Guilty Pleasures Discussion
Blink Dawg: Is this a Subjective Trope or a checklist? Child pages, anyone? —- Steel Beast 6 Beets: This is the only article I expected to find an entry about Buffy The Vampire Slayer, yet it was the other way around.

Needless to say, I'm pretty disappointed.
Gus: There seemed to be sufficient consensus in the Bad Yet Popular Discussion that there is a class of shows that people watch that they know are bad — this would be distinct from the Bad Yet Popular class in that the show may not be popular at all. I'll kick it off here, in the most minimalist way possible.;-)

//Later: The consensus in Bad Yet Popular Discussion was that "Bad Yet Popular" was a title that was just asking for trouble in determining what bad means and what constitutes popularity. So we start over.. The bullet items in Guilty Pleasures could each use a little blurb about from whence the 'Guilt' arises for the show...

Tzintzuntzan: Assuming that the "Bad Yet Popular" entry is dead, do we still want some way to distinguish between Lowest Common Denominator bad (like Baywatch or Power Rangers) and campy cult-show bad (like Troma, b-grade horror films, and some of the Williams Street stuff)?

Gus: Sounds like something that could be mentioned in the blurb for the items listed here. For example: "Too campy for words." "Lowered the LCD another notch each time it aired."

Janitor: Yeah, without the blurbs, the line items are pretty HulkSpeak-y: "Batwatch bad!", "UPN bad!".

Janitor, again a little later: I hit the ones I've seen. Somebody else will have to pick up the others.

Ununnilium: Taking out:

It can get really sad when at the end of the day, this is immediately what comes to mind when people think of anime, much less the summary of Japanese culture altogether.

...because it's been in and out and in and out and is a bit harsh, really. Also! Have no idea what the bit that starts with "If you're American and over the age of 12, anything anime or Animesque." means. Is it pro-anime? Anti-anime? An attempt at an objective viewpoint?

Tanto: I think — though damned if I know, I didn't write it — that it's trying to say that if you're over twelve, you're embarassed to watch anime-type stuff because of how it's generally perceived — i.e., anything animated is kids' stuff. Which I could see. It's not very well-written, though.

Lale: Sorry for being confusing. Yes, Tanto, that's exactly what I meant. Meant to be sound pro-anime.

BT The P: I'm thinking we need an entry about stuff that actually is good, but you can't admit to liking in certain company. Like maybe the Fan Closet? Especially those of us with blue collar jobs, we have to just keep our fool mouths shut on a lot of what we like and do.

Seth: Unrelated: Deep fried snickers bar? 0.o

Air Of Mystery: My dad saw deep-fried Mars Bars in Scotland.

RA Kthe Undead: I've eaten deep-fried Mars Bars. They sound a lot worse than they taste.

Cassius335: Isn't the Pokemon entry a tad too subjective? Frankly, I suspect whoever wrote that as not having actually SEEN past the first 13 episodes (or, at most, anything after Season 1 or so). The battle quality (especially the Gym battles) has gone up a lot over the years, for starters.

Ununnilium: I put it in, and I watched regularly during the first three seasons and sporadically after that. I haven't seen anything which would contradict that — except, come to think of it, a few of the movies. (Plus, did you see what was in there originally?)

Cassius335: It's on Season 10, Unun. It's a tad unfair to judge 10 seasons on just the first 3 and a few random eps afterwards. At least look up and download "The Great Eight Fate"/"Eight Aint Enough" (Ash Vs Juan for the final Hoenn badge), because that fight beats the holy hell out of Pewter and Cerulean Gym put together.

Ununnilium: Well, I also read episode recaps through... I think season 5? Anyway, I'm going to wait for someone else who's watched the show to come along and make a judgment.

Lale: Totally Spies — shouldn't there be an explanation, like with the other examples?

Cassius335: Am I the only Pokemon fan on here?

Electivirus: No, you are not. Many people only watched Kanto and (in some cases) the Orange Islands, so that's probably where the Guilty Pleasure bit comes from. Well, that and the fact that the entire Pokemon franceis is generally aimed towards kids anyway. That being said, I personally feel that AG and DP both beat the crap out of the earlier seasons (this coming from someone whose watched literally every episode since the anime's premier).

Inkblot: It doesn't matter if the show's good now. This trope is about public perception, not actual quality, and due to its first few seasons Pokemon is considered to be a cheesy show directed at 4-year olds. Once a show develops that stigma, it takes decades for it to go away. No, i'm not bitter.

Sikon: What's wrong with Star Wars novels? Except for Glove of Darth Vader, of course. And Crystal Star.

Seven Seals: What's wrong with deep-fried Snickers bars? If you can eat them without feeling guilty, arguably nothing. I can't actually speak for the Star Wars novels, but almost every Expanded Universe novel I've ever read of other universes falls squarely under this. They can be enjoyable, but you don't want to admit to liking something so much that you'll even read stories about it that are puerile Rule Of Cool vehicles. Well, most people don't.
Looney Toons: In re Power Rangers:
but we can all remember jumping up and down on the couch and singing along to the Title Theme Tune.
No, not all of us. Some of us are old enough to have skipped this entirely. We have other things to destroy our dignity over. <grin>
Air Of Mystery: Removed the line Also Conan The Destroyer, which features the line: "Some wizard you are! Go back to juggling apples!" - spoken by an Arnold Schwarzenegger who didn't yet know English, and was simply parroting the sylables he was given. because A - Arnie knew English by that point, considering he'd lived in America for sixteen years and B - it wasn't spoken by Conan, it was spoken by Malik the Quick.
Uknown Troper: I wish to plead Refuge In Audacity for the Black Lagoon example — I mean, come on. Who the hell takes an anime with a killer terminator maid, a torpedo boat/gunship joust and a main character who can jump seven feet into the air and has the vision lanes of a chameleon seriously?

Willy Four Eyes: Agreed, though I'm gonna leave it here, too, but cut the example down a bit, as it's starting to become Walls Of Text.

Charred Knight: Guilty Pleasure does not mean bad, it means that the show has no real substance. That's why the name was quickly changed from Bad But Popular. Hell I like some of the stuff listed especially The Mai Otome manga which is hilariously insane.

Willy Four Eyes: And as-yet unlicensed in America. Probably won't be until the rest of the anime episodes are released here, if at all. Speaking of...should Dear S and/or Eiken be placed in this section? I remember reading one review of Dear S saying that it's "Chobits gone horribly, horribly wrong." And, uh...the "WTF-cups" in the other show...I'm not going anywhere near that.

Twin Bird: Taking out Death Note, since that's not the way the phrase is usually used. Yes, you might feel guilty for sympathizing with Light, but the same can be said of Crime and Punishment...this is usually for things you know you shouldn't like, and Death Note is revered in anime circles.
Eric DVH: Oh come on, is this part of that I'm-cool-because-I-hate-Robin-Williams thing going around nowadays? I've never heard the show classed as trashy in the slightest, and while the writing does have some predictability, it's leagues wittier then typical sitcoms:
  • Mork And Mindy — This troper can't bear giving up even after realizing it's pretty crap.

Charred Knight: I think a lot of people have somehow misunderstood this trope. Deleted all of these because none of them are trashy enough to count.

  • Mahou Sensei Negima is really, really good. But you try reading it in public, what with all the Panty Shots and Fanservice. I read it for the story, I swear to God! Alright, confession. Setsuna is hot
Charred Knight: Die Hard, Rambo, and Predator are considered EXCELLENT ACTION FILMS!

Charred Knight: South Park won a fucking EMMY!

  • South Park: It is, very often, horribly disgusting but hilarious and clever.

Charred Knight: I have only heard good thing about these things. Condemned has an average review score of 80% if a low B is your idea of terrible than your standards are too high.

  • This troper recently discovered Metalocalypse and found it very funny, both as a parody of obsessive paranoid fans and a weird cartoon.
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins, a terrible game with a ridiculous, awkward combat system, nonsensical plot, poorly designed levels and unskippable cutscenes that requires 100% completion to see everything. This troper enjoyed and finished it, though he never bothered to get 100%.
  • Dragon's Lair: This troper hates quicktime events and button mashing yet loves this series

Charred Knight: Deleted for over exaggeration, at most 1 in 10 (and most likely 1 in 20) end in violence, and and Penny-Arcade is considered one of the best webcomics out there, and is the PRIMEIRE video game comic.
  • Premiere; pronounced "prem-ee-air".

Falcon Arrow: The NOAH reference is to KENTA & Taiji Ishimori vs. Kota Ibushi & Naomichi Marufuji on July 15, 2007 (Summer Navigation '08). KENTA & Marufuji were a regular tag team in the early 2000s (and inaugural "junior heavyweight" tag team champions) until they successfully defended their respective singles belts against each other. The way this troper read their match, it was as if they were a couple who'd broken up and moved on, only to find new partners somewhat similar to their previous one, and then for both couples to meet up. KENTA did not take it well at all, while his de facto replacement (Ibushi) tried to prove himself to KENTA's ex (Marufuji)... and stay alive in the process!
Anonymous Mc Cartneyfan: Sesame Street is a mix of animation and live action, but the Muppets are live-action. They have a physical presence in the real world.
Seven Seals: Is it too early to mention the new Knight Rider yet? This show is so dumb... I love it. I just watched the Halloween episode, and Sydney Poitier's line "I'll drop you like a bad habit" has been the highlight of my week (yes, it's been a slow week, but still).
Trouser Wearing Barbarian: Nice to know I'm not the only Joy Division fan who liked the Killers' cover of "Shadowplay." (While we're at it, their version of Morrissey's "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself" is fantastic.)
Adam850: My god, some of these Drive By Updaters must have been struck retarded by these Rhetorical Question Blunders. "Try to find someone who admitted watching..." isn't an invitation to add five levels of frickin' bullet points arguing over something. "Well, this Troper liked ..." isn't useful. /venting

Grev: I think the page needs a good nuking, actually. Maybe make it a page with examples of Guilty Pleasures in media, and then take all of the actual non-subjective parts to Troper Tales...
Mysticpenguin: I have to say I'm confused as to why there's a Troper Tales page for this trope. I mean... it's already a subjective trope. All you'd have to do for any of the entries on that page is maybe reword the "this troper" stuff out and it would be exactly the same as the examples on the regular page. Is it just for the people who can't live without the Internet knowing that they're talking about themselves, or what?
