Joe Weaver: I thought The Simpsons did have a teaser until I realized that it didn't occur before the credits. Two questions, how can The Teaser page emphasizethe 'pre credits requirement' more, and is there a term for the usual setup style The Simpsons uses? (especially when it's so off the wall they have to Call Back to it later in the episode or resort to Lampshade Hanging)

Joe, the opening style used by The Simpsons is a Lead In. If you want to take a stab at characterizing that kind of opening, it would be great. (Really excellent observation, BTW.) -- Gus

Thanks. I'm going to be away from a network connection for a few days, {but I'd be happy to work on it in after that. -- Joe Weaver

Done, and done. I can't figure out how to get the markup not to consider the production numbers to be Wiki Words, otherwise, enjoy. -- Joe Weaver

I'm not sure I agree with the comment about teasers being more recent phenomena. The original Star Trek was built around a teaser-4 acts-tag structure, and from what I can tell from the 1970s books about the making of the series (Gerrold's The Trouble With Tribbles book, Bischoff's The Making of Star Trek ), it was considered a standard structure for a one hour drama.

Drop Dead Gorgias: Does Futurama really have a Cold Opening? I'm watching it on Cartoon network now, and it always seems to start with the credits.

BT The P: It's definitely there in several episodes, but it's not there all the time. The "Robot Wash" sequence at the beginning of the (I think it's the) second episode comes to mind.

{Egak}: I'm pretty sure that Futurama started with a Cold Opening, but ditched it by the middle of the first season.

Tanto: You would be right.

Licky Lindsay: I agree with the above poster about this being more common in older shows than the article indicates. Wikipedia also says it was rare in its "Cold Open" article, but this is disputed on the discussion page. I, personally, mainly associate teasers The Twilight Zone and ST:TOS. When I see them in a new show, my mind literally thinks "oh a teaser, just like Star Trek".

What would you guys consider the occurrance of the titles in Resident Evil 4 after the bell tolls? - Josh
