alt title(s): Digimon 02
Three years have passed since the summer we could never forget...
The second Digimon series, and the only sequel, 02 begins three/four years after Digimon Adventure.
Taichi (Tai) and company have grown up, and Takeru (T.K.), the former cute helpless kid of the group turned confident Lancer, has transferred to Hikari's (Kari's) school. They meet brash goggle boy Daisuke (Davis), girly tech geek Miyako(Yolei), and stoic child Iori(Cody), before being called back to Save Both Worlds once again. With new, stronger Mons, a few new tweaks to the evolution system, and an enemy their own age from their own world ( for the first arc, at least), these five have to work on their own few experiences with Digimon and work through having been sheltered at that time as children.
A favorite of many, despite the epilogue.
Also see the character sheet.
An official subtitled version is currently being streamed free online by Crunchyroll and FU Nimation. They are region locked, however.
This show provides examples of:
- Action Girl (Miyako)
- A God Am I
- Alternate Universe (See the main Digimon entry.)
- Are We Getting This The real world attack during the Christmas Episode
- Anti Hero/Villain (Ken)
- And to a lesser degree, BlackWarGreymon
- The Atoner (Ken)
- Again, BlackWarGreymon fits this trope as well.
- Attack Of The 50 Foot Whatever
- Badass Decay: Angemon, and particularly Magnaangemon. In Adventure, he fought better against Piedmon than two megas. In Adventure 02, we first see him hold off Blackwargreymon for all of one minute before de-digivolving, and eventually take a role as one of the many Digimon simultaneously defeated by ultimate-level Skullsatamon. As Angemon, he who once defeated foes several others couldn't take on pretty much lived to suffer The Worf Effect - only where Worf actually gets some hits in, Angemon's role was limited to "appear, fire ineffectual attack, get swatted like a bug by someone he'd have taken out singlehandedly last year."
- It's not that Angemon (and variations) is particularly strong so much as overspecialized into fighting Dark Digimon. Criteria that Devimon, Phantomon, Myotismon and Piedmon match pretty well. Put him up against a giant bug, or someone whose aquatic qualities outweigh his demonic ones, on the other hand...
- Big Eater
- Biological Mashup (Chimeramon)
- BLAM Episode (The King of the Dark Ocean looked like an important villain, right? Think again.)
- Bowdlerization An entire story arc involving the kidnapping of Ken was pulled from Disney's rotation.
- Brand X
- Breaking The Fourth Wall: The dub, multiple times.
- Break The Haughty
- But Not Too Foreign: Yamato and Takeru are revealed to be one-fourth french (which explains the blond hair somewhat).
- By The Power Of Greyskull: "Digiarmor eneeeeeeeeeergize!" /"Digimental Up!"
- Calling Your Attacks
- Canon Immigrant (You guessed it, Ryo shows up, although in blink-and-you-miss-it cameos... and a flashback that's only meaningful to those who have played the games he's from. Too bad that they're actually important to the story.)
- Cat Fight (Angewomon vs. LadyDevimon)
- Changing Of The Guard: The two youngest heroes team up with a new group, while the main characters from the first season serve as support on the sidelines.
- Chekhovs Gun (Tailmon's Holy Ring. Ohh, boy, where to begin?)
- Chickification (Sora, debatably)
- I'd say it's more of Distress Ball, since she did panic when debris almost fell on her and Yamato had to bail her out, but she did make a recovery and helped out Miyako and the Russian Digidestined.
- Chick Magnet (Yamato, by virtue of looks and a garage band)
- Circle Of Friendship (The finale)
- Colour Coded For Your Convenience (All the Chosen Children have colors that correspond to them, based on their Digivice and Crest.)
- Conspicuous CG (Exveemon and Stingmon's DNA Digivolve sequence, as well as their MegaDigivolve sequence to Imperialdramon)
- Contested Sequel (When people love it, they love it. And when people hate it, they really hate it.
- Crowning Moment Of Awesome: Takeru's reaction on Ken's whip-attack on his face in episode 19
◊
- Daisuke Took A Level In Badass in the final two episodes, and after spending pretty much half the season being the Butt Monkey of the group that no one really agreed with and the only one who always got hate from everyone else, his moment to shine was indeed awesome.
- Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming
- Curse Cut Short Davis: "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but when Magnamon gets a hold of you, he'll kick your-" Ken: "But! you didn't let me finish!"
- Cyberspace
- Dark Is Evil (The Dark Ocean, the Dark Gate, the Dark Spore...redundant, but effective.)
- Dead Person Conversation
- Dead Sidekick (Source of Takeru's anger towards evil Digimon. Wormmon sacrifices himself to help beat Chimeramon, and is resurrected two episodes later.)
- Determinator (Daisuke)
- Did You Just Punch Out The Main Villain: See episode 19. Crowning Moment Of Awesome.
- Die For Our Ship (And the intense ship wars continue on to this day.)
- Disney Death (For the Digimon; even if they die, they eventually are reborn again in Primary Village. Humans, on the other hand, are a different story.)
- Dis Continuity (which usually includes the...)
- Distant Finale
- Dub Induced Plot Hole (the third part of Digimon the movie was shoehorned into continuity, which confuses people as to why Seraphimon and Magnadramon don't appear in the penultimate episode)
- Empathic Weapon
- The End Of The World As We Know It
- Everything Is Online
- Evil Is Not A Toy (and failure to realize that will really piss off Takeru)
- Evil Overlord
- Evolutionary Levels
- Excited Episode Title
- Executive Meddling (The dub writers were forced to cram jokes in)
- Also, Jeff Nimoy stated that Digimon: The Movie was supposed to just feature the first two movies, but higher ups demanded he add the third movie in, which he wanted to be shown as a tv special.
- Expository Hairstyle Change (Where to start?)
- Expy
- Family Unfriendly Aesop (The point of one episode was "if it's really, really important, lying isn't the worst thing you can do.")
- Fan Girl (Jun)
- First Name Basis
- Five Man Band
- Flashback
- Forgotten Phlebotinum (The golden Digi-Egg shows up once to defeat Chimeramon, and once in The Movie, and is never even mentioned again. Qinglongmon later reveals that The Digimental of Miracles is actually the reconfigured Crest of Kindness, which was used to still the reactor in the Kaiser's base and also never mentioned again.)
- The Four Gods (A hint of what was to come in Tamers...)
- Fusion Dance, Composite (the DNA Ultimates/Jogress Perfects)
- Gag Dub
- Genius Ditz (Miyako)
- Gentle Giant Shakkoumon
- Get Out Of Jail Free Card
- Getting Crap Past The Radar (Davis is one syllable away from suggesting they play strip poker. And yes, you actually hear him say "strip.")
- Good Eyes Evil Eyes
- Goldilocks And The Mines Of Moria
- Gondor Calls For Aid:...In the cheesist way possible. Gained a lot of flack from the fans after such a huge build up.
- Grand Finale
- Green Lantern Corps (The Chosen Children all over the world)
- Happiness In Slavery (Wormmon (sort of)).
- Heel Face Turn (Ken was the first major enemy in the series, only after his creation Kimeramon gets out of control and kills his partner Wormmon does he finally see that Digimon are living beings and not just tools to boss around, and after bringing Wormmon back from the dead does he finally join the Digi Destined.)
- Heel Realization (Ken)
- Heroes Unlimited
- Hey Its That Voice (where to start, let's see Brian Donovan (Davis) went on to play Rock Lee, and then you have Derek S. Prince (Veemon & Ken) who went on to play Shino Aburame (both Rock and Shino are in Naruto), finally you have Lara Jill Miller (Kari) who went on to play the roles of Juniper Lee, Yukimaru and Widget
.
- Hijacked By Ganon (Guess who's responsible for all the crap that goes on in the series? Myotismon—that's right, the guy who died halfway through the last series by taking it to the crotch.)
- Ho Yay (Oh so much.)
- Hollywood Atlas (the World Tour)
- Hopeless Suitor (Daisuke)
- I Dont Like The Sound Of That Place (The Forbidden Valley Of No Return in the dub - though Cody points out that with a control spire there, it wouldn't be any safer even if it were the "Valley Of Duckies and Bunnies")
- I Just Want To Be Special (the Dark Seed children)
- I Should Write A Book About This (Takeru writes a book about their adventures in the Distant Finale)
- Image Song (49 of them, to be exact — including the duets. Most of them are really catchy, too.)
- Ineffectual Loner
- I Wished You Were Dead
- Kick The Dog (Ken)
- Kid Samurai (Iori)
- The Kid With The Remote Control
- The Lancer (Takeru serving as more of a Foil type; Ken more of the Blue Oni to Daisuke's Red Oni)
- The Last Temptation (finale)
- The episode is even named "The Last Temptation of the Digidestined." In the US version, anyway.
- Light Is Good
- Lip Lock: Most notable in the "Digi-Armor Enerrrrrrrrgize!" sequence. The drawn-out "r" just sounds unnatural.
- Loads And Loads Of Characters
- Lotus Eater Machine
- Love Bubbles (Daisuke -> Hikari)
- Lull Destruction
- Macekre (the movie Digimon Hurricane Touchdown/Supreme Evolution! The Golden Digimentals had a sub plot about the older kids being kidnapped by Cocomon cut out and wasn't meant to be in continuity, which causes continuity problems later)
- Mage In Manhattan
- Mask Power (the Digimon Kaiser)
- Mentors
- Minion Shipping (Arukenimon and Mummymon)
- Misfit Mobilization Moment: The Dark Spore infected kids in the last episode.
- Mons
- Monster Of The Week
- Morality Pet (Wormmon)
- More Than Mind Control (Ken)
- The Movie
- Mysterious Waif (Hikari)
- My God What Have I Done
- My Name Is Not Durwood (In the dub, Davis had a habit of calling TK (Takeru) everything but TK, from TV, TB, etc. Not sure about the original.)
- Nakama (Hikari and Takeru actually belong to two, including the first crew, something that Davis is occasionally envious of.)
- Narrator (lampshaded in one audio drama: he has the same voice actor as Yamato's father.)
- Narrator All Along
- New Transfer Student (Takeru, in the first episode)
- Nice Hat (Takeru's nearly ever-present cap)
- Non Serial Movie
- Not Himself
- Older And Wiser (Although the age gap between Miyako and Mimi or Koushirou is only one year)
- Ondo (Agumon's Image Song)
- Parental Favoritism
- Post Episode Trailer
- The Power Of Friendship (Guess what: Daisuke has an evolution tool that works like Yamato's crest...)
- The Power Of Love (...and Miyako has one for Sora's.)
- Previously On: In the dub, children take turns narrating, but Wargreymon did it at least once.
- Oddly Named Sequel (The timeline places the show squarely in the year 2002.)
- Phantom Zone (Ruled by a creepy Cthulhian giant sea digimon that wants to marry Hikari)
- Prophetic Names (Kari (Hikari) has the crest of light and pink glowing powers...)
- Red Eyes Take Warning Anybody wearing a Dark Ring or Spiral.
- Rummage Sale Reject
- Save Both Worlds
- Scapegoat Creator (or in this case, Scapegoat Writer. Jeff Nimoy is blamed for just about everything that went wrong in the dub, while his partner Bob Buchholz seems to get off scot free.)
- What's truly ironic about that is that Bucholz is more to blame than Nimoy. Nimoy went on to work on dubs like Naruto and Zatch Bell, while Buchholz worked on the Macekre of Rave Master, practically making it a Gag Dub.
- General consensus is that Nimoy got the worst of it mainly because his name is easier to spell (that, and he's distantly related to Leonerd Nimoy). He's rescued himself quite heroically from this, going so far as to ask fans on the With The Will forums who they wanted him to cast in Digimon Data Squad.
- Series Franchise
- Shadow Archetype
- She Is All Grown Up (gender-swapped and platonic; see page for details)
- Shipping
- Ship Sinking (every ship other than Ken/Miyako and Yamato/Sora after the Distant Finale)
- Ship Tease (Takeru and Hikari, and, to the joy of Ho Yay fans, the Jogress evolution partnerships)
- Short Anime Movie
- Shout Out (Miyako's "Mimi fantasy," in which Mimi suddenly has blue eyes so that she looks more like Utena)
- (The Dark Ocean and Dagomon. Both are Shout outs to the Cthulhu Mythos)
- Sixth Ranger (Ken)
- Sorting Algorithm Of Evil
- Squick (In the original version, the King of the Dark Ocean's minions weren't trying to get Kari to destroy their Evil Overlord. They were trying to bring Kari to him so that he could mate with her.)
- Stock Footage
- Strangled By The Red String (Sora and Yamato, and you can make an argument for Ken and Miyako.)
- Surprise Santa Encounter
- Surprisingly Good English (Wallace)
- Synchronization (DNA Digivolution aka Jogress evolution, by synching the human partners' hearts together)
- Team Shot
- Team Spirit
- Tear Jerker (Tailmon, Ken, and especially Wormmon.)
- Teen Genius
- The Promise
- The Sadistic Choice
- Sorry I Left The BGM On (Audio drama: a Digimon Analyzer screen is read off, as always, prompting Yamato's dad's coworker to ask if Yamato's dad said something. Naturally, he answers, "Idiot, that's the narration, isn't it?" Of course, both Yamato's dad and the narrator are Hirata Hiroaki.)
- There Are No Therapists (Lampshaded at one point in the English dub)
- This Is The Drill Of Power...or Knowledge...whatever!
- Tokyo Is The Center Of The Universe (Subverted and played straight)
- Took A Level In Badass: Daisuke in the two final episodes. Also a Crowning Moment Of Awesome.
- TK/Takeru was sorta wimpy in the first season, in this season he stops the Digimon Emperor's whip attack, WITH HIS BARE HANDS and then proceeds to beat the crap out of him
- Trapped In Another World (The Dark Ocean)
- Twenty Minutes Into The Future (Released in 2000, the show was set in 2002. Hence the name, Digimon Adventure 02)
- Unpopular Popular Character (Daisuke)
- Unwilling Suspension
- Urban Fantasy
- Video Game Cruelty Potential (The Digimon Kaiser exploits this to its fullest, not grasping that the Digital World isn't a video game)
- Villainous Breakdown
- Villains Never Lie (In the dub, Oikawa says that the Dark Spore is what gives Ken his talent, and uses a similar line to get a bunch of kids to go along with his plan. Everyone, including Ken, seems to believe him.)
- Wake Up Go To School Save The World
- Wall Banger (Mentioning the ending can have unpredictable effects on fans.)
- What Happened To The Mouse (The Dark Ocean, and Dagomon and Daemon therein; the mysterious flashbacks of how Ken got infected with the Dark Spore)
- The Woobie (Ken, of course)
- Woobie Destroyer Of Worlds (Blackwargreymon)
- Worf Effect (Angemon, again.)
- Your Mind Makes It Real (Constantly reappearing trope)
- Wendigo (Yes, there's a Digimon based off of this, in the Non Serial Movie. Kokomon's second form is known as Endigomon, though it's not said onscreen.)
- Whole Episode Flashback
- Xanatos Roulette: All of 02's villains' actions prove to be part of the Mon Behind The Mon's greater scheme - even the ones that would have made his greater scheme impossible.
