Working Title: Name Change For Nightmare Fuel Unleaded: From YKTTW
Mr Etaoin Shrdlu: Why this hasn't been immediately slammed onto Darth Wiki, I don't know. Cameoflage: Speaking as a descriptivist, I think we should just have Nightmare Fuel, because, from what I've seen, most people expect High Octane Nightmare Fuel to be Nightmare Fuel But More So based on the names and treat it accordingly, rather than making the intended distinction that that trope's for stuff that unintentionally scares kids and this one's for stuff that scares adults and may or may not be so on purpose. Also, I'm not sure the age group's a useful distinction anyways, since there's few or no examples on the subpages that only scare kids. If it's supposed to be only stuff targeted to kids... well, that rule's also been shattered into a bazillion pieces by now. The Gunheart: The thought came to mind of someday just making a Crowning Moment Of Scary to put the intentional examples under. That might help cut the page size down. High Five: Woah, what's the pic from? Shadow Queen: That, my friend, is the Tails Doll made by Comick. It's the best thing for this page. After all, if the Nightmare Fuel page gets a picture, why not this page? The Guheart: Please, just no. All of the other images are still relatively tame, but that one is just...furthermore, it doesn't quite fit, as it's still a mutation of a character from a children's game, whereas this page is meant for stuff from works aimed at adults. Can't we just have a nice creepy pic of Cameron from The Sarah Conner Chronicles instead? Or a zombine?
Sadron: Whilie I love that pic to death we already have a pic of Monoko from Yume Nikki in the body horror trope. Though it's a lot cuter than that pic.
Mandrke: How about Fansadox BDSM stories, just the descriptions will make me loose sleep for a month! - NC 17 to all you wanks (possible Gorn)
A random person: The current Terminator picture is fine. Somewhat creepy, describes scary things aimed at adults, but not horribly crap-your-pants scary, as opposed to THAT GODDAMN TAILS DOLL!!!!!! I'LL KILL YOU SHADOWQUEEN!!!!!
Shadow Queen: >:3
Man Without A Body: See, the thing is, anything that is a genuine example would be too creepy to put as a picture. Also, this is so big a trope that putting up a picture seems to say "This is the Most Triumphant Example, hands down," and invites fandom warfare. Which is exactly what happened to the Magnificent Bastard page. I, for one, don't find the Terminator picture very scary at all. Perhaps it would be better if this article had no picture at all. Either that, or if we got Papa Lazarou in his Santa suit. UPDATE: That's now on the Live Action TV page. Nobody minds?
Someone seems to have left detritus for a HONF entry on Priest at the bottom of this main HONF page. Cleansing now. ~Charlatan
Great Pikmin Fan: What is that picture just above? It's apperently named "Yume Nikki AH". Unless it's fanart, that would give me another reason to stay far, far away from that game.
Mex Wolf: Man Without A Body may be right, but I think you're missing something. High Octane Nightmare Fuel isn't just a visual trope, but a general one. I think we should put up something that's only really scary in action (Might I suggest a fast zombie?
TsundeRay: (crossposting from Nightmare Fuel Discussion) So we have Nightmare Fuel for unintentionally scary works for kids, and High Octane Nightmare Fuel for intentionally scary works for adults. But where do intentionally scary works for kids or unintentionally scary adult works go? The hell between Nightmare Fuel and High Octane Nightmare Fuel? DalesKaine: Uhm, this troper...want the termninator picture back. I found the current picture to be a bit...... unsettling. A Random Serf: Wazzit from? owh: I don't know either, but I'm inclined to agree. It looks like a demonic wolf, perhaps from Resident Evil or something like that. It links to Mind Rape instead of a show/movie/whatever that would give it more context, and so I'm not really sure it's a great choice. One more vote for three? DalesKaine: For the HONF title image, how about a Holocaust related picture? I think it would suit well. The Gunheart: Maybe for Real Life, but the main image should be from a work of fiction. This is TV Tropes, after all. The Terminator pick is fine: it's from a work that isn't meant for kids, won't cause readers to avoid the page, and was inspired by an actual nightmare. The Noun: I was wondering... the current picture just really isn't frightening at all. Seriously, while the reddish smile-dog-thing was horrible, the more realistic looking dog didn't make this troper scream, close the laptop, and dash out of the room. So why did we get rid of it? I was also kinda considering maybe using this Yuvalescent: Thank you for not having Smiledog on the main page anymore. That is all. D: Random Contributor: I'm personally glad to see the Terminator pic. Granted, it's not that scary (far less scary than that creepy pedo bunny on the normal Nightmare Fuel page), but it doesn't make me want to head for the hills. Like how the old picture for the Eye Scream page made me avoid said page for about five months. Lipwig: We're getting a little generous with the separate pages, aren't we? The pages for Monster and Neon Genesis Evangelion have plenty of material, yeah, but last time I checked, the one for IT has about four examples, while the one for Mirai Nikki has one. Any chance we can merge these two back into the main Anime and Literature articles and get some clear guidelines on when/when not to make a new page? owh: I wouldn't complain. We're probably going to see more pages in the future because of immigrants from Nightmare Fuel which just got a massive clean-up recently. The Alien Nine page is pretty half-hearted, too. Something about those anime fans, I guess. There was a link to an interactive video featuring a doll that would do a variety of extremely disturbing things on the artist's web page that is now gone, or I at least can't find it. Does anyone know where it is? Okay, am I the only one who has a problem with "Nightmare Fuel Unleaded" being an alternative name for "High Octane Nightmare Fuel?" I mean, HONF makes sense, since high octane generally means (at least marginally) better performance; unleaded fuel, on the other hand, has few if any benefits over leaded fuel other than being less polluting. In fact, leaded fuel was actually invented because lead-based additives improved performance, and the switch to unleaded (i.e., using non-lead-based additives with similar effects) was wholly motivated by health concerns. I can't be the only one bothered by this, right? Are people really just that uninformed? |
