Andyzero: I need some assistance with Full Metal Alchemist, I haven't seen too much, so am not familiar with the mechanics of Arrays.
Burai: Um ... I only watched about half the series myself, but I get the sense that the most significant way in which FMA "goes into detail" about Arrays is by not having them be Instant Runes. If alchemists have to prepare them beforehand, that's not this trope (as I'm reading it) — Instant Runes is about the tendency for hocus pocus decoration to spontaneously manifest as the special effects of the spell.
Citizen: Well, since it does call it an inversion for not taking the usual shortcut, I can't dismiss it out of hand...
Seth: The point of the trope is twofold - Runes are cool - Making them takes too much time. FMA defiantly uses them for their artistically cool value but subverts the trope by having the characters prepare them. I say leave it as is, it works.
Dwayne Hicks: Indeed, a major plot point (which is explained eventually) is that Ed is one of the only characters who can perform transmutations without drawing diagrams ahead of time.
