up with a lot from Guru—er, Super Kami Guru. When he finally meets and is threatened by Vegeta, he reacts with barely contained joy.
Nail: Ooh! Ooh! Is this really happening? Because I really hope it is.
And after they find Vegeta's "note" (a piece of paper with "Dear Freeza" and a picture of a butt on it), that he left after stealing the Dragonballs, Freeza shows the first visible sign of anger he's had in the series.
Zarbon: Can I see it, Lord Freeza? Freeza: Vegeta, Dragonballs, NOW!
Do not take Vegeta's Dragon Balls. The results are not good. Ever.
Vegeta's Super Saiyan speech becomes one for Freeza, who gets sick of having to listen to it. So much so that he kills Vegeta midway through his third rendition of it.
Beware the Nice Ones: Gohan. As if it wasn't obvious enough in the actual series.
Beyond the Impossible: This is perhaps the only sufficient way to describe Vegeta's enraged scream after he found out Gohan took one of the Dragon Balls in his possession. It could be heard across time and space. He was so enraged he couldn't even speak Angrish right!
Bigger Bad: While Vegeta was the Big Bad of Seaon 1, Team Four Star made it pretty clear that Freeza was lurking around the corner. And during the Ginyu Saga of Season 2, King Cold's name was thrown around.
One of the outtakes has Vegeta yelling various levels of Big "NO!" in response to Nappa asking "Are We There Yet?" once.
And also during Mr. Popo's training:
Mr. Popo: Good, you survived the first test. Krillin: Oh thank God! Mr. Popo: But I have some bad news. Krillin: What? Mr. Popo: You're going back. Krillin: Wha... What?! Mr. Popo: BYE! Krillin: Nooooooooooo!!!
The Toilet in Kami's Spaceship. It speaks Japanese when Mr. Briefs tried to fix it, but it was set to a "language he didn't know." Later, when Krillin tries to use it twice, the toilet speaks in German.
Dr. Briefs: Damn moonspeak!
The toilet speaks three times in German. It says "I'm filled with pisswater!", "Shit in my face!", and "No!". The last one is briefly heard before being destroyed.
Picolo: "You're not really familiar with our anatomy, are you?"
Blatant Lies: Vegeta does this in episode 21. Goku asks Vegeta what happened to him, and Vegeta says he fell down some stairs. When Krillin attempts to call him out on this Vegeta threatens to throw him down a flight.
Guru does this in episode 22 when he tells Nail he can kick Freeza's ass. As soon as Nail flies away to fight Freeza Guru calls him a fool and says that if he had bothered to train Nail properly he might have stood a chance.
Even Dende pulls one on Krillin
Dende The better question is, why did I tell him he was immortal.
Blofeld Ploy: Freeza does this to Minion 43 when he gets fed up with Zarbon's incompetence.
Freeza: Minion 43 could you come to the bridge? I need an example. Minion 43: An example of what Lord Freeza—(explodes) Freeza: You see that, Zarbon? That's you if Vegeta is not in front of me in the next 10 minutes. Bye.
Bloody Hilarious: Happens in the background by the end of episode 23. When Vegeta actually squishes Ginyu!Frog unlike what happened in the official version.
Brain Bleach: Bulma's reaction when she walks into the cave in episode 13.
OH GOD ITS EVERYWHERE!
Vegeta following the revelation that Dodoria is a woman, and especially after she asks Vegeta to join her as her husband. Vegeta blasts her into oblivion to repress THAT knowledge from his mind.
And in Episode 20, we got Recoome, Burter, and Jeice talking about when the last time they masturbated. Recoome says he hasn't done it in 3 weeks, saying that the pod was too small for him. Burter says "Did it on the way here!" Pretty disturbing image to have in your head ...
Ginyu revealed he did it on the way there as well. The smile he gives is freaky as well.
Freeza: Oh good! I'll stop by [Earth] on the way home. Get some space eggs, some space milk, and BLOW IT THE F**K UP!!!
Another example during episode 20, when Recoome explains the the only things he sells are his merchandise; we see typical Recoome memorabilia (cap, action figure, etc.), and then the last thing that pops up is a Recoome vibrator.
Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Freeza spends the first part of Episode 27 assessing his situation (with all those dead subordinates and all) while effortlessly dodging Vegeta's attacks. When he gets to what to send the Ginyus' families, he considers gift baskets and wine before kicking Vegeta's ki blast back and deciding on gift baskets with wine.
This also functions as a Call Forward, as the meme in question started with MS Paint edits of Cell from two sagas and about a hundred episodes in the future.
Brick Joke/Call Back: Almost every joke that isn't a Running Gag. Noteworthy examples would be the whaaaaaaaales, "What smells like deer", and the narrator's bet with King Kai.
"Kaio-what?"
Ginyu Goku had the same exact thing happen to him in Episode 23 when Goku told him that doesn't know the Kaioken.
Solar Flares are like walking in on Freeza in the shower◊ (despite the fact he's already naked).
But he isn't, really. What do you call the armor and speedo?
In Episode 25, it's Dodoria as a fat woman instead of Freeza, as Freeza is the one who receives the Solar Flare from Krillin.
Krillin: "Wow, you're really sheltered aren't you?" Gohan: "I had to read a whole book on Peach Farming on the way here, you tell me."
Gets a reference back later when Gohan faces off against Recoome.
Gohan: "I may be smaller than you, younger than you, and weaker than you, but I know much more about Peach Farming than y— I think this was a horrible mistake." Recoome: "Recoome agrees..." (asskicking ensues).
In 2009, Team FourStar made "Yamcha the Scarfaced Bandit", a parody of "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer". One year later, guess what the minion Yamcha attempts to fight is playing on his scouter?
In the Bardock father of Goku special Freeza contemplates calling Cooler, but decides against this, citing his reasons as "No he's a prick." Cooler is later seen in his ship and deems not to fire on Goku's pod. His reasons? "Because I'm a prick." This joke carries on into a later episode when Freeza is wondering what he'll do first once he becomes immortal. He eventually decides that he'll "slap Cooler right in his smug, prick face!" And on his Space Twitter profile, the message below his boast about blowing up Vegeta says "@Cooler- You're a prick".
When Krillin and Gohan hide from Freeza and his men in Episode 14, Krillin makes a quacking noise and Dodoria comments on the majestic sound of the space duck. In episode 21, Goku hears Krillin screaming in pain due to his beating from Recoome... and thinks it's a duck.
In episode 25 he tries to fool Freeza into thinking he's a space duck. While right in front of him.
In Episode 16 Guru wants Nail to gather the Dragonballs to wish for a Plasma Screen TV. In Episode 21 he compares Dende's loss of everyone he ever loved to the origin of Batman. When Dende has no idea who that is, "See! This is why we NEED TV!"
From Dead Zone:
Goku: "Don't dodge. It'll hurt him morally!"
After that, in The World Strongest Abridged
Piccolo (Responding to Goku having a plan) "If it's don't dodge, fuck off!"
Then in episode 2:
Piccolo "Can we at least try to dodge this one?"
And from episode 5:
Piccolo "DOOOOOOOOOOODGE!!!!!!!"
After two exclamations of "No! My space <NOUN>!" from Raditz, Piccolo exclaims, "We get it, you're from space!" Much later, after Jeice finishes a sentence chock full of Australian slang Krillin shouts, "We get it, you're from Space Australia!"
Or Space New Zealand.
"I've got a Dragon Ball"
Krillin's impending castration.
In Episode 11, when Krillin sees Gohan's new hairstyle, he likens Gohan to Moe Howard. Then, in Episode 18, Vegeta says the same thing when he meets Gohan mid-flight.
Jeice keeps on getting punched repeatedly in the face by Goku in Episode 21. Jeice says "What would the captain do?" and it shows Ginyu saying "Jeice, whenever you are being repeatedly in the face, always remember to -", getting cut off by one of Goku's punches. In Episode 22, Jeice gets punched again and Ginyu says "Jeice, what did I tell you?"
Goku: Aren't you going to dodge any of these? Jeice: Ohhhhh, THAT'S what the cap'n*punch* AHH! BURTER! SUPPORT!!
In Episode 23, Bulma yelled at Gohan and Krillin by saying that she fought a giant crab and killed one.
The Saiyan Handbook. Jeice knew his death was inevitable after reading it. Cui didn't.
Episode 24 has so many.
Piccolo calling Gohan a nerd
We found out what happened to the Albino Namekians.
George Takei strikes again!
Vegeta's "scream" occurs. Piccolo yells out "Ow! My ear!"
This dialogue returns from Episode 18, but with different results.
Vegeta: (All but screaming in rage) So what are you doing? Gohan: (Scared) What am I doing? Vegeta: What are you doing? Gohan: (Scared) Nothing much. Vegeta: Thwarting my plans?! Gohan: (Scared) Thwarting your plans? Vegeta: ARE YOU?! Gohan: (Beat, then calmly)Yes. Vegeta: (Beat) I'M GOING TO F**KING KILL YOU!
Compared to Episode 18.
Gohan: No. Vegeta: Good. Because that would be bad. Gohan: How bad? Vegeta: I'd have to kill you. Gohan: That's bad. Vegeta: Indeed.
Bulma's panties.
During Vegeta's screaming Gohan asks Krillin if he heard that, and Krillin responds that he felt that. Later when Freeza is powering up, Gohan asks Krillin if he feels that. Krillin says he tastes that.
In Episode 25, Piccolo mentions something about Nail adding him on Myspace. This goes back to the contents of Episode 1.
Lord Slug Abridged mentions Freeza Day, the misfit minions, and Goku saving Christmas from the Tree of Might special. When Slug goes giant he crushes Goku and laughs when Goku squeaks, just like when Vegata did the same as a giant gorrila.
Freeza: So Vegeta, where are you going? Vegeta: Oh, you know... places. Freeza: Places, hmmm? Like that mountain over there? Vegeta: Actually, that looks more like a plat-[punch]-EEEEEEAAAAAAUUUUU!!!
Episode 18:
Gohan: You hear that, Krillin? Krillin: I FEEL that. Episode 25: Gohan: Krillin do you feel that?! Krillin: I TASTE THAT!
In Episode 14, Freeza has a routine of keeping track of the various kinds of Badass Boasts he's heard, and even the most esoteric and vulgar one the Namekians can come up with, he's heard twelve times. Come Episode 27, Goku arrives and immediately gives one that's new to him.
Vegeta's Legendary Super Saiyan Rant;
Freeza: I feel like we've been here before, have we been here before?
During the credits to the Christmas Tree of Might it gets mentioned that one of Piccolo's gifts was a bigger part in the next movie. Sure enough, his role in Lord Slug was key to the good guys winning and probably the most memorable thing about that movie.
Vegeta:Dragonball! Hand now, please! Krillin:[Terrified] Um... I don't... really... have it. Vegeta:No. Krillin: What? Vegeta:No. Krillin: Uh... Vegeta:Nooo.
Brother Chuck: Lampshaded in Episode 10 when Bulma and the other characters are reminiscing about the times they were useful to the series.
Bulma: Whatever happened to Launch? Roshi: Who? [cut to a bar, where a drunken Launch is face down on the counter, sighing despondently]
Bumbling Sidekick: Nappa was essentially this to Vegeta, with hilarious results.
And as of episode 25, apparently to King Vegeta too. And either gives terribly bad advice, or is a Treacherous Advisor.
Krillin (by everyone) to the point of having a special counter whenever he is disrespected (usually someone beats him up, but in episode two, Krillin got owned when Master Roshi told him to shut up and in a season two episode, Krillin owned himself after screwing up a witty one-liner).
Up to and including getting owned ten times on a row.
Owns himself AGAIN by trying to imitate Piccolo's neck snap.
Raditz (by his teammates) with the constant references to how weak he was. No respect for the dead.
It's been stated that Krillin is only a Butt Monkey because Yamcha isn't around.
Yamcha is also a Butt Monkey, it's just not as lampshaded as Krillin. Most notably was when he was blown up by a Saibaman when trying to answer a question in FAQ Special #2
Also in FAQ #2, Tien says specifically that Krillin is the "official" butt monkey because Yamcha isn't around enough.
Yamcha's almost a reverse Butt Monkey, as the characters seem to go out of their way to talk about how awesome he is, only for him to die immediately. Subverted after his death as out of all the warriors training with King Kai during the Namek saga, he's treated the worst.
Vegeta seems to be suffering a good deal of psychological trauma as well, especially in season 2.
Guldo to Vegeta, who treats him like a dog, and even to the rest of the Ginyu Force. When trying to cheer up Burter, Jeice mentions the time Burter helped him move a couch, with the explanation that "Recoome was busy, and Guldo...well, he was Guldo."
Also when Jeice tried listing people who were faster than Burter, to get him to stop bragging about his speed. Burter accepted Ginyu, as their captain, being stronger/faster, and to an extension their boss Freeza as well (grudgingly though, as he felt it wasn't fair) but GULDO being faster than him because of his time ability? Not so much.
Not to mention Ginyu made a BET with Burter that Guldo would die (or somewhere along those lines).
May already have become the Caligula, what with Dende saying his reign was terrifying.
Call Back: Piccolo mentions that we switched from Myspace to "Space Book" in episode 25
In Episode 26 he mentions how he just assumed he could connect to the internet with his antennas when Nail mentions he has apps.
In Episode 3, Piccolo tells Gohan that he's going to throw him at a mountain in order to draw out his hidden power. It doesn't work. Gohan corrects him, saying that it looks more like a plateau. The scene is repeated in Episode 26 between Freeza and Vegeta.
In the Lord Slug special the minions think Christmas is the Earth name for Freeza Day, mentioned in the (Christmas) Tree of Might special.
The Stinger to Episode 27 is a call back to a line from Episode 5. Vegeta even lampshades it:
Huh. Should've known that was a one-hit wonder.
Calling the Old Man Out: Gohan uses Goku and Ginyu's body swap as an opportunity to let out some much needed aggression:
Gohan: Abandon me for a year with Piccolo... Send me off into space... And the next time I get to see you, you lost your damn body!? YOU'RE NOT EVEN YOU ANYMORE!
And mind you, none of that was actually Goku's fault. He was kinda dead when Gohan was with Piccolo, he wanted to go into space himself... we can't imagine what it'll be like in the Cell saga where Goku originally starts acting like a Jerkass Mentor.
Calling Your Attacks: Subverted when Goku takes a bit too long with this to throw the Spirit Bomb and gets blasted by Vegeta.
Goku: "FULL NELSON!" Raditz:(incredulously) "A full nelson? That won't work on me. I'm Raditz!"
And Raditz was recast due to an argument over attack names ("Double Sunday" or "Keep Your Eye on the Birdie") mid-attack.
Finally, Piccolo tries to call the name of his five-minute beam attack during the battle with Raditz, after struggling to use the Japanese name he just goes with the English name Special Beam Cannon.
Piccolo: Mankansap...Mankankakasap...Mekasapp..ahh, the hell with it! SPECIAL BEAM CANNON!!!"
Piccolo just gives up and spouts a bunch of random syllables for DBZ Abridged Kai.
Piccolo: "Mankansapalapaka!"
Parodied in Abridged Dead Zone when Garlic Jr.'s minions have names for actions/attack patterns that didn't have any in the original, such as: "Wheel of Bitchslaps" for when they attacked Goku in a circle and "Gentle Statue Push" when Goku gets sent flying into a statue.
Nappa: Hey, Vegeta. Vegeta: What is it? Nappa: We're in prison, Vegeta. Vegeta: I see that, Nappa. Nappa: Hey. Vegeta: What? Nappa: Don't drop the soap. Vegeta: I swear to God, Nappa, I will shiv you.
Nappa: "Vegeta... I can fly!"
Also, the repeated:
Gohan (exposition of something terrible that just happened) Krillin "YES GOHAN! I NOTICED!"
Lanipator's voicework is a deadringer for Chris Sabat'sPiccolo, Vegeta, Shenron, and his early work for Popo; Linda Young's Freeza (albiet briefly); and Justin Cook's Raditz (until the recast).
Seriously, if not for the profanity, you wouldn't know that Sabat isn't voicing Vegeta.
Also, Nappa becomes FAR too insanely stupid to live, Piccolo becomes a lonely and sarcasticJerk Ass, Krillin's Butt Monkey status has increased to crazy levels (right down to having a counter for the many times he's been "owned") and Vegeta becomes pretty much the sanest character (when he's calm), and he's the bad guy (for now).
Chew Bubblegum: Piccolo screwed this one up several times throughout Dead Zone.
More serious example is Krillin, who is actually on The Chew Toy image.
Also Gohan - just like the source material and, as usual, exaggerated even more. The series delights in pointing out how pretty much everything that he gets put through is pretty damn horrible for anyone to go through, let alone a five or six year old kid. To deal with it he mixes shades of a Pollyanna with shades of a Deadpan Snarker. In episode 24 he even sits down and mulls over how screwed up his life has been.
Chirping Crickets: Both times when Gohan was kidnapped ("Quick, somebody stop him!") and after Yamcha adds that he and Tenshinhan/Tien should rescue Krillin during their training in the time city.
[Gohan disappears from Nappa's sight as he tries to stomp him] Nappa: "Huh! Where'd he go? Did he disappear? Or was he never there to begin with? [Dramatic music plays]
And Guru.
Guru: "You must now refer to me as Super Kami. No wait... Super Kami Guru."
King Yemma is sometimes no better, with his obsession with his desk, and more specifically the material it's made out of: mahogany. But not just ANY Mahogany. Mahogany from the planet of Melchior SEVEN, where the trees are 300 feet tall and breathe FIRE!
Cluster F-Bomb: Subverted. Vegeta goes into a long rant, most of which can't be heard over the beeps of Jeice's scouter. During The Stinger of that episode, the rant is heard without the beeps, but it turns out to be a Minor Insult Meltdown or string of Unusual Euphemisms instead.
Vegeta: "Son of a gum-chewing funk monster! Why the fruit does all this funny stuff happen to me?! Forget my life! Always surrounded by miserable failing clods! Like this whole world just likes to bend me over and findme in the Alps! Like I'm some sort of schlock receptacle! Well as far as I care, these miserable cows can have a fancy barbeque, with a Goddamn pig!"
Vegeta You know, I'm surprised you're here Ginyu; I though you'd be busy polishing Freeza's boots?
Ginyu First off, Lord Freeza doesn't wear boots. Second, if he did, I'd have already polished them.
And then there was this exchange between Goku and Frieza
Frieza Unfortunately, Vegeta and I were having ourselves a disagreement. He wanted himself to live, and well...I didn't.
Goku Why do you want to die?
Frieza Wha-? No! I-I-I meant-I meant I want him to di-
Goku Is it 'cause you look weird?
Content Warnings: The outtakes, parodied. "If you're under the age of 18 and have not heard the word "fuck" before... well, ya have now."
Krillin: "Warning! The following contains strong language not suitable for minors. If you're under the age of 18, then you-"*CRASH* "OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!"
Couch Gag: From Episode 17 onward, the "please support official release" message is always done by the character who dies in that episode. (Or, in Episode 25's case, the character who ceases to exist as an individual being in that episode.)
Dende: Mr. Gohan, what are those things on that person's chest? Gohan: Who, on Bulma? They're called breasts. Dende: They look lovely. I wish to nestle between them. Krillin: [beat] You are just adorable!
Bulma(after seeing Zarbon): Oh my God, he's so hot! I just wanna grab him and— Goku(doing upside down crunches): ...sixty-nine, seventy, seventy— Vegeta(confronting Zarbon): One time, you've defeated me Zarbon, and that's one time too many.
Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Nail informs Piccolo that he knows a dangerous technique, forbidden to ever be used. They then abuse it, maliciously.
Darker and Edgier: Season 2 compared to Season 1, owing to the source material.
[Goku, lying on the ground after being trounced by Vegeta, blasts the giant ape in the eye] Goku: Hah! Now, to make my cunning escape! [Goku suddenly gets up and acrobatically dodges Vegeta, leaping from rock to rock] [Cut back to Goku, still lying on the ground] Goku: Aw, that would be awesome...
(Vegeta hits the ground, large explosion. Later, he crawls out.) Vegeta (gasping): Why did I explode?
Delegation Relay: Freeza tells Zarbon to give the command. Zarbon tells Dodoria to give the command. Dodoria gives the command to nameless mooks. Nameless mooks follow said command and die like flies as the above three stand around looking bored.
Goku has this in spades. Anytime anything with reference to any food is mentioned around Goku, he plays this trope straight. He does it when his ribs are being crushed by his brother...
Raditz:(stomps on Goku’s ribs) STOP IGNORING ME! Goku: AH! MY RIBS! I THINK YOU BROKE MY- Mmmm… Ribs…
...and twice while fighting Vegeta, enough to get the latter enraged enough to destroy Earth...
(Vegeta gets punched through a rock and into the side of a plateau) Vegeta: This… proves… nothing. Goku: Are you okay in there? Vegeta: Yeah. I’m fan-f**king-tastic. Nothing but gumdrops and ice cream in here. Goku: Ooh, really!? Can I come in too? Vegeta: I’m surrounded by idiots. Goku: I thought you were surrounded by gumdrops and ice cream. Vegeta: AH! (the top of the plateau breaks away) I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS! I WILL NOT BE HUMILIATED BY A LOW-CLASS WRETCH! Goku: Aww… Sounds like somebody’s got an ice cream headache. Vegeta: That’s it! Everyone dies! (flies in the air and charges his ki) Say goodbye to your planet Kakarot! Goku: Well, that’s not very nice. Vegeta: OF COURSE NOT! I’M F**KING EVIL! (charges his ki into his hands) Galick Gun… Goku: Ooh. Did he say “garlic”- Oh man. (powers up) Ka-me-ha-me… Vegeta: FIRE! (fires a Ki blast)
In episode 4, during the Shout Out to Pac-Man, Goku stops in the maze to eat a steak just laying there, while being chased by Princess Snake's head...
Description Cut: When Goku wonders where Bulma is in episode 22, Krillin assumes she's doing "something girly". Cut to her fighting a Giant Enemy Crab underwater in a Mini Mecha.
In episode 15:
Zarbon: "How do you think Dodoria is doing out there?" Freeza: "We are talking about one of my finest soldiers, there is no way that they'll escape Dodoria's grasp." (Krillin head-butts Dodoria in the face and escapes.) Dodoria: "Ah, Dammit!" Zarbon: "But what if they have any tricks in their sleeves?" Freeza: "Come now Zarbon! We know Dodoria wouldn't let them out of sight!" (Krillin blinds Dodoria with a solar-flare, which includes a shot of Freeza in the shower.) Dodoria: "Ah, DAMMIT!!" Zarbon: "Still, sir, we have to remember that Vegeta is on the planet." Freeza: "Oh Please! Like Vegeta could even lay a hand on Dodoria." (Vegeta smacks Dodoria downwards.) Dodoria: "AH, DAMMIIIIIT!!!" (splash)
Die or Fly: Completely Averted As when Gohan is thrown towards the cliff, he flies face first into it, complete with whining.
Disappeared Dad: As the series has progressed, Gohan is displaying increasing anger and disgust with his generally ineffective and absent father.
Gohan: What would dad do? Flashback Goku: "Bye, son!" Gohan: I'm beginning to think I have issues.
What's really bad is that, at this point, Goku's absences aren't even his own fault. Just wait until the Android saga is finished...
So far, Goku hasn't even been shown to care about Gohan, only saying "Hey" to him when he arrives to fight Freeza. It doesn't help that he hasn't even said that he loves Gohan.
Gohan: Dad? Dad! Oh my God, you're here! I love you dad!
Disproportionate Retribution: "Hello, and welcome to the Heavenly Check-In Station. Please no cutting in line. If you are caught cutting in line, you will be sent straight to hell." Of course, cutting in line in front of the gate of heaven before your soul is judged really isn't a very smart move.
This exchange from episode 25:
Dende: (To Freeza) They're from Earth. Krillin: Little Green, why?? Dende: Because my name is Dende.
Distant Reaction Shot: In episode 18, when Vegeta discovers that Gohan swiped his stashed Dragon Ball, we get a string of these showing that Vegeta's yell is audible from the Z-warrior's hideout, Freeza's base, Goku's spaceship (still in space), Yemma's house in the afterlife, and Earth 20 years in the future.
Piccolo: DAMN YOU, PAVLOV! Reporter: For those of you who don't know who Pavlov is, allow us to take a brief moment to explain. Back in 1904... Oolong: [hitting the TV] Get back to the fight! Reporter: ...and back to the fight!
Played straight a couple episodes later:
Vegeta: Now it's time to reveal my giant monkey... [camera over his crotch] Crowd: [collective gasp] Vegeta: ...form. [camera pans to his face] Crowd: [sighs of relief] Man in Crowd: Thank God, I thought he meant penis!
Happens repeatedly in the Bardock special with Freeza for Zarbon:
Freeza: (Before Dodoria goes after Bardock's ship) Oh, forget about it. He's already on a direct course for Planet S.O.L. Zarbon: Planet what? Freeza: Uhh... Planet—(scene change) Bardock: Vegeta!
A whole slew of these were thrown in episode 24 when Goku was explaining his situation to King Kai after he landed on Namek.
Goku: Well, when I got down here, I ran into some really weird guys. One was really big and muscly, but he went down really easy. Then these two guys double-teamed me. One of them took it really hard in the back, but the other didn't seem that interested, so he went and brought this really horny guy. George Takei: Oh my... Goku: Who's that, King Kai? King Kai: It's George Takei. Somehow we made this into a three-way... George Takei: OH MY... King Kai:...Call! Three-way call!
Lord Slug drops one of these as well.
"This is amazing! I feel like a young, strapping lad, beating his meat furiously for the first time!"
And then in episode 15, we get an inversion from Dodoria.
Tropes E-F
Early-Bird Cameo: Vegeta and Nappa in episode 1. Guru and Nail in episode 5. Trunks in episode 18. Cooler and an infant Broly in Bardock Abridged.
The mentions of Bojack are a partial example since we're told he's there and we hear his voice a couple times, but we won't see him until they abridge his movie (if they do so).
Early Installment Weirdness: Generally averted, but in the Dead Zone abridged movie (made before the official formation of Team FourStar), Gohan was portrayed as mentally handicapped ("I know how many fingers fish have!"). In the regular series, he's probably the most intelligent character of the bunch.
In the pre-TFS abridged movies, most notably The World's Strongest, Goku was portrayed with as a Trickster, being able to outwit his opponents. He was also portrayed as mean-spirited, especially towards Krillin, and swore often. These traits carried over into the first two DBZ Abridged episodes, after which Abridged Goku became the food-obsessedIdiot Hero that is Too Dumb to Live, but we all know now.
Eccentric Mentor: Guru. "I'm about to misuse my hand upside your head!"
Vegeta: GAH! MY eye! Why is it always the goddamn eye!?
Made into somewhat of a Brick Joke in episode 18. When Vegeta pops a blood vessel in his eye, it pops in his right eye. The same eye that was both elbowed by Gohan and blasted by Goku in the aforementioned episode.
Again in Lord Slug Abriged when Gohan defeats a mook by shattering the glass visor of his helmet.
Mook: OH GOD ALL I CAN SEE IS GLASS AND BLOOD!
Fake Static: Goku somehow manages to trick King Kai into thinking he hung up... during a telepathic conversation. This is immediately lampshaded by King Kai himself:
King Kai: He hung up on me! How did he even do that?!
Fantastic Racism: Complete with Fantastic Genocide. The Namekkians keep referring to a race of Albino Namekkians that were "purged" and that they all view as hideous.
Feel No Pain: Krillin receives a kick from Recoome that throws his nervous system out of whack and leaves him unable to feel the pain from the kick...for a few seconds.
Female Alien Surprise: The most accurate description we've got for Dodoria being female.
Vegeta: All I have to do now is stay under the radar and not fly around like a jackass saying... Krillin: I've got a dragonball! Vegeta: I was going to say, "come and get me Freeza", but that works too.
Flame War: For quite a popular series, these are prevalent in the forums and on Youtube. Also mentioned in the FAQ Specials.
In the TFS FAQ Special, Vegeta says that somebody who asks who to voice for will be flamed. Along with that, in the 2nd TFS FAQ Special, Chiaotzu insults people who want to audition, saying that "they have no talent" and that "they suck".
NEVER... EVER... EVER... speculate about a future appearance of Ghost Nappa.
There are also debates of how Guru is either a great and hilarious character or a horrible and predictable character.
Nappa himself. Some people just plain hated him.
Surprisingly, Popo hasn't received any negative criticism... yet.
In episode 24, after Freeza delivers an Offhand Backhand to Nail:
Freeza: I've had a worse time, you know. It's not often I dirty my hands with this sort of grunt work. There's always a certain amount of satisfaction I get out of doing it myself. [Freeza begins laughing - and after a few seconds so does Nail] Freeza: Ah... it is kind of funny, isn't it? Nail:[still laughing] I'm laughing at something else, actually. Freeza:[still laughing] What? Nail:[still laughing] The Earthlings have the password. [Beat] Freeza: What.
And this exchange:
Zarbon: Too bad... and that Bardock was such a dashing rogue... [Beat] Dodoria: ...What.
Foreshadowing: During the Namek saga, anyone who recites the opening disclaimer will die in one to two episodes (Except Vegeta, who recited two separate disclaimers before dying. Because he's that awesome.)
There's also Popo at the start of that same saga.
Mr. Popo: "See you all when you get back! Except... this season... (looks to Krillin) you..."
Spoofed in episode 7, after Nappa forgot why he and Vegeta came to Earth, Vegeta says, "One of these days you're going to die. Then you'll be out of my hair forever." This is followed by the caption Epic Foreshadowing.
Forgotten Phlebotinum: Gohan wonders why Krillin never follows up his Solar Flare (which blinds and incapacitates stronger enemies for a while) with his Destructo Disk (which is slow but can cut even much stronger opponents).
In Episode 7, when Piccolo says that the Saiyans are seeking to find the one with the strongest power level. After Gohan claims that Piccolo is the strongest, someone else is seen laughing in the background standing on top of a mountain. Can you find it? (It's at 1:57)
Freudian Excuse: Turles hates Christmas because Santa Claus never visited Planet Vegeta, and they only got Freeza's Day (when he blew up the planet). It's actually revealed that Santa tried to visit the planet several times, but they always tried to blow up his sled.
Freudian Slippery Slope: When Goku telepathicly reports on his fight with the Ginyu force to King Kai:
Goku: I ran into these really weird guys. The first one was big and muscly, but he went down real easy. Then these two guys double-teamed me. One of them took it really hard in the back, but the other didn't seem that interested, so he brought this really horny guy. George Takei:Oh my! Goku: Who's that, King Kai? King Kai: That's George Takei. Somehow he made this into a three-way. George Takei: Oh my! King Kai:Call! Three-way-call!
In Lorg Slug Abridged, Piccolo is busy beating up some mooks when the Quirky Miniboss Squad make their entrance:
Piccolo: "All right, what's your gimmick?" Dorodabo: "Gimmick?" Piccolo: "Yeah, like the last guys, they were all misfit minions and crap. What are you?" Angira: "We're just here for your planet... though if I had to choose, I'd say I'm the pretty one." Piccolo: "Eh, six out of ten." Angira: "You sassy bitch." Piccolo, to Medamatcha: "That makes you the weird one with the freaky power..." Medamatcha: "I CAN SPAWN MINI-MES!" Piccolo: "Spectacular. (turns to Dorodabo) And that would make you, no doubt, the big, tough, stupid one." Dorodabo: "You take that back or I'll kill you!" Piccolo: "All right, all right, you're not tough." Dorodabo: "That's better!" Gohan: "Wait, didn't you...?" Piccolo: "Give him a minute." Dorodabo: "...Hey!"
Bulma: "I FOUGHT A GIANT CRAB!" Krillin: "...They make a special shampoo for that, I hear—OW!"
Gift of the Magi Plot: "Christmas Tree of Might" has Yamcha receive a lifetime supply of gasoline at the end, after the car he spent his life savings on was destroyed.
Gilligan Cut: At the start of episode twenty-seven, Goku reflects that he's sure everybody is just fine. Cut to:
Vegeta: "Healer's down!"
Krillin: "Need a rez!"
Gohan: "Out of mana!"
Vegeta starts screaming and they all follow suit.
Giving Up On Logic: In Christmas Tree of Might, Goku starts trying to talk to the titular tree to get it to leave Earth. Yamcha tries to explain that trees can't talk only to be cut off by Slay's voice which appears to answer for the tree since Slay is offscreen. Yamcha gives up in exasperation. The whole exchange is the page quote.
"Son of a gum-chewing funk moster! Why the fruit does all this funny stuff happen to me? For-get my life! Always surrounded by miserable failing clods. Like this whole world just likes to bend me over, AND FIND ME IN THE ALPS! Like I'm some sort of schlock receptacle. Well, as far as I care, these miserable cows can have a fancy barbecue, WITH A GODDAMNED PIG!!"
Goku also delivers one of these as a Pre-Mortem One-Liner in Christmas Tree of Might and Lord Slug Abridged, the latter's line referencing this this trope's use in the official dub.
Gratuitous Japanese: The title of episode 19, plus the Ginyu Force theme. It's meant as a parody of the sentai shows that inspired the Ginyu Force, though the episode title itself comes off as a bit wonky if you speak Japanese.*
It's given as "到着を恐怖!! ギニュー特戦隊は、敬礼!!" ("Fear the arrival!! As for the Ginyu Force, [they] salute!!"), when what's probably meant is "恐怖の到着!ギニュー特戦隊、敬礼!" ("Dreaded arrival! Ginyu Force, salute!")
In episode 25:
Freeza: (after killing King Vegeta, without the usual exuberance associated with the phrase) "Yatta." (meaning, "I did it.")
Grissom One-Liner: Parodied. Krillin sets one up after he and Gohan take out a pair of Freeza's soldiers, but all it does is give him his first Owned Count point of the season.
Vegeta tries one in episode 8 after Nappa's attack on Tien.
Vegeta: Looks like he's been... disarmed! [beat; gust of wind] Nappa: I get it!
Happy Dance: In addition to Dragon Ball Z's Dance of Joy (which he is contractually obligated to perform by King Cold), Ginyu also does the "Daddy's Little Princess Dance" (commanded by Cooler) the "Dance of Cheering You Up", and the "Dance of Solitude".
Head Desk: Done in episode 21 when Nail, tired of Guru's orders, goes outside for twenty minutes and does this.
Heroic RROD: After his rage-induced scream in Episode 18, when Vegeta is next seen his eyes are bloodshot and he is driven insane, talking in Hulk Speak and hallucinating Ghost Nappa. He later proceeds to pop the blood vessels in his eyes right as he is about to utterly erase Krillin from existence, but he instantly recovers upon sensing Gohan's power level and has no recollection of what just happened.
His eyes bleeding looks similar to his nosebleed in Episode 9.
Tenshinhan: Chiaotzu! My partner! Yamcha: Gay. Tenshinhan: Hey! At least I don't spend all my free time living alone with a cat! Yamcha: Hey! At least I get some puss— ...wow, that did not come out right.
Though it depends on which one you watch, since with how popular abridging has become, there are bound to be a few different groups abridging the same thing
Seeing that LittleKuriboh voices Freeza ... at the end of Episode 24, he says "... give me some ideas." He sounds a lot like Florence (a.k.a. Yami Bakura). Interestingly enough, one of his quotes is said earlier in that same episode by Krilin. When he transforms, he sound a lot like Yami Yugi, especially when he says "All done."
From the Bardock: Father of Goku special and onwards, many of the sound effects come from the Orange Box. In particular, all grunts and yells of mooks during combat are clearly those of the characters from Team Fortress 2. May also count as a Shout Out.
Hiroshima As a Unit of Measure: Vegeta and Nappa measure themselves and the heroes' power levels in 'Raditz'(who had a power level of 1200).
Ginyu had a standing bet with Burter over whether or not Guldo would die, with the wager being "50 Raditz". It Makes Just as Much Sense in Context.
Presumably, he was betting 60000 of something. Of what, of course, we don't actually know.Space Dollars, maybe?
The ad for "Spacey's" promotes the chain's Raditz Menu, made up of items that cost only a Raditz. Whatever it means as a currency, it's evidently not very much. Oh, Raditz.
Vegeta: Don't you understand? If I didn't get my wish, then I'm not immortal, and Freeza is going to... going to... (stammers upon seeing Freeza) Freeza: Oh don't mind me, by all means...Give me some ideas.
Hulk Speak: An enraged Gohan starts speaking this while beating on Freeza for stabbing Krillin.
Humiliation Conga: Vegeta. After having his tail cut off, being blasted by a Spirit Bomb, getting crushed by a naked child, and almost killed by Krillin of all people, he escapes to his pod, only to be greeted by... [[GHOST NAPPA!]]
Hypocritical Humor: Guru calls Kami a pretentious prick for calling himself God *
"Kami" in Japanese is translated to "God"
. Immediately after that, Guru tells nail to call him Super Kami Guru.
"Can't I just call you Guru for short?" "Super Kami Guru allows this."
Tien (after he is revealed to be Jewish): I'm just trying to culturally sensitive... you Buddhist ass! Krillin (a little offended): Well, happy holidays to you, too.
Vegeta displayed this when attacked for the second time by Yajirobe.
Vegeta: You... you cut through my armor! This was a gift from my father! Yajirobe: I'm sorry, I'm sure your father was a great man. Vegeta: I hated my father! Yajirobe: Oh, well then I'm sure he was a total prick. Vegeta: [attacks Yajirobe]' How dare you talk about my father like that!
Nappa: Vegeta! Look! A Pokémon. Chaotzu: I'm not a Pokémon, I'm Chaotzu! Chaotzu! Nappa: Hear that, Vegeta? It's a Chaotzu! (generates PokéBall from his hand) I'm gonna catch it! Chaotzu: I told you, I'm not a- (Throws PokéBall at Chaotzu) Chaotzu: Ow! Nappa: Aww! It didn't work, Vegeta! Vegeta: That's because you have to damage it first. Nappa: Alright! I'll see if I can get a critical.
Yajirobe: You gonna eat that Saiyan? Krillin: What? Yajirobe: Dibs.
And in the second blooper special, along with trying to eat Tien's arm:
Krillin: Yajirobe, what were you doing here to begin with, anyways? Yajirobe: Well, I thought I smelled something cooking, but then it just turned out to be Yamcha's body. Krillin: ...Wait, you didn- Yajirobe: Almost.
One of Bardock's teammates asks an unconscious Bardock for permission to eat a dead alien.
Vegeta: *Upon sensing Gohan's power level on Namek* Hey! Show yourself before I turn this place into a barren wasteland. So basically the same, only on fire.
Krillin:(after knocking two mooks into a lake) Looks like they're all... washed up! Gohan stares at him blankly Krillin:Yeah! Da-da-da-da, da-da ... Aww.
From Episode 27:
Freeza: But before we part ways, Vegeta, let me tell you a tale. *whacks with tail* The end.
Inelegant Blubbering: Vegeta finally snaps in Episode 27 when he completely fails to do anything to Freeza.
Freeza: See? It's like I told you, Vegeta - like a bitch.
Vegeta:[voice cracking] SHUTTUP!
Freeza: Oh my god, You actually are crying!
Vegeta:[hoarsely] 'M NOT CRYING! 'M NOOOT!
Infallible Narrator: Lampshaded when the narrator tries to get in on King Kai's betting pool over Vegeta and Goku's battle.
King Kai: Don't you already know the outcome of the fight? Narrator: ...No...
Informed Ability: Jeice eventually calls out Burter on his claim of being "the fastest in the universe." Especially since Guldo can stop time.
Inner Monologue: Freeza has a Casual Danger Inner one in episode 27. It starts with him hating how many of his men had died on this mission and ending with him thinking on what to send to the Ginyu force families such as a nice wine, a gift basket, or maybe a gift basket with wine in it.
Freeza: Zarbon really screwed the pooch on this one! Zarbon: Lord Freeza, Vegeta's really giving us a pounding! Freeza: I'm coming Zarbon! Quick, grab my balls! Ginyu Force:(laughter)
Krillin and especially Super Kami Guru to Gohan. Since Guru's happened after the Acceptable Targets quote above, it's not clear exactly how innocent it is.
Guru is to be addressed as Super Kami Guru... except by Nail, who is allowed to call him Guru for short.
Ironic Echo: Piccolo telling Gohan to "Dooodge!", as mentioned above
"I'm back." *BAM*
"Ooooh, I see what you did there..."
And this exchange:
Freeza: "So, did you eliminate everyone on the planet? Dodoria: "Complete Annihilation." Zarbon: "...Where are all your men?" Dodoria: "Complete Annihilation." Zarbon: (later, as Bardock's pod surpasses Freeza's ship) "So, "Complete Annihilation", huh?" ** In the same special, Freeza debates having supper with his brother Cooler, but decide against it because he's a prick. At the end of the special, Goku's pod is detected by Cooler's ship. He orders his men not to fire on it. When asked why he replies "Because I'm a prick."
Ghost Nappa: *tap tap* "Is this thing on? Is it on? Okay there we go! *clears his throat* YOU ARE NOW THINKING ABOUT WHAT ZARBON DID TO YOU, WHILE YOU WERE UNCONSCIOUS. Have fun with that."
It's Pronounced "kah-ee-oh": King Kai berates Yamcha for saying "Kaiou Ken" with the original (as in no longer used) US pronounciation of "kay-oh."
It Was His Sled: In-universe example - Vegeta already knew that Freeza blew up his home planet. Freeza really needs to stay off the (Space)Twitter.
Justified in the Running Gag that Shenron is really tired with people asking for simple wishes, primarily by the heroes again and again and again.
Jerk Ass: Piccolo. One example includes deliberately telling Gohan to let Tien fight Nappa alone to avenge Chaotzu, despite Tien's constant desperate pleas for help.
Another example:
Gohan: Where's my daddy? Piccolo: I hate to tell you kid but your dad's dead. Actually, no, I love saying that. HAHAHA your dad's dead! Gohan: (cries) Piccolo: Aw, dammit. This is why I hang out in the wastelands.
Guru and Popo to the point that even Freeza seems nicer
Super Kami Guru I feel they've finally summoned the dragon... it would be a real dick move to die right now...
Dende is becoming one of these. His hatred for Krillin is so intense he gives up the location to Earth as payback for being called "Little Green". And when Krillin is stabbed by Freeza, Dende revives him, but also tells him he's immortal, probably in the hopes he'll get himself Killed Off for Real. The only person he respects is Gohan.
The phrase "Good Night Irene" is a reference to Australian MMA commentator Mike "The Voice" Schiavello, who is referencing wrestling commentator Gorilla Monsoon, who said it when wrestler Adrian Adonis performed a sleeper hold.
Just Between You and Me: Vegeta tells Cui how he got his ass kicked by Goku & Co., after explaining the Saiyans' ability to gain power from being beaten to near-death. Cui still thinks their Power Levels are the same (18,000), and doesn't get it.
Cui: "Why are you telling me this?! You'd never tell anyone this!" Vegeta: "Easy - because I know you'll never tell anybody, Cui." Cui: "But, but I hate you! Why would I—" * Vegeta obliterates Cui* Vegeta: "God, I love therapy!"
Just Eat Gilligan: When Roshi and Bulma summon the dragon to resurrect Goku, the dragon actually suggests that they just wish for him to drop the incoming bad guys off into a sun or something instead. *
There's a canonical reason why they just can't do that, but Rule of Funny was the dominant factor.
Lampshaded Double Entendre: When the cast meet Goku and Gohan and discover that Gohan is Goku's son. But due to the aforementioned traits Goku doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.
Zarbon is full of this right until he transforms, upon which he is far less subtle.
There's this from episode twenty-three:
Krillin: If you ask me all [Bulma] needs is a little wink-wink, nudge-nudge... (clicks teeth twice, then wolf-whistles) Gohan:Stillfive... Krillin: Right.
Takahata101 as Guru. "Naaaiil, stop making out with your boyfriend! I can hear it from heeere."
Laser-Guided Karma: Krillin discussing karma with Dende ("Little Green") followed by shots of Vegeta getting pummelled by Zarbon in his "Beast Within" form.
Although it would have worked regardless of who was pummeling who there. Both of them had recently slaughtered Namekian villages.
There's also a hilarious variant... in their L4D2's Let's Play.
Freeza: (Laughing after beating the crap out of Nail with Nail joining in) Ah, it is kind of funny isn't it? Nail: Hehe, I'm laughing about something else actually. Freeza: Hehehe, what? Nail: The Earthlings have the password. Freeza: [Beat]What? Nail: That little Namekian you passed on the way to Guru's? On his way to the Humans with the password, by now he's probably there and they're about to summon the dragon. Freeza: GHHGHGHHH... Nail: Yeah, if I had to guess your biggest mistake it would be not stopping him, that or the purple lipstick. Freeza: I WILL F*CKING MURDER YOU! Nail: Whatever.
Freeza: How many Namekians does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Their whole race! One to screw in the lightbulb and the rest to die... And then the other one dies, too.
It comes back to bite him in the ass in Episode 25:
Freeza: Tell me, how many Namekians does it take to— Piccolo:[(punch)]Just one.
Well, he did say "Stop me if you've heard this one", and Piccolo (by extension of being fused with Nail) actually had.
Raditz: And to top off this expositional onslaught, I... AM YOUR BROTHER!
Lyrical Dissonance: Goku's little ditty as he charges up a Spirit Bomb in Lord Slug Abridged.
Goku: Sun, sun, Mister Golden Sun, kill my enemies~!
Tropes M-N
Magitek: It's starting to be a Running Gag in Season Two. A generic medic in Freeza's army instructs his men to revive Vegeta with "delicious magical science", while Goku calls a sensu bean "sweet sciency magic."
Vegeta (After being thrown into a lake): ...Why did I explode?...
Made of Indestructium: The Dragonballs, which is why Guldo using his time-control powers to stop Krillin from destroying one needn't be done in a rush. (Well, either that or Krillinis just a wimp.)
Man of a Thousand Voices: Everyone. Nearly the entire cast of Dragon Ball Z is voiced by 10 people with their own abridged series. Here's the entire cast (note that some of the characters haven't appeared in the series yet but have been confirmed on their website and youtube account):
Lanipator (Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged and DBZA writer): Krillin, Vegeta, Piccolo, Mr. Popo, Shenlong, Radditz(after Vegeta3986 left the show), Goten
Kaiser Neko (Lupin III Abridged and DBZA editor/writer): King Kai, Gregory, Yajirobe, Korin, Cooler, Zarbon, Burter, Trunks, Buu
Takahata 101 (Hellsing and G Gundam Abridged and DBZA writer) : Nappa, Arlian King, Bardock, Dende, Guru, Guldo, Porunga, Cell
Mars Needs Women: Dende, as a member of the sluglike monogender Namekian race, doesn't even know what breasts are before meeting Bulma but instinctively knows that he wants to "nestle between them".
Messenger: He's been telling everyone that Freeza plans to destroy Vegeta! King Vegeta: Wait, my son, the planet, or me? Messenger: ...Yes. (Vegeta kills messenger) King Vegeta: Freakin' smartass.
Freeza's group is shockingly good at this in Episode 14. Freeza himself is a peppy, fey individual who can go from amusing to intimidating in less than a sentence. Dodoria on the other hand is close to Complete Monster territory, with a brand of humor dark as pitch.
In Episode 14, Goku exclaiming "This is the best day ever!" while a peppy song song plays on the background. Cut to Dodoria slaughtering Namekians.
In Episode 20, during Gohan's fight with Recoome. Inspirational music from Dragon Ball Kai plays as an injured Gohan gives a Badass Boast about Goku, but both the music and the speech are cut off abruptly when Recoome snaps Gohan's neck with a kick.
In Episode 21, Jeice and Burter have a heartwarming moment, and then Goku curbstomps Burter.
Motivational Lie: Gets used several times, once when Goku convinces Gohan that Vegeta killed his pet dragon Icarus (even though Vegeta wasn't even on the planet at the time) and by King Kai to give Goku extra encouragement when fighting Lord Slug.
Musical Spoiler: Subverted when Vegeta is blasted into the sky by the Spirit Bomb. It's followed by a scene accompanied by the rather triumphant "Omae no XXX Ten wo Tarou"... which is cut off when Vegeta falls back to the ground.
My Beloved Smother: Chi-Chi gets a clear feeling for this...until Gohan quickly and shockingly puts a stop to it.
Nappa: Well, it's been fun kid. I mean, for me, not for you. As for you (cut to Piccolo), everyone important to you is dead. Krillin: Hey, I'm still alive— Nappa: EVERYONE IMPORTANT.
Another variation:
Tienshinhan: Let's do it for Chiaotzu! Yamcha: And Krillin! (Chirping Crickets) Yamcha: OK, just Chaotzu.
Yamcha's apparent awesomeness gets turned on its head in episode 13. When they are stranded on Namek:
Bulma: Who knows? Maybe here I'll finally meet a real man. Krillin: What about Yamcha? Bulma: A real man.
And again when the Z Fighters show up on King Kai's planet. King Kai tells Yamcha to wash his car while the others train.
From episode 23:
Krillin: Now let's hurry up and wish back Piccolo, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu! Gohan: What about Yamcha? Krillin: What about Yamcha?
From episode 24, while they're deliberating who to wish back to life:
Piccolo: Just wish me back. King Kai: I guess we should ask Yamcha what he thinks. Yamcha: Uh— Piccolo: No one cares what Yamcha thinks.
Mythology Gag: When recalling his lost underlings, Freeza mentions Cui. Only he can't remember his actual name and winds up calling him "Kiwi", which is the character's original (and less inventive) Japanese name.
Piccolo asks if Namekians are demons. This is a reference to his first appearence in Dragon Ball, when he was known as Demon King Piccolo.
Super Kami Guru, unleashing Gohan's hidden potential, says he's going to go gentle on Gohan because it's his "first time". While this is a continuation of the molestation gag it also works as an explanation for why Gohan is ultimately going to have his hidden potential unleashed twice more during the series.
Also, during one of Krillin's "IcannotshutupwhenImscared" moments, he mentioned that he once had a crush on a boy that he thought was a girl. This actually happened with Krillin and Upa in one of the early chapters of Dragon Ball. (Also counts as Shown Their Work)
Then there's Goku's comment that the wound he recieved from Ginyu is the second worst hole in his chest. The first is the one Piccolo shot through him and Raditz.
Narrator: Many lives were lost, many lessons were learned, and I made out with a cool one hundred thou! King Kai: You cheating son of a-- Narrator: Can't hear you, don't care.
Naughty Tentacles: Krillin becomes a victim of these on the fake Namek planet. And also by Mr. Popo in Team Four Star's 18+ con panel.
Nested Mouths: Third-form Freeza whips out one of these as a reference to Alien.
Nervous Wreck: This happens to Krillin. He cannot shut up when he's scared.
Krillin and Piccolo: Kage Bunshin no Jutsu! [Both make three copies of themselves] Nappa: Vegeta! I can't... [smiles]believe it. Vegeta: [offscreen, in disgust]Uuuuuugggh.
New Powers as the Plot Demands: Parodied. Vegeta reveals to Dodoria that after his trip to Earth, he can now sense energy sources and doesn't need a scouter. When Dodoria asks him how he learned how to do that, Vegeta is just as clueless.
And again in Episode 21 when Goku reads Krillin's mind. His explanation muffin button makes as much sense as the canonical explanation just something that happens while he's training at high gravity.
No Indoor Voice: Vegeta spends about 80% of his screentime screaming at the top of his lungs. Lanipator lampshades it in one blooper where after recording one such outburst, he drops character to give his larynx a break and asks why he had to be cast as the loudest, raspiest voiced character in the whole show.
Not Wearing Pants: "You'll have to speak up, I'm not wearing any pants". Apparently Master Roshi's hearing is directly tied to his level of dress.
This may be a Shout Out to an old episode of The Simpsons, in which Homer gets out of the shower, answers the phone, and tells the person on the other end "You'll have to speak up; I'm wearing a towel."
Vegeta: (in the middle of a Beam-O-War) This is the end, Kakarot. You don't stand a chance! I put all of my power into this attack. Now perish with the rest of your pathetic world! Goku: Kaio-ken... Vegeta: Nooo... Goku: TIMES... Vegeta: No, no, no... Goku: FOUR! Vegeta: No, no, no, nononono—[blasted backwards into the sky]FUUUUUUU[50 seconds later]UUUUCK!
And a bit later...
Vegeta: Haha! There's nothing left now! Your last hope, and you missed! You're all dead, and there isn't a damn thing you can d—whatsmells like deer?
And then in episode 18, when Guru senses five "incredibly flamboyant" high power levels heading straight for the surface of planet Namek, Vegeta immediately realises who they are (the Ginyu Force) and starts panicking that they're all going to die.
Even Goku has one at the end of episode 22 when he realizes that he's had his body switched with the much weaker Captain Ginyu who just punched a hole in his own chest.
Jeice gets one in episode 23 while fighting Vegeta.
Jeice: What the hell happened to you? You were NOT this strong when you fought Recoome! Vegeta: [hands him the Saiyan Handbook] Looks like you have some required reading to do. Jeice: Alright, let's see here. Okay, full moon, lose your tail, stronger every time you... oh. Well I'm right f[bleep]ked, aren't I? Vegeta: Right in the downunder.
Vegeta and Krillin at the end of Episode 24.
Vegeta: If it didn't grant me my wish, then I'm not immortal, and Freeza's going to... going to... [Vegeta stares, and Krillin follows his gaze to where Freeza is standing.] Freeza: Oh don't mind me. By all means, give me some ideas.
When Freeza transforms in Episode 25.
Gohan: Krillin, do you feel that?! Krillin: I taste that! Freeza: [After Transforming] All done, and judging by the expression on your face, so are you.
Freeza causes more of these in Episode 26, when he transforms again and kills the White Mage, and Episode 27 when he pummels Vegeta. And then Goku shows up and deflects all of his attacks...
Roshi: Why Bulma's? Goku: Well I need a ship and Bulma's dad is a scientist. Roshi: I'm not even going to begin to go into what's wrong with that. I just wish you good luck.
Dr. Briefs seems to actually -be- one going by the events of Lord Slug; isolating the Gay gene and finding a meteor with his combination microscope/telescope. In addition to having built a spaceship that could go to Namek, complete with artificial gravity chamber and a suitably long-range transmitter/receiver.
One-Scene Wonder: Arguably GanXingBa as King Yemma. And his (mahogany) desk.
And the nameless farmer from Episode One (the one with the marijua—I mean, "carrot" patch).
One Up Sampo: In episode 25, when Freeza impales Krillin, he starts to do it repeatedly. Eventually, the stabs start turning into 1 UPs.
Only Sane Man: Vegeta, unfortunately for him. Gohan, Piccolo, Shenron the Dragon, and Nail are also pretty stable, though with some issues. Everyone else is generally off the deep end.
The Other Darrin: Vegeta3986 replaces Lanipator as Raditz in the first episode.
And starting in the Bardock special, LittleKuriboh replaces Lani as Freeza (subtly implied when he starts off with Lanipator and coughs mid-line, switching voices when he starts again).
This happened with Chi Chi's casting behind the scenes. The original plan was for Whiteash to handle the character, but she backed out due to life issues before Chi Chi's first appearance. Then Krisrix voiced her for the first season. Now she's been replaced by Hnilmik, a veteran of many popular flash animations, radioplay, and machinima projects as well as portraying extras in Tweeny Witches. Pick your favorite.
Because Vegeta3986 left the series, everyone he played in the series thus far has been replaced as of episode 24. Kami is now voiced by Weekly Tube Show, and Lanipator has gone back to voicing Raditz (whenever he appears, anyway). This is also going to happen to Yamcha at some point too (if they ever give him another line before cutting him off).
Our Lawyers Advised This Trope: "We here at Team Four Star do not condone child violence... We do, however, find it hilarious."
Overly-Long Gag: Jeice getting repeatedly punched in the nose.
Goku: So... Are you going to dodge any of these? Jeice: Oh, that's what the captai-[WHACK]!
Overly-Long Scream: Vegeta's scream can be heard by Krillin and Gohan miles away, Goku in outer space, King Yemma in the afterlife, and Trunks twenty years in the future. An alternate future!
The Password Is Always Swordfish: To use Kami's spaceship, activating anything merely requires you to say "Popo." How that works is not strictly defined but apparently the very name of Mr. Popo is enough for even the ship itself to bend to his whims (or anyone who uses it).
Phrase Catcher: Poor Gohan. So far he's only hearing it from Piccolo, with Nappa joining in once. "NEEEERD!" And in Episode 18, when he says "I need an adult", Vegeta, Krillin, and Guru respond I am an adult!
Poor Communication Kills: A bunch of child-soldier refugees, whose planet was conquered and destroyed by Freeza don't listen to Krillin as he tries to explain he and Gohan aren't sent by Freeza. When even Krillin proves too strong for them to kill, they still won't listen and commit mass suicide.
Vegeta: I had the scouter upside down. [calmly] It's over 9000. [breaks scouter] Rah. Nappa: [lying, broken, on the ground] Why do you sound so bored? Vegeta: Because he's still not a threat. Nappa: But— Vegeta: To me.
Gotta love how Nappa quotes his own line:
Nappa: Hey Vegeta, "What does the scouter say about his power level?"
And as shown in Running Gag below, because Raditz is so weak (and apparently clocks in at an even 1000), he's become the basic unit of measure. According to Vegeta in an announcement video, the new Dragon Ball Abridged page has OVER 9 RADITZ of Team Four Star power.
Vegeta calls out the Strong As They Need To Be aspect of power levels in Episode 26 while Piccolo is fighting Freeza.
Vegeta: "Wait a damn minute, something's wrong here. Back on your planet the Namek could barely stand up to Nappa, yet here he is now taking on Freeza. In his second form." Gohan: "What do you think happened?" Vegeta: "Well either Freeza hit me so hard I'm in a delusional coma, or..." Gohan: "Or..?" Vegeta: "Power levels are BULL***!"
Powered by a Forsaken Child: Mr. Popo's flying carpet gets 10,000 miles per soul- I mean gallon. 10,000 miles per gallon...
Ginyu: At least I'm not stuck in some useless body. Vegeta, appearing behind him: Give me a minute.
Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Only Vegeta can use "No homo" as one of these and still sound undeniably badass.
He also plans one to use on Krillin after the dragon has been summoned.
Vegeta (thinking): Ok, as soon as they summon the dragon, I'm going to rush up and snap the bald one's neck. I'm totally going to yell "Team Three Star" when I do it too!
Precision F-Strike: What's the best thing to say when you're about to save the world with a Spirit Bomb?
Vegeta's response to Goku saying he trained at 100G? FUUU***UUUUCCKK!
Freeza's Scouter before it gives up on him? F**K THIS, I'M OUT!"
Prison Rape: Few instances of it during Episode 5 when Vegeta and Nappa were in an Arlian prison.
Nappa: Hey Vegeta. Don't drop the soap.
Green Bug: Welcome to Oz, bitch! You (Vegeta) with the spiky hair, you're gonna be my bitch! I'm gonna sell you for a cigarette but not before I violate you because you're my bi-"
Nappa does this twice.
"Hi I'm Nappa and this is Vegeta. He was a prison bitch!"
Twice in the Christmas special. One of the evil minions happily flashes back to the time where he raped Rudolf.
And later with another henchman.
Krillin(after hearing the henchman's story of how he killed a cancer patient): God, you are one of the worst mall Santas ever — right behind those ones that molest kids!
Minion: So I'm the worst mall Santa? Krillin: Oh, come on!
Krillin: Well, I dunno, maybe you could have bitched at him, how 'bout that! That's all you appear to be good for these days! Huh?! Used your bitch-fu on him! Bulma: The Mistress of Bitching; that's what they should call you! (a few scenes later):...seriously! Five ancient Sages of Bitchdom all gathered together on the peaks of Mt. Bitch to proclaim your birth! And a hundred years later, when all the Bitch Stars had aligned, you were born and made everbody's life around you a living hell, because YOU! ARE SUCH! A BITCH!
Recap Episode: Parodied hilariously with Dragon Ball Kai Abridged, which recaps the entire Saiyan/Vegeta saga in a little more than two minutes.
Retirony: Probably coincidental, but Zarbon mentioned that his one-year anniversary with his girlfriend was coming up in the very episode that Vegeta kills him.
Readings Blew Up The Scale: During Freeza and Vegeta's power struggle, Freeza's scouter climbs up to "F**K THIS, I'M OUT" and then explodes.
Record Needle Scratch: Happens when the warrior Namek confronting Freeza breaks out of his heroic speech because of his annoyance with Freeza's verbal heroic speech lines count; also happens after Krillin comments that he's not the first person to die in the series moments after Goku dies (leading to the first instance of the "Krillin! Too Soon!" gag).
Recycled Script: Parodied in Lord Slug Abridged. Several of Slug's henchmen get fried after they accidentally refer to him as "King Piccolo", and even the Dragon finds his wish very familiar...
Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Vegeta learns that Krillin doesn't have the four-star dragonball, he breaks a blood vessel out of pure rage, causing his eyes to appear red.
The Rival: Yamcha insists that he and Tien are rivals in the second Q&A. Tien disagrees.
Rule of Funny: Sometimes used for the sake of a punchline.
The only explanation for how Vegeta's scanner readout was upside down when he was wearing it on the same side as usual.
And also probably the only reason that Bojack is inside King Kai's planet when in the movie, he's actually in a star that happened to be near King Kai's planet.
As well as the reason Goku has a horrific memory followed by an aneurysm when seeing Popo at the start of Season 2, yet the same episode has a flashback depicting him casually asking Popo for a ride to fight Vegeta and Nappa.
For one thing, we don't know that he was ever face to face with Popo in the Lookout. For another, a lot of things are scarier when you're helpless in a hospital bed.
Fake Namek.
Retired Monster: Dende describes the horror and blood-spilling that occurred when there was a drought and Guru had to lead them through it. And he was not talking about the drought.
Rule of Three: A few of these are slipped in every now and then.
Vegeta: "I find Cui, I kill Cui. I find Dodoria, I kill Dodoria. I find this Dragonball, I take this Dragonball."
Running Gag: The "Krillin Owned" tally, references to how weak Raditz is, Piccolo calling Gohan a nerd, Yamcha calling Tenshinhan and Chaozu gay (with Krillin picking up the slack after Yamcha dies), and Krillin being told it's Too Soon after making an insensitive remark (i.e., comparing the rundown city to New Orleans during his training, loudly proclaiming that he's not the first to die after Goku dies, telling Goku that Chaotzu is "here... and there... and there..." after Chaotzu exploded).
For the first few episodes, DOOOOOOOOOOOOOODGE! (It shows up again later.)
Also, Goku's Kaio-Ken. Every time he shouts the name, someone goes "[something]*
usually Kaio
What?" and gets punched in the face. Happens twice to Vegeta, and it even happens to Bardock during the special — he gets a future vision of Goku using it and stops blocking his opponent's moves.
Zarbon's DoubleEntendres that do nothing but heavily imply that he's gay even though episode 17 reveals that he's straight and just so happens to speak in homosexual innuendo.
One that shows up in a couple recent episodes:
Character A: "(talks about bringing something along for an emergency)." Character B: "Krillin?" Character A: "Krillin."
In episode 18:
Not Gohan: says or does something creepy. Gohan: I need an adult. Not Gohan: I am an adult.
One appears to be forming where someone mentions Yamcha, and another person remarks that they don't know who he is, but still manage to make fun of him for being weak.
"Quack!"
The person who gives the disclaimer will die that episode.
As of Episode 24, cutting off Yamcha before he can say anything.
This gag is the result of Real Life Writes the Plot due to Yamcha and Kami's voice actor Vegeta3986 leaving the team. Kami was quickly given a replacement, but to emphasize Yamcha's Butt Monkey status they don't let him speak.
Sanity Slippage: Trying to cope with the fact that Gohan stole one of his dragonballs, Vegeta starts to lose his mind, and his eyes become bloodshot. He soon snaps out of it though when someone else catches his attention.
Schedule Slip: Lampshaded by Krillin in episode 24, when he mentions that it feels like they've been on Namek for a whole year.
The Scream: Krillin in episode 13, though he's prone to shrieking in horror anyway. Just usually not to the extent where it goes on longer than a minute and can be heard miles away.
Vegeta: Ugh, I just got here and already this planet's annoying me.
Vegeta gives off the granddaddy of all screams in episode 18. It can be heard from EVERYWHERE.
Gohan: "Krillin, do you hear that?" Krillin: "I feel that." Freeza: "What the devil is that noise?" Goku in his spaceship: "Ahh, time for a delicious sports dri—huh? The heck is that?" King Yamma in the afterlife: "Purgatory... Hell... Denise? Denise, do you hear that? Oh God, is that my wife!? LEAVE ME ALONE! YOU ALREADY TOOK THE KIDS, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT!?" Trunks from 20 years in the future, on another planet, in another solar system, in an alternate timeline: "Alright mom. Once that time machine is done, I can go back into the past to save Goku and my Fathe—... Daddy?"
Gohan: I'M GOING TO EVISCERATE YOU, AND USE YOUR GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT AS A CONDOM WHILE I FORNICATE WITH YOUR SKULL! Nappa: What. Gohan: I'M GONNA SKULL*** YOU!
Ship Tease: Bulma dreamed about Vegeta coming to rape her. Okay, yeah, not the best tease, but they do canonically hook up, so...
Shoot the Medic First: Directly from the source material, but Dende is nice enough to point out that he's the white mage and no-one fucks with the white mage, before being blown up.
Acai: Lord Freeza, the Ginyu Force are scheduled to arrive in five minutes. Freeza: Thank you, Acai. Acai: Also, after rising concerns with our personnel...exploding, we've decided to form a union. Freeza: Adorable. (Acai explodes)
King Vegeta in Episode 25.
Chichi threatens Krillin with this after Krillin asks what she would do if hypothetically he were to reveal the fates of Goku and Gohan after the fight with Raditz.
Shoryuken: Freeza preforms one on King Vegeta in a flashback. He even shouted it, with accompanying an "You win!"
The TV reporter who is asked for a word to describe how dead Yamcha is gets addressed as "Mr.Kent". He also tells Jimmy to get a picture of the bald one.
Green Bug: Welcome to Oz, bitch! You (Vegeta) with the spiky hair, you're gonna be my bitch! I'm gonna sell you for a cigarette but not before I violate you because you're my bi-
Also from Episode 17: Appule can be seen playing Tenkaichi Budokai 3 as himself fighting Bardock. Doubles as a Call Back to the Bardock: TAS special.
Goz and Mez from episode four of season one introduce themselves and speak in German accents just like Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon's body builder characters Hans and Franz from Saturday Night Live
Episode 19: As he fights Gohan and Krillin, Guldo (who can stop time) does something in particular.
Guldo: ZA! WARUDO! Krillin: What are you (time stop) going on abou- (a steamroller drops on him) Guldo: You see that? That was just a taste of my power! (A still intact Krillin lifts the steamroller) Huh? Krillin: Ow! What the hell was that? Guldo: (in disbelief) That... was supposed to crush you. Krillin: Gohan, did you see it? His power! He can— Gohan: Stop time? Krillin: --summon steamrollers! Gohan: Y-You sure about that? Krillin: Positive!
Turles: You want this kid? Piccolo: I want him. Turles: You want this kid? Piccolo: I want him. Turles: You want this kid? Piccolo: I want him. Turles: You want—you want— Piccolo: I WANT THAT KID!
In the Bardock Special, there are numerous shoutouts to Image Boards and the memes prevalent on them:
Dodoria: That Bardock's a pretty cool guy. Zarbon: Eh conquers planets and doesn't afraid of anything. Freeza: Doesn't afraid of anything indeed.
Chichi: Bulma, Gohan is missing. And so is the outfit Piccolo gave him. [Beat] And Red Dawn is on Netflix! [cut to Gohan fighting Slug's henchmen] Gohan:WOLVERINES!!!
The line "Please don`t break my arm" from Lord Slug Abridged is spoken like it`s being read from textspeak. This is possibly a reference to a troll on second life named Ralph Pootawn. He`s a big green creature that when is asked to "Plz" not do something responds with "No".
Shown Their Work: In episode 19, Krillin says "I once had a crush on a little Indian boy that I thought was a girl..." This actually happened (with Upa) in Dragon Ball.
Freeza: Well, well, well. I'm legitimately surprised that I missed one of you. But that's just fine, because I've been working on some jokes. Now tell me if you've heard this one. How many Namekians does it take to— *gets punched and sent flying* Piccolo: Just one.
Sibling Rivalry: Although the two are never shown interacting with each other (just as in the actual series), Freeza and Cooler really hate each other. Freeza repeatedly calling Cooler a prick and all.
Then again, Cooler freely admits that he's a prick.
"Anyway, I figure, in order to unleash your hidden potential, I'd have to put you in immense physical danger, so I'm gonna throw you at that mountain."
Slasher Smile: Vegeta shows a nice one, just after he gets a warm greeting by Namekian villagers who tell him where find the next Dragon Ball. Cue the opening.
Ginyu has a hell of a slasher smile himself after punching a hole in his own chest, Kubrick Stare and all.
Freeza seems to have one all of the time.
Sliding Scale of Villain Threat: The Christmas Tree of Might falls not only under Global Threat, but is classified as "Disney Evil" when Goku learns that it's sucking all the Christmas Joy out of the planet.
Gohan:Krillin, that's not my dad! Krillin: Gohan, of course it's your dad! Goku, what's your favorite food? Goku/Ginyu: Waldorf salad. Krillin: See? Double Baconatohshit.
Later:
Goku:[dazed] Yay, I'm me again! Krillin: Wait... Goku, what is your favorite food? Goku:[confused] ...Favorite? Krillin: He's him again!
Soundtrack Dissonance: This plays while Nappa annihilates the Earth's military. From Nappa's perspective, though, the music is very appropriate, since he considers it to be his best day ever.
In Episode 27, while Freeza is terrorizing Vegeta and the others, Goku is sitting in his pod singing "Lime in the Coconut" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". King Kai and Tien actually join in on the last one.
Space Pirate: Bojack, who was a modern criminal type in-series (or rather, movie), but here is a traditional arrrr type, possibly to make up for the fact that he is a voice-only character.
Space X: From "space pods", "space armor", "space barns" and "space ducks" to "Space Vogue", "space Twitter," "Space Skype," "Space Hulu," freakin' "Space Mexico" and "space Old Yeller".
Lampshaded by Piccolo in episode 2, providing the quote on the Space X page.
Lampshaded once again when we learn that Jeice (who had an Unexplained Australian Accent in the original series dub) comes from Space Australia.
Jeice: "More specifically, Space Brisbane. Go Space Broncos!" Gotta be careful though Burter, or a space dingo'll eacher space baby.
Episode 20 gives us space sodas, space burgers, and a restaurant called Spacey's.
It's good food, in space
Episode 23 mentions Space Pickles, and Krillin mistakenly says Jeice is from Space New Zealand.
Planet Namek is the Space Boonies, according to Freeza.
Piccolo switched from Myspace to Spacebook.
There are even Space Eggs
For those who are curious, here's the complete list: Space Pods, Space Armor, Space Barns, Space Ducks, Space Twitter, Space Mexico, Space Skype, Space Hulu, Space Australia, Space Brisbane, a sports team called the Space Broncos, Space Dingos, Space Babies, Space Soda, Space Burger, a restaurant called Spaceys
. In their playthrough of Halo: Reach, there's also a mention of Space Europe.
Spared by the Adaptation: The Kannasans, though they died in the original show, managed to miraculously repopulate, as said by Vegeta in episode 26.
Special Edition Title: The Ginyu Force episodes use their title sequence instead of the regular.
Special Guest: Kyle Hebert (the voice of the narrator, teenage Gohan, and Ox King from the FUNimation dub of the actual series) makes an appearance as the narrator at the end of the second movie, which was before the official formation of Team Four Star but contained most of the original voices of this abridged series.
Hebert also provided his voice for the role of Santa Claus in the Christmas Tree of Might special.
Christopher Sabat, the voice of Vegeta in the Funimation dub, makes a cameo as the voice of two technicians in the Bardock Special.
Becomes utterly hilarious when you think he and Lani are in pretty much the same role, what with voicing the majority of the cast and all.
And Christopher Robin Miller of Professor Layton fame. He gives Bubbles a classy British accent in Lord Slug Abridged.
Spell My Name with an S: In episode 17, Vegeta almost used the dub spelling of Freeza's name in his note.
Spoiler: Shouted constantly by the people on Freeza Planet 419 (A.K.A. Kanassa) after the native species mysteriously repopulates itself. All of these are It Was His Sled to the fandom, but none of them have happened in-universe yet.
"Bulma and Vegeta have a kid!" "Cell reaches Perfect form!" "The real Buu is a child!" "Goten and Trunks become a guy!" "Gohan is the strongest in the universe but still doesn't do craaaap!"
Squee: Goku does one when King Kai warns him about Freeza.
Krillin: Don't you mean "Or we'll shoot you"? Mook: We know what we said.
Stock Phrases: Freeza keeps count of how many times he hears these from would-be heroes. He keeps track of even more than we do due to his constant exposure to heroic speeches; phrases such as "We're... going to... fuck your face!", which we would consider unique ones, he counts a stock, having heard it twelve times so far.
And as for the more common ones?
Namekian Elder: That...that wasn't part of the deal! Freeza: Aaaand FIVE HUNDRED! Dodoria, show 'em what they've won!
In the Bardock special, Freeza complains about having to hear said speeches.
In Episode 27, Goku finally gives one Freeza has never heard: "Imma deck you in the schnoz!"
Stock Scream: The Wilhelm Scream can be heard in the Bardock Special. Also, from the Bardock Special onwards, the dying screams of the characters from Team Fortress 2 are used for the deaths of almost all mooks.
Vegeta: Nappa, what are you doing? Nappa: It's his turn, Vegeta; I have to wait for him. Vegeta:(sputters in disbelief, as his nose starts bleeding) Nappa: You okay, Vegeta? Vegeta: Yes, just... just an aneurysm from the sheer stupidity. Nappa: Huh. Didn't think you were that stupid, Vegeta! Vegeta: (screams in rage) 9 minutes, 18 seconds. 9 minutes, 18 seconds! Nappa: What's that, Vegeta? Vegeta: Happiest. Moment. Of. My life!
Vegeta: I'msurroundedby idiots. Goku: I thought you were surrounded by gumdrops and ice cream! [Vegeta screams in anguished frustration]
Tien, while ironically being labeled gay, seems like a straight guy, almost on par with how he's portrayed in the English dubs of DB and DBZ.
Tien: I'm the only serious character in this show. That's the joke.
Also, Nail, especially in comparison with Butt Monkey Krillin and his senile and Ax Crazy master, Guru.
Stop Helping Me!: In episode 22, Super Kami Guru talks up Nail to Freeza something fierce...
Guru: Please. Nail isn't afraid of you. He is the strongest of our race! Freeza: Oh really? Nail: ...uhhh, sir? Guru: Yeah, Nail's gonna destroy your sorry ass! They wouldn't be able to air it on the news because it'll be so BRUUUTAL! Nail: Sir, seriously! Guru: Hush, Nail! I'm speaking for you.
Strange Minds Think Alike: After Nail makes it clear to Krillin that he doesn't appreciate the nickname Krillin tried to give him...
Guru: Big Greeeeeen! Krillin and Gohan: "I've got a Dragonball!"
Vegeta and Zarbon in Episode 17 try to lay low and don't want to fly around like a jackass saying "I've got a Dragon Ball!"/ "Come to papa, you bald bastard!". They were going to say "Come and get me, Freeza" but what they heard works too.
Super Sentai Stance: The Ginyu Force, as expected. In Episode 22, Goku tells Ginyu it's boring, and an offended Ginyu says that he makes these poses to raise morale.
Surrounded by Idiots: Vegeta uses these exact words when he realizes Goku's no brighter than Nappa.
Also Freeza, much to his Chagrin.
Later subverted when Ginyu, quirky as he might be, calms Freeza down with sensible advice.
Krillin: And there's no reprecussion for this? Vegeta: I will not punch you. Krillin: Oddly specific.
Take That: The AWA special is an affectionate Take That to the crew at Daizenshuu EX... at least, we hope it's affectionate, considering they interviewed TFS on their podcast and played the video at their panel...
Goku: "Man, this is worse than that time I was in high school, and all the guys called me "Geeko", and I was Piccolo's slave, I couldn't get ChiChi to like me, and... Oh wow, I hit that rock harder'n I thought."
And then there's this:
Nappa: Wait, Vegeta! Does that mean we've offended EVERYONE?! Vegeta: Hold on a minute, let me think... DRAGONBALL: THE MOVIE! Nappa: Haha...aha! Aaaaah, high school!
And then this jab at a certain dub.
Krillin: I know! I'll call you Big Green! Nail: CALL ME THAT AGAIN AND I WILL SNAP YOUR NECK!
Vegeta says this to Gohan after he runs into him in episode 18.
There are several in the Bardock special, aimed at the later villians and the GT saga, when Bardock sees into the future as he is dying.
Bardock: But wait...wait, there's more. He fights...a giant green bug...man. And then a giant...pink...manchild. Oh no, it's dark again...where is... Para Para Brothers: *rapping and dancing* Bardock: ...and I now welcome the sweet embrace of death...
Speaking of GT, in Episode 20, when Vegeta introduces himself, the "Step into the Grand Tour!" rap from Funimation's GT dub (prior to the season boxsets) plays. He quickly says "Oh the fuck with this!" and attacks Recoome.
Also from Episode 20...
Vegeta: Wrestling's fake. Crowd: *boos him*
In the Lord Slug special
Dr Briefs:Quick, get me Steve Buscemi and Aerosmith!
Talk Like a Pirate: On King Kai's planet, Bojack is given a pirate accent, it's currently unknown if this will stick.
Talk to the Fist: Jeice repeatedly gets interrupted by being punched by Goku in Episode 21.
Talking to Himself: Even though the cast is significantly larger than most Abridged Series, multiple performance is still unavoidable (Lanipator in particular, who voices Krillin, Piccolo, and Vegeta).
Lampshaded at Youmacon 2009, where Lani intros himself as playing Chris Sabat.
Technology Levels: Unknown where Earth is, but Freeza is seen using Wikipedia, SpaceTwitter, and Space Skype.
Krillin: It's been tough, but now we'll never have to see that rotten Saiyan ever again! [Vegeta crashes to Earth] ...Alive again. We'll never have to see him alive again. That's what I meant.
Vegeta: They've broken my body... I've failed in my mission to find the Dragon Balls... I even lost my tail... but at least it can't get any worse... from here... Ghost Nappa: Vegeeeeta...
Earlier:
Krillin: Ow! This can't possibly get any worse. Popo: Hi! Krillin: AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! (Krillin Owned Count: 4)
Then later:
Goku: Oh well, we won't need [all four senzu beans] on Namek!
Still later:
Ginyu: This is RIDICULOUS! But at least I'm not trapped in some useless body. (Vegeta warps behind him) Vegeta: Give me a minute. (Beatdown ensues)
And then...
Dende: "I'm your white mage. Nobody fucks with the white mage." *Freeza'd*
Ginyu (as Goku): First off, we have to touch on Freeza's balls. Jeice: Uhhh, sir... Ginyu (as Goku): Yes, yes, realized the moment I said it...
That's What She Said: Krillin's response to Burta's remark about being "the fastest in the universe."
The Unintelligible: Lord Slug is this prior to the granting of his wish.
The Worf Effect: Like, every Z warrior except Goku and Gohan. Then again, justified due to the series it's based on.
Theme Naming: Parodied in Episode 25. In DBZ canon, most characters from a certain family, race or faction are all theme-named. In particular, the Saiyan race are all named after vegetables (which "Vegeta" itself is short for), so the "smartass" Saiyan who informs King Vegeta of Freeza's plans is named "Butaraga"*
*Freeza Goon B shoots the spaceship* Krillin: "Huh... Well there goes our ship." Bulma (Offscreen): "WHAT THE! F***ING!HELL!?"
Throw the Dog a Bone: Even while Nappa and Vegeta mock Krillin, Nappa points out that, "at least you've proven that your Raditz is still stronger than our Raditz."
A literal example between Vegeta and Guldo (the green guy in the Ginyu force) in which Vegeta throws dog treats at Guldo for his own amusement
This Trope is [BLEEP]: Played straight by Vegeta in episode 19 when the Ginyu Force came.
Vegeta: SON OF A GUM-CHEWING FUNK MONSTER! WHY THE FROOD DOES ALL THIS FUNNY STUFF HAPPEN TO ME? FORGET MY LIFE! ALWAYS SURROUNDED BY MISERABLE FAILING CLODS, LIKE THIS WHOLE WORLD JUST LIKES TO BEND ME OVER AND FIND ME IN THE ALPS, LIKE I'M SOME SORT OF SLOG RECEPTICLE! WELL, AS FAR AS I CARE, THESE MISERABLE COWS CAN HAVE A FANCY BARBECUE WITH A GOD DAMN PIG!
Although, if you're listening intently, the original doesn't quite sound as... mild... as The Stinger. If you pay attention, you can clearly hear that Vegeta's actually cursing. (For instance, he says SH- before he's bleeped out, which doesn't carry over to SHTUFF.)
Title Drop: Lampshaded and called out in the Christmas Tree of Might.
Took a Level in Badass: Played straight and lampshaded with Goku, Gohan and the 'Z Warriors' in season 1. And then brutally subverted in season 2:
Guru: [about Krillin] I see something within this young man: strength yet untapped, power yet unleashed. Now hold still, as I unleash the valley of strength hidden deep within![nimbus of lights surround Krillin] There. I have unlocked your hidden potential. Krillin: Huh...I don't feel that different. Guru: It wasn't that much. Krillin: Huh. So this is my full potential? Guru: Yes. Krillin: So it's... Guru: ...all downhill from here. Krillin: Just like Yamcha. Guru: I don't know what this Yamcha is but it sounds disappointing.
Too Soon: Another running gag involving Krillin where anytime Krillin says something "offensive" on the heels of a tragedy — or in the case of comparing the ruined time city to New Orleans, making reference to a tragic event that shouldn't be mocked (Hurricane Katrina), a character yells, "Krillin! Too soon!"
Gohan: So, how was your training, Krillin? [Krillin freezes as he hears Popo's mocking laughter in his head] Krillin: [weeping]First rule of Popo's training! Do not talk about Popo's training! Gohan: Why are you crying? Krillin: SECOND RULE OF POPO'S TRAINING!
Both Gohan and Dr. Briefs try to deconstruct the idea of Training from Hell by pointing out the longterm downsides, like horrible muscle degeneration, but both are ignore by their listeners, Piccolo and Goku.
Tranquil Fury: How Vegeta responds to having his tail cut off.
Vegeta: [Calmly] You know... I thought I'd be angrier, what with the utter humiliation and loss of my tail... Or maybe I'm just so unbelievably enraged that I've come full circle. Oh well! Either way it's time to put an end to this.
Then he calmly unburdens his shame of his defeat on Earth to Cui before blowing him straight to hell. It's starting to look like the only thing scarier than a raging Vegeta is a mellow one. And, of course, Mr. Popo.
"God, I love therapy."
And used twice when his attempt to explain his superiority fall flat due to stupid remarks from Goku.
Vegeta: I'm going to start beating you now. I don't know when I'll stop.
[Later, as he's about to crush Goku's body like a grape]
Vegeta: I'm going to enjoy this far more than I should.
Villainous Breakdown: As of Episode 24, Freeza finally hit his when Nail tells him that while he spent an hour flying to the middle of nowhere and then spent a further fifteen minutes ripping his arm off, Dende has given the earthlings the password to the Dragonballs, shattering his polite and mocking facade for good.
Freeza: I WILL F***ING MURDER YOU!
He gets a second one immediately after when he realizes that his entire army, including his most elite fighting force, have been bested by a 26-year-old dwarf, a five year old half-breed (not present: his Saiyan father, who wiped four of the five) and a Saiyan prince (the last of which actually killed them all) he had written off as beneath his notice. Made for a bitchin' day.
Freeza Lampshades this in episode 25;
Freeza: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm usually far more composed. I'm just a little bit ABSOLUTELY LIVID.
Voices Are Mental: Rather impressively averted. Goku and Ginyu, rather than keeping their own voices when they switch bodies, are stuck with each other's voices, but still talk like themselves. Other users of this trope should learn from them.
Volleying Insults: Nail and Vegeta do this to each other in episode 18.
Tropes W-X
Warrior Therapist: Nappa claims that he majored in Child Psychology (WITH A MINOR IN PAIN!) and goes on about the values of healthy communication... right before pounding the crap out of the guy he was talking about (Tenshinhan) because they had interrupted him while he was talking to Vegeta.
On a less literal note, Vegeta becomes something like this, though only to himself. During his finale of Episode 10 he remarks about the possible reason behind his Tranquil Fury, and later on, after revealing the depths of his humiliation to Cui and then blowing him up to ensure that he would never tell anyone of it, Vegeta says that he loves therapy, and later on deliberately represses the memory of Dodoria's revelations. Considering that his anger seemed to have broke in Episode 18, his self-therapy doesn't really seem to be working very well.
Waxing Lyrical: Vegeta occasionally quotes lyrics from "You're the Best Around"
(whilst watching the Namekian warriors destroy Freeza's forces) Dodoria: ...Kinda killing our guys. Freeza: Oh, we have more of those things back at the ship. It's not like we're losing anything valuable.
Narrator: Long ago, on a planet long forgotten by time, a young hero was born; a righteous Saiyan warrior who would bring peace to the galaxy. This... is not his story.
What Could Have Been: LittleKuriboh auditioned for Ginyu originally. He ended up being cast as Freeza for the sole reason that his Freeza voice was so damn good.
Subverted with the scene of Goku leaving his spaceship at the end of Episode 20, to "Real American"(Hulk Hogan's theme song), due in part to episode 20 being a total shoutout to Pro Wrestling in general, and Wrestlemania in particular. Also something of an ironic Shout Out to the way Hulk Hogan was always the one hero who was always thrown up against a seemingly unstoppable heel and would end their reign of terror. The major difference between the two characters would be the fact that Hogan is significantly smarter than any version of Goku. The scene actually came off pretty badass.
What Does This Button Do?: Goku launching his ship by pressing the exact same button Dr. Briefs told him not to press.
Just don't press the start button. [slowly] The start button. Don't press... thestartbutton.
Whatever: Nail and Dende's response to being threatened with death by Freeza and Vegeta.
Wrong Genre Savvy: Gohan proposes such scientific strategies such as knocking down Ape Vegeta due to his weight ratio and escaping Dodoria due to his size and mass when it should be clear he is in the fantasy world of Dragonball Z.
Which raises questions, considering apparently Gohan was allowed to keep Icarus. Or maybe he was blown up. Continuity is kinda fucked up.
Icarus gets eaten in the next movie.
Yet Another Christmas Carol: Parodied at the end of the Christmas Tree of Might special. Ghost Nappa warns Vegeta that he will be visited by three ghosts. They're all Ghost Nappa.
You Killed My Father: Dende gets a little of this when he refuses to heal a dying Vegeta because Vegeta helped annihilate Dende's entire species.
Dende: Oh, I'm sorry. I can't hear you over the blood of my people on your hands.
Subverted, though, in that Dende is in fact convinced to do it, if only because Freeza is busy transforming into his most powerful form and Vegeta needed the power boost from almost dying to even have a hope of matching him.
Piccolo: Now go heal Vegeta. Dende: Why would I do that? (Freeza shown mid transformation) Piccolo: Because that. Dende: Oh right, that's happening right now.
Your Mom: Several. For instance, an offscreen extra does one toward Bardock when he tries to warn everyone that Freeza's going to blow up the planet.
Bardock: We need to raise an army! Random Female Saiyan: Your Mom's an army!
From the same episode as the second Cui/Vegeta exchange:
Freeza Goon A: "Damn man, you couldn't hit the broad side of a space-barn!" Freeza Goon B: "Yeah well that's only because I'm too busy hitting the broad side of Your Mom!" *gets pwned by Gohan and Krillin.*
Vegeta to Cui:
Cui: Where are you off to in such a hurry? Vegeta: Off to plow your mother. Cui: Hah! Shows what you know, Vegeta! We reproduce asexually. Vegeta: Gross. Out of my way.
