Star Wars was certainly influential, but is it really the origin of this kind of setting? I have this idea that there are earlier examples, at least in writing, though I cannot think of any concrete examples.
Looney Toons: Yeah, it was pretty much the origin; I was 14 when Star Wars came out and there was a great deal of fuss made over the very idea that the spaceships were used and beat up, because no one had ever done it before in a major feature film.
Unknown Troper: I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that Star Wars' beat-up vehicles were inspired by those in Thunderbirds. Whether or not that's the truth, Anderson certainly got there before SW.
I vaguely remember reading an article, possibly on Something Awful, containing the quote: "This was around when 'futuristic' changed from meaning 'shiny' to meaning 'curvy'. I'm not sure where we're at now, but I think now it means 'dirty'." —Document N |
