Why not make it a page that chronicles what I Am Not Making This Up WAS, it's history, what was posted on it, why it got deleted, etc. It would be very interesting, and it would also help clear it up for people who don't know what it originally was.
To add my bit: Can we at least keep the real life examples? I can't say much else as it's already been said, but c'mon I always just looked at this page to have some fun and learn about bizarre thhings. At least keep old examples somewhere accessable maybe? And while I'm not hard-core troper, but I don't remember seeing IANMTU linked everywhere. Game Guru GG: Why is I Am Not Making This Up a blue link again? Didn't you guys cut it for people misusing the term outside of the section? So why the blue link again? Won't this mean that people will again link to it on places in the Wiki? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of cutting it in the first place? I mean, I've been against the cutting of it since the start and it is still technically cut, of course, but this course of action confuses the heck out of me. I'm questioning the logic of this action from the ones who wanted it cut, since I figure if Janitor didn't approve this to happen, it'd still be a red link. Dick Richardson: So, whining about an overused trope word, which was an example in its own right, gave someone the right to delete it? Nice going, guys! Cue-Verti: x2. What... the... fuck. Twin Bird: Most of the examples didn't even fit the trope. For the love of God, one of the redirect titles (Ridiculous Premise) didn't fit the trope! Instead, it had become just "Catalogue of Weird Shit." And that's...well...everything, really. You're making my point right now, when you say "whining about an overused trope word" was an example. It wasn't. It's only "weird" if you're in a certain mentality, and it certainly wasn't an example of this "trope."
Beforet: Now it begins. Soon pages like Crowning Moment Of Awesome and Magnificent Bastard will go the same way. Sad times indeed... Animeking194: A sad day indeed, I thought I am Not Making This Up never stopped being funny, and didn't deserve this fate. I at least think there should be a vote on if we want it... If this spreads to other tropes, its gonna be Youtube all over again. Twin Bird: There was a vote. Months of discussion. Were you paying no attention at all? And it was never meant to be funny. Count Dorku: Yes, people should be able to magically keep track of all 800 zillion pages of this wiki, including discussion pages, tropes, Troper Tales, Wild Mass Guessing, and Just Bugs Me; spend 26 hours a day on the forums in case there's a vote to delete a much-loved trope; eat; sleep; talk face-to-face with people; and watch the television we're supposed to be getting tropes from, just so great pages won't be deleted by Stop Having Fun Guys in "votes" that are basically a giant "Fuck you" to everyone who prefers reading tropes to the forums. Twin Bird: Ah, so nothing should ever be deleted because casual readers who don't care enough to check under the hood once in a while might miss it. Seriously, this went on for months. I'm not even Known, and I noticed. Charred Knight: I would gladly vote yes to delete Magnificent Bastard has it has long been nothing more than people putting in villains they like with no guidelines on what makes a Magnificent Bastard a Magnificent Bastard.
Pikawil: At least I found a loophole 'round the red links. Rogue 7: This could most definitely use a less snarky tone. I don't particularly appreciate the sentiment that everyone who used I Am Not Making This Up is an idiot. Twin Bird: The insinuation is nothing more than that you didn't read the trope, just the title, and thus linked it to anything you found a bit strange, even if others were unfazed, even if - especially if - it was part of the premise from the start. And that insinuation is the absolute truth. Rogue 7: Don't try and tell me about how I edit this wiki. I think I know that a lot better than you do. I've read the trope and the pages of examples many times over- found them highly amusing, too. I used this trope as a Stock Phrase to indicate that something absurdly strange and out there had happened that I wanted to call attention to-even if it was part of the series from the beginning. See a large part of Dr Mc Ninja. Perhaps that's not the exact definition that was given on the trope page, but I am of the opinion that tropes aren't defined by the words on their page, but more by how tropers use them. If the term evolves into "something weird happened", I am perfectly content with that. So yes, I linked it when I thought something was strange- very strange, I might add. That does not mean I haven't read the page, or didn't know what I was doing. Cue-Verti: Aye aye. Just because it has a ton of Stock Phrase wicks leading to it doesn't mean it should be deleted. Count Dorku: I'm with Rogue 7 and Cue-Verti. After all, Take That is even more misused, yet hasn't been nuked. Twin Bird: The page itself is fine, though. This page itself turned into an incomprehensible morass of examples of nothing in particular. Charred Knight: I am not Making This Up has long been a complete mess of people just putting in whatever the hell they want with no rhyme or reason for it. I could do without the petty insult which while it has been a mess was uncalled for. fleb: But... but why is the discussion page gone?! Cue-Verti: Oh, sorry. Elizabeth Swann seems to have burned it. Shrikesnest: I'd call what happened here the start of a slippery slope, but I'm pretty sure it's the bottom of one. The idea that "we voted" on this thing is an absolute lie. Maybe a dozen people decided they didn't like the page any more and nuked it. That's how we do things around here now. If you aren't a TV Tropes forum troll, you don't exist any more as far as the administration is concerned. Beforet is right. Get used to just seeing entire pages disappear, because this is going to be SOP from now on. I really hope I'm wrong, but this could destroy TV Tropes as we know (and like) it. St Clair: So much for "no such thing as notability." Starscream: here's a better tl;dr for the trope page: "we're a bunch of wikipedia whores and therefore decided we must copy them and delete all funny pages!" Kizor: I think this is a result of lax control, not overly strict control. Had there been less of our beloved chaos, it would've been possible to reign in the thousands of "I Am Not Making This Up" links while retaining the pages. There wasn't and it wasn't. Kinda like on the Evil Overlord List:
Azvolrien: Couldn't we at least have kept the Real Life examples? Those were both amusing and informative... Great Pikmin Fan: So wait, because people where over-potholeing this trope, you delete the entire page? How will that help stop the potholing? Anonymous Mc Cartneyfan: No one likes creating redlinks unnecessarily. It is a draconian solution (the abuse shouldn't nullify the use), but I can understand why the Cutmasters tried it. Count Dorku: So people will just refer to it as "IANMTU" or "No Really". The first isn't a link at all, and the second shows up blue, as does Ridiculous Premise. Twin Bird: And it will be deleted. All of these will be deleted on sight. There was no content whatsoever left in this trope entry, and no solid reason to link to it. Just a bunch of idiots potholing to it whenever they saw something novel or experimental, and then going and punching it in. Dick Richardson - Orwellian Editor, eh? Twin Bird: ...it's Orwellian to delete potholes to a trope that's been pulled by wide consensus? Dick Richardson - I don't see how "wide" this consensus was. I saw a grand total of three named tropers who hated it. Twin Bird: I don't know, I didn't count, and I only glanced over the forum thread a few times, but it looked like there was a wide agreement (albeit not completely without dissent) that this article was dead. It didn't have any real defenders on the discussion page, either, that I can remember, until it was nuked and everyone who hadn't been paying attention (for God's sake, there was a probationary period when it was redlinked with the page intact) suddenly came on to complain. SpiriTsunami: It wasn't really Orwellian—it left a bunch of empty brackets all over the place. Which has now become another in-joke. Twin Bird: Since most of you have made it clear you won't notice any other way, I thought I'd just announce here that history's in the process of repeating itself with Magnificent Bastard, to stave off complaints later on. Thank god it's back. You know they actually IP banned me for complaining about them taking it down? Now I'm back on a public computer and am SO glad to see that justice has been served.
Rule of funny, forever. Occono: Aww, is this edit blocked? I was inspired to create this and add it to the page:
Occono: Thanks for adding it Janitor!
Mr Etaoin Shrdlu: Rewrote the description to be a bit less snarky. Tell me if there are any complaints. Occono: Sorry if my picture was too snarky, the message was already on the page so I just had the idea to make that. Also, I've just seen somebody use IAmNotMakingThisUp on YKTTW so you might want to redlink it again... Twilight: Can someone please explain to me why this hasn't been brought back yet? Based on how many people are angry about it being down VS. seemingly just Twin Bird defending the cut, it seems like a given that this would be back in no time. The only semi-reasonable explanation is "they missed the forum vote," but that completely ignores the many, many, tropers who do not visit the forum regularly or at all. so why is this still down? Shrikesnest: A few people with their heads lodged firmly up their asses still think the removal of this thing serves the interests of the wiki somehow. I doubt it's ever coming back, just because Janitor, Twin Bird and a few admins would have to admit they were wrong. Sean Tucker: It hasn't been brought back because it's apparently protected. Twilight: I see, it can't be edited. Don't see what the big deal is, everyone makes mistakes, they just forgot for a minute that people exist outside the forum. To err is human they say, and the only person on this whole site who isn't human is Ad Bot. Shrikesnest: To err is human. To obstinately refuse to reinstate a page whose removal causes mass riots on your wiki is completely dumb. The trope I Am Not Making This Up has been deleted. I Am Not Making This Up!! yes, okay, dumb joke... and propably old... I'll just leave ;) Great Pikmin Fan: This real life example:
