Looney Toons: Susan, if I've stepped on your toes here, my apologies.
Nibek: Doesn't this only apply for series that have the transformation of a guy into a girl as the basic premise? (I.e. Ranma One Half, Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl, etc.) For example, Ah My Goddess had at least episode with Keitaro transforming into a woman, but he didn't stay that way. And if the change is the main premise of the series, it makes sense that it's not going to be resolved for most of the show.
Looney Toons: I wouldn't say it's a hard-and-fast rule, but a generalization. It really does need expansion; all I did was copy the relevant quote from its source.
Andyzero: To be technical, this applies to any Involuntary Shapeshifting curse, not just gender. After all, if it were easy to cure, it would be a shoddy curse.
Tonkarz: Out of interest, who is Mandy and why is this her law?
Looney Toons: When the first (incomplete) link to this topic was embedded in a page, it was as the "Law of Anime Gender-Bending". When the person who created the links (I forget who it was now) did not immediately follow up on it, I googled on the text, and found this page
Sup, Scrounge. Reverted your change to our two favourite Gender Bender webcomics - this trope, and the examples regarding EGS and The Wotch, are more about getting stuck on the distaff side. Tedd hasn't yet shown up at school in a skirt, claiming to be his cousin and giggling a lot, though that would make for a very satisfactory Mind Screw. ralphmerridew: The Wotch has a fairly close mix of males who are converted back before the end of the storyline and males who stay female. Looney Toons: Removed this recent addition to the Ranma 1/2 example:
Twin Bird: What about Kashimashi? I've never seen it, but I know Hazumu stays female - does she even try to change back? If not, do you think it still fits? The Defenestrator: Basically, the alien says "Hazumu's a girl now, and it can't ever be reversed, ever." then the next episode or two is about her adapting, and then the rest of the series is Hazumu getting her Girls Love triangle on with the other two leads. osh: This trope title is kinda unwieldly and not catchy all. Can we got with something shorter like Gender Inertia? Haesslich: Does this apply even if the subject in question is NOT biologically a girl or boy? I'm thinking of Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran High School Host Club (the other club members and she herself keep her female identity secret so she can be around the rest of them as a host) and Mako-chan of Minami-ke (to stay around Haruka as her obsessively jealous sister Chiaki banned him from their household. Also, episode one of Okawari has Kana refusing to recognize him when he insists on coming over as a boy, which results in a Gilligan Cut as Kana returns to the door to find 'Mako-chan' waiting). Dwayne Hicks: Real physics-fanboy nitpick, but "the Law of Conservation of Femininity" is a terrible name. Conservation laws are due to an underlying symmetry (via Noether's theorem), but the female-preferring behavior implies an asymmetry. osh: Entry title is a bit long, and also never explained in the article. Wouldn't Y Meets X be a little more punchy? Gracie Lizzie: Haruka is another exception. |
