YYZ: I like the line about "it's easier to describe what they're not." I'd would add that they are not of the fashionably stupid sort either, but I don't want to take the risk of one of those types figuring out how to use a keyboard and ending up posting something here to the tune of What The F__k Is That Supposed to Mean.
Tzintzuntzan: I wonder if there should be an entry in Laws And Formulas for Nerd Morality. Basically, nerds are portrayed as a different species in every high school show, but the target demographic affects what kind of species. At one end are shows where nerds are always The Urkel (like Saved By The Bell)or slimy hackers. At the other end are media that appeal to nerds, like Daria or Spider Man, in which all the unpopular smart characters are long-suffering saints. (The Fallen Princess entry has a good description of how shows on the "nerds are saints" level pander to their target demographic.)
Lale: Scale Of Nerd Nobility?
Seth: Awesome
Shay Guy: If we're talking about the origin of the term, should we mention Dr Seuss's If I Ran the Zoo? (I think it was that one...)
Fast Eddie: Moved some stuff over to geek. Trying to firm up the definition, a little. Orange Aipom: This sounds more like dork to me. Whale dicks fail. Xesirin: My own background in these sorts of terms is inconsistent with the entries here. Nerds in my community were at the top socially, but geeks were at the top intellectually. Might be good to just make up three new terms for geek dork and nerd to have a more consistent baseline for comparison. |
