Pulled StongBad's quote for being too negative and very non-descriptive.
"Web comics are easy, Gunky. They're all about video games, gamernerds, webgeeks, dorknerds, gamewads, nerdgames, webwebs, and elves.
Strong Bad, Homestar Runner, web comics Steel Beast 6 Beets: Added that John Solomon's quote because you know it's true. Pulled it for being too damn long and too damn negative. (A webcomic) is when someone takes pictures and puts them on the internet for everyone to see. Sometimes these are pictures of two guys and a couch and all they do is talk about videogames. Sometimes these pictures are of prancing, mincing elves and their wonderful homoerotic fairyland. There are a lot of things these pictures can be, since the whole world seems to think that possessing opposable digits and the mental capacity to operate those digits is all that is needed to become a comic creator on par with Stan Lee or Jack Kirby or someone you may have actually heard of. John Solomon, You Webcomic is Bad and You Should Feel Bad Ununnilium: And thank you for doing so.
Steel Beast 6 Beets: And yet nobody seems to have problems with Zero Punctuation quotes which are every bit as "too damn long and too damn negative" as John Solomon's.
Now tell me, doesn't that make you one heck of a hypocrite?
Ununnilium: ...no, just someone with different opinions on what's too long and too negative.
Steel Beast 6 Beets: In that case, am I allowed to delete every one of Mr. Yahtzee's mind-mumblingly moronic quotes using the same excuse? Please do tell, as I cringe in pain every time I had the misfortune to come across of them.
Meta4: Yahtzee's quotes are funny. I like Jon Solomon, but I still think that particular quote is unfunny and vitriolic. Essentially, taken out of context, that quote comes across as a slap in the face to every webcomic ever.
Steel Beast6beets: That's exactly the reason of why I chose that quote. You see, I hate webcomics with a undying passion and I'm both saddened and infuriated at the fact no one else seems to loathe them as much as I do. With Solomon (ignoring the fact he's a fan of Orderof The Stick and Gunnerkrigg Court) and Something Awful being the sole exceptions.
Ninjacrat: See Fan Dumb, 'Toxic Critic' subsection. :)
Ununnilium: ...wow. ...you probably shouldn't be editing the Webcomics section, then.
Vree: You seem to be missing the point that with Kirby etc. (it's so great that everyone brings up superhero comics which are usually THE shittiest things story-wise, to an extent that can make even the shittiest webcomic look like a breath of frsh air) what you are looking at is a finished product. It is a venture; money and time from several people has been invested so that they can profit from it, with, and this is the important part, all the messy development bits taking place without you ever knowing about them. With webcomics you are looking at Lee and Kirby when they had significantly less skill, significantly less background, and significantly less time OR money. And not even knowing if they will really end up becoming comic artists. This does not mean that they neccessarily lack any kind of value. In fact webcomics are largely for people who who do not mind looking past the faults (even if there is a hella lot of them) and enjoy the parts that do have good in them. I insist that most artist not even aware of it but play it for laughs that they KNOW their work is very far from being perfect.
In fact I think that "webcomics are all nerdy" should be a discretited trope by now - BAD webcomics, yes, without a doubt, but I kinda get pissed when you say that because obviously THOSE ARE NOT THE ONES THAT I READ.
Seth A number of good examples are coming from webcomics but people seem unsure about using them, i made this entry to "open the floodgates" as it were. Webcomics are just another medium and if we have pages on Blogs i think we need webcomics as well. >>Alphabetization of examples is best to prevent arguments on this comic is better than that comic. >> Later: Can this entry get placed on the new media sidebar? Fast Eddie: Done. Corahs Uncle: May I add The Bare Pit Seth: I'm going to be fleshing this section out a lot, adding entries for recognisable tropes and the more notable series. I recomend other people do the same with the bigger comics they know. Tonkarz: I don't think the note after Animesque is necessary. None of the webcomic tropes apply to all webcomics, that's really taken for granted. Pro-Mole: It's pretty consensus that trope names can get confusingly hard to memorize, since there are petty things like apostrophe-avoiding and things like Sssssnake Talk out there. So, why not a consensus on one thing: the original title of the page is Webcomics, but most genre tropes go in singular(such as Cut And Paste Comic and Stick Figure Comic) and some in plural(e.g. Dada Comics). Could we just decide? My vote on plural. Sci Vo: Indexes should be plural, but otherwise singular works better for most entries. You can do {{Photo Comic}}s to use the plural of a singular one in a sentence, but you have to either do [[DadaComics Dada Comic]] or make a redirect to use the singular of a plural one in a sentence. Seth: I originally created this as a description page so it was Webcomic. It was placed on the side bar as such then it expanded to an index so i cut and pasted everything to the plural entry we are using now. Sci Vo: Incidentally, this page is now under Comics on the sidebar, instead of New Media. Seth: You like announcing stuff dont'cha. Lale: How popular a medium is the webnovel compared to the webcomic? Tonkarz: I think webnovels are less popular than webcomics but I don't know much about them. I can only think of one: John Dies At The End. Kayube: Inspired by the inclusion of a quote from the new Strong Bad E-mail at the top of this page, I feel like spreading relevant quotes all over the webcomic trope pages. I mean, it worked for YGO:TAS. Seth: I hate all those TAS quotes. Ununnilium: Let's not quote too extensively from that one sbemail, or it'll get old and tired quick. Tonkarz: I moved the PS 238 entry to the Notable Webcomics list. It is a webcomic, not a trope, after all. Unknown Troper: This troper is bothered by the fact that there is nothing, nor any mention of Vinson Ngo (bleedman) on any of these pages. Atman Ryu: This troper would REALLY like to question the courage of the editors of the Nightmare Fuel entry on Webcomics... |
