Working Title: Better Than It Sounds:
From YKTTW
Tanto: This seems a lot like
They Fight Crime... in fact, it sounds
exactly like
They Fight Crime, with the added drawback of being something that probably should have been
Taken To The Forums.
Charred Knight: I suggest pre-emptivly splitting this right now before it gets unwieldy, and I see no reason for this page other than to see if we can mention every single series on TV tropes.
Kizor: So there are plenty of reasons for not having it here. Is there
any reason not to have it on the forums?
- Katsuhagi: I think there is a difference between this and They Fight Crime in that the series described aren't inherently ridiculous, but the descriptions that we come up with for them are and are supposed to be funny. If we need to we can take this to the forums, but I don't think it's lumpable with They Fight Crime outside of sharing elements of being ridiculous.
- Bob: Sure, this is one of those Just For Fun pages, but it is funny and if we split it up into sections by genre like we did to Crowning Moment Of Awesome and Nightmare Fuel, then it shouldn't be to unwieldy. It'll require some upkeep to keep it separated from They Fight Crime, but probably no more than it takes to keep Complaining About Shows You Dont Like out of Family Unfriendly Aesop.
- Katsuhagi: Since I came up with the idea I'll keep an eye on it to keep it from being too unwieldy, but this was obviously something people enjoyed doing. I'd be adverse to splitting it just yet as it takes some of the surprise out of what's being discussed, but we can see how things go.
- That Other 1 Dude: It's much easier and enjoyable to read as an article than as a topic on a forum.
Tanto: Most things are. That's not really a worthwhile excuse.
Meems: Eh? This website is also much easier and enjoyable to read if we avoid writing in chatspeak. Would you say that's not a worthwhile excuse to not write in chatspeak?
My point is, it's
Just For Fun, therefore being enjoyable and easy to read is very important.
Also, I've moved the
Avatar The Last Airbender example into Western Animation.
Tanto: That's a horrible analogy. (Your example deals with the wiki's form; my objection concerns its content.) The point is that this kind of thing is not within the wiki's scope. It
used to be, but not any more. They inevitably grow out of control
and are little more than exercises in subjectivity and listing things people like and don't like. While I'm sure this is all very interesting to some people, that doesn't mean it belongs here.
There Is No Such Thing As Notability =/= Post whatever you want! The wiki is your oyster!
Medinoc: I've just seen the
Okami example in
Anime. Isn't it a video game ?
Crazyrabbits: Sorry, my fault. I re-edited the page to organize it into categories. I probably got a couple of examples misplaced.
Bob: I've removed one example for containing to many spoilers and spoiler marking the description kind of removes the point of it being in this article, If whoever added it wants to put it back, please rewrite it. Saved here with spoiler marking.
- Oldboy: The main character is imprisoned for fifteen years in a hotel room because he saw a former school classmate having incest with his sister. He is then tricked into having an incestuous relationship with his own daughter, while killing the men who imprisoned him.
Servbot: Somewhere along the line, we got two Batman examples. Removed the shorter, more obvious one.
- Maxmordon: Sorry, I couldn't give the answers of mine; these are:
Eragon:Put the whole plot of Star Wars on the wolrd of Lord Of The Rings. Add dragons
BrazilSome guy chases the woman of his dreams on a dark dystopic world ruled by an autoritarian government, they are mistaken by terrorists and executed. And it is a comedy
10,000 B.C.: Some cavemen cross half the world to save a woman, get friends with other tribes, kill the makers of the piramid and live happily ever after
The MetamorphosisSome Jewish guy discovers he is cockroach, is affraid to get fired, ashames his family, gets killed and his family ends up missing him
Query, what's with eliminating the entire Video Game example section in the course of categorization?
- Katsuhagi: Forgot to link it on the main page, that's what. My bad, I got interrupted while doing this, should be up now. I haven't gotten around to Comic Books and the remaining ones yet.
Adam850: I know it's all subjective and crufty, but damn, I love it. It's fun and interesting. Also, remember to not make to example too long. Simplicity. Unless the this is simple itself.
Pong is so simple that I made the description long.

That Other 1 Dude:
Homestar Runner is listed under
Western Animation, though there's more to it than SBE.

Redkun: I can't help but feel like a lot of these entries are missing the point entirely. I see a lot of entries that are just three-sentence summaries of a series. There's no attempt at condensing it down to the point of ridiculousness.
Kilyle: Okay, to begin with, I hope this article and its subsections stays around for a long time and becomes really good. Just because it's subjective and has the
potential to be stupid doesn't mean we have to get rid of it. I just discovered it today, and am looking forward to seeing what people come up with. Secondly: One description on the first page there ("spends much of its time hosting arguments about what qualifies as knowledge" or some such) is
Made Of Win. Um... do I have to physically put it on the Made Of Win page to nominate it?
Kilyle again: Okay, so I got to
Freakazoid's
Nerd gains superpowers while losing sanity (on the Western Animation page) and now I'm thinking we need to split this somehow... or... something. I'm thinking a line like "It'll Never Sell" heading a list of extremely pithy examples... not so much detail, but closer to
They Fight Crime (only not ending in that line at all). Whereas the longer and more detailed entries can stick it out in this section. But I would love to see a list of extremely short "sales pitches" which all are actual series that are currently selling well, but can be summed up in less than ten words and sound extremely dumb when you do. Anyway, just a thought. ETA: ...and, apparently, what
They Fight Crime is already doing... except that it's not all popular series (Woops, unfortunately, tanked almost immediately), and they're not spoilered. Hrm.
HandleThis: Why not a BTIS for music? I'm just dying to put Dragonforce in there somewhere...
Kilyle: Yes, yes, please! I want to see how many I can guess.
Large Blunt Object: Renamed
Better Than It Sounds Tabletop RPG to
Better Than It Sounds Tabletop Games, turned the old title into a redirect but I'm not sure if it's needed (no wicks).
Inkblot: Is it just me, or has almost everyone on this site missed the point of this article?
Trouser Wearing Barbarian: No, you're not the only one bothered by this.
Inkblot: Is this section a
Nietzche Wannabe flame war in the making, or did the tropers succeed in making love
Better Than It Sounds?
- Love: Staking your happiness on another person, often making you miserable, crazy,
or and evil. And it's involuntary.
- Some forms can be partly described as a weird trick nature plays on humans to help keep the species going.
- Don't be silly; there is no such thing as love. It's merely a name humans put on lust to make themselves feel better about it. And it is completely voluntary if you have enough self-control.
- What about people who are asexual, but still fall in love?
- They're clearly attracted to something other than the person themself. It could be their money, their way of life, their ideas, or anything else.
- Now who's being silly? Try divorcing money, way of life, ideals, and everything else from the person holding them. What you're left with is a pathetic, morally bankrupt creature whose only goal is to make sure that it survives, at the expense of everything else. You seem to be defining 'person' as 'manifest body', making your argument a Self Fulfilling Prophecy. But then again...there are fora.
re:
Fight Club entry: The character doesn't have schizophrenia. Schizophrenia and multiple-personality disorder are unrelated.
- Re: schizophrenia/multiple-personality disorder confusion: multiple personalities conversing with each other really confuses the issue, particularly when at least one of the personalities is apparently hallucinating a different physical appearance of another one.
Man Without A Body: Can we get a page of
Better Than It Sounds Troper Works?
Anomaly: For that matter, can we just break some of the examples on the main page onto a separate "Web Original" subsection? A lot of
Troper Works would fit on
Web Original, anyway.
