Sci Vo: I can't help it, but whenever I see the title of this trope, I always picture it as, "Humans are 'ssthpecial'" with airquotes and a wink.
Kilyle: I feel we should have a link comparing this to Mighty Whitey. Seeing as (with certain applications of this trope) they're the same thing on different scales. Nobodymuch: This is not really why the Drej attack Earth in Titan A.E. They attack because the humans have invented a technology that could be used as an effective weapon against. That we invented it could be considered as evidence of specialness, but there isn't any other evidence that our personalities and abilities are anything remarkable. Sikon: Took out the bit about human life originating on Earth in Stargate. While the Tau'ri indeed evolved there and are the progenitors of most (if not all) human diasporas in Milky Way, the Pegasus humans evolved independently. And both were "bootstrapped" by the Ancients, who were themselves a previous evolution of humans, independent still. Joysweeper: Thinking about adding a Real Life bit. Other animals are stronger or faster or survive better at different extremes, etc etc, but we have incredible endurance(as in chase that gazelle until it collapses), dexterity, eyesight, and of course these brains... Diddgery: I've been thinking of adding this for a while, but it could potentially open a can of worms, especially since I'm not religious and can't claim I have any real knowledge on this thing. But to the best of my understanding, in The Bible the only living thing on Earth with souls are humans, and God explicitly created humans in His image. gkong3: Go ahead. The Bible stipulates that; 1. Humans were the final creation of God before He rested (i.e. the apex or epitome of Creation) 2. Humans were created in the image of God (able to comprehend morality) and the only people Jesus calls brothers and sisters. 3. Humans were to be the stewards of God, ruling over the world - and specifically given the power to name all of the animals (hence given power and authority over them) 4. In a special triple-feature of Humans Are Special and Humans Are Bastards and Humans Are Cthulhu, the entire universe was cursed as a result of Adam and Eve sinning in the garden; carnivorism and death entered the picture for the first time, and instead of humans being shepherding stewards, we are now the apex predator at the top of every food chain. The fear of humans has been put into every creature, and for good reason. I think that qualifies for special treatment, definitely. |
