For the record, Padway knows enough Latin to get by, although he has Goths assume he's one of them, from the "Chersonese" (? probably Crimea) because of his barbaric accent. They're disappointed when he can't speak Gothic, but bringing distillation to the 6th century heals many wounds...

Lots42: There is a semi-recent awesome Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel floating around (whose name I am of course blanking on). In it, the fearsome foursome travel back in time to stop various past-time Slayers from being slaughtered in order to change the timeline. Past languages, when needed, are dealt with in that Giles is a Watcher and has to know old languages in order to read spell books.
