Working Title: Bee Weapon:
From YKTTW
Stupid Flame War
Cosmetor: It isn't much of a discussion if you ignore everyone who doesn't agree with you.
Cassius335: The "everyone" he's ignoring? That would bee you and... no-one else.
Cosmetor: Except, of course, for the many other people who disagreed with you, but of course you'll continue ignoring them.
Meta Four: Rereading that discussion, it would seem that you were the only one opposed to that title, Cosmetor.
Cosmetor: Rereading the discussion more carefully, no it wouldn't. The title obscures the meaning of the trope and makes it seem more specific than it is. And let's not forget that it was picked specifically to be annoying.
Meta Four: Okay, my initial count was off, but 12 people voted for
Bee Bee Gun, 1 person voted for
Bee FG, and 3 people voted for
Bee Shooter.
And it's wasn't chosen to be annoying, it was chosen to be
Punny. This is hardly the first time the wiki hive mind has chosen to sacrifice absolute clarity for the sake of a joke, and I guarantee it won't be the last.
Cosmetor: No, it was chosen to be obnoxious. And the vast majority of the examples
don't involve guns at all.
Cosmetor: Okay, if nobody has any objections by tomorrow, I'm moving this over to
Bee Holder.
Servbot: I have an objection. You're the only one agreeing to this, going against the wishes of everyone who participated in the creation of this trope, and generally acting like a prick. And you're running on suspicions about people being obnoxious without any basis other than "People do not agree with what I want".
And you're one to speak of obnoxiousness, considering your generally trollish behavior in several net communities. Didn't your getting repeatedly modded in
Game Faqs and your double banning in at least one other forum teach you anything?
Cosmetor: Excuse me? We aren't talking about petty grudges from other sites. And this "everyone" you keep talking about is quite clearly not actually everyone. I am not running on "suspicions"; the people who voted for this title stated outright that they were deliberately trying to be obnoxious. If anything is trollish, that is.
Servbot: If that's the case, list them and let the other tropers decide as well. This is a wiki, we run on the majority's decision, not on just one person's, especially in regards to something as major as the name of a trope. As of now, everyone else sees that the name was chosen in good faith, so let us see the comments that you see as proof that it was chosen to annoy other people.
CAD: Just to clear up something:
Obnoxious = Good
That is all.
Cosmetor: Maybe for
you it is, but what about the people who are actually
annoyed by annoying things? How often do you think about their feelings? Though for people like Servbot, that's probably what makes them good.
Rogue 7: Dude, it's the title of a frikin' trope. Chill.
Bee Bee Gun is funny. It's not meant to offend anyone, it's not meant to be obnoxious. It's
Funny. The trope is Bees=weapons. Guns=weapons. Therefore, by the transitive property, a bee bee gun applies quite accurately to the trope. You're outvoted here, concede gracefully.
Cosmetor: It is meant to be obnoxious. The people who voted for it said so. It's not funny. Virtually none of the examples are even remotely gun-related.
Cosmetor: Another note: if you
really don't care that much, why not respect the wishes of those who
do care?
Kilyle: I don't know how long ago this discussion took place, but I figured some people might like to know how the
YKTTW discussion went without having to wade through everything (since it's mostly examples). So the following section is the part of the discussion regarding the proposed names. (Also, my two cents: I don't see how Bee
Shooter is any more general than Bee
Gun, given that the argument goes along the lines "Wait, many of these examples aren't gun-related.")
Note: I used
bold for the introduction of a title,
bold italics for a vote (including
two three votes that don't mention the title), and
plain italics for when the title got mentioned but wasn't a vote.
The Adversary: Let's call this Bee Afraid.
Meiriona: oh, god, Bee Afraid made me groan too loud for 1:30 AM.
Space Jawa: Just Bee Afraid, or Bee Afraid Bee Very Afraid? Or is the second one too much?
UT 71: Bee Afraid - with Bee Very Afraid as the first line in the actual article itself.
foxley: Bee Shooter? Still a pun, but not nearly so painful.
Black Dragon: And another vote for
Bee Afraid. Can't pass up a pun THAT bad.
Scooter007: How about this one: Bee Bee Gun.
Servbot: Ow, Scooter. Just... ow. I like it! ((That's one vote for Bee Bee Gun.))
stardreamer: Yet another vote for Bee Afraid.
Tera: I vote for Bee Bee Gun.
Space Jawa: I change my vote to Bee Bee Gun. With "Bee afraid. Be very afraid." as the first line of the article.
Nyperold: Bee F G? ;)
Cosmetor: No. I vote for Bee Shooter, because it encapsulates the trope better than anything else I can think of, and is the least obnoxious pun suggested so far.
UT 65: Aww, come on, the more obnoxious the better! :) I vote for Bee Bee Gun, and second Space Jawa's suggestion.
Indigo: Bee Bee Gun for the win.
Cosmetor: No, trolling is not a good idea.
Patsy: Bee Shooter.
Cosmetor: Yes, using titles that don't deliberately annoy people is a good idea.
Fawriel: ...I don't get the pun behind Bee Bee Gun. What's so obnoxious about it?
UT 209: I vote for Bee Bee Gun.
Bobby G: @ Cosmetor: No offence, but since when did liking a title you don't become trolling? And I don't see how
Bee Bee Gun is particularly worse than
Bee Shooter. It's just funnier.
Nate the Great: Thirded on Space Jawa's idea. ((That's a vote for Bee Bee Gun, with "Bee afraid. Be very afraid." in the text.))
UT 206: And 1 more vote for Bee Bee Gun. I've seen MUCH worse puns as trope titles. Bee Bee Gun actually makes me chuckle a bit.
Bisected8: Space Jawa has managed to strike the metal pin in a manner that drives it strait into a block of wood to serve as a permanent bond. ((That's one more vote for
Bee Bee Gun, with "Be afraid" etc.))
Cosmetor: It's trolling because people are supporting it specifically because other people don't like it.
UT 82: I don't agree about the whole trolling thing, but I'm throwing a vote in for Bee Shooter regardless. I think the repetition required for Bee Bee Gun actually harms the pun a little.
Servbot: ...wait, which tropers are choosing Bee Bee Gun just to annoy others? People are choosing Bee Bee Gun because, in general, tropers like bad puns. Besides the droll humor, it makes things easier to remember.
Wulf: I vote for
Bee Bee Gun, even if it is repetitive, it's a funnier pun than
Bee Shooter. And to be honest, Cosmetor, you're the only one that specifically said you don't like that title. The only other person was joking about the pun being so bad, and said they like it in the next line.
Bee Bee Gun is a
So Bad Its Good pun, I think.
UT 139: Definitely Bee Bee Gun.
Kaybor: I think Bee Bee Gun is the winner here.
Wasn't there a mention in one of the short stories in Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles" of a Martian weapon called "the bee gun?" I would add it but I can't recall which story it was part of.
Seven Seals: This discussion is highly relevant to the subject:

Dareon: Would
Dead Rising 's zombie-killing queen bees count? It seems a bit too singular a bee to count as controlling swarms, but it is highly destructive.
Joysweeper: Figured I'd put this here.
Cut
- So a trainer that uses Vespiquen controls bees that control bees?
- In the animation it shows regular bees...
Honestly, is it impossible to talk about Pokemon without delving into natter?
I am not sure how related it is, or whether it belongs in the main article, but apparently wasp species in Europe are sufficiently different that Europeans may not necessarily understand what this trope is or what it is about.
Bees are the semi-domesticated ones that make honey, and are known both in Europe and North America. They tend not to be quite so aggressive, as they have barbed stingers which lodge in the recipient's skin and so will die shortly after stinging only once. There are also "killer bees," an African strain of the species that is much more aggressive, but they are rare in North America because cool weather tends to kill them.
In North America there are many, many species of wasps. For purposes of this trope the significant difference between bees and wasps is that wasps have no barbs on their stingers, and can sting again and again without harm to themselves. The ones that most commonly attack humans are:
Yellowjackets, which are tiny (1 cm long or less) striped black and yellow wasps, known for chasing humans or animals 100m or further should their nests be disturbed. Will sting again and again in a frenzy until you run far enough that they lose interest.
Hornets, which are much larger (3cm or longer) striped black and yellow wasps. They are as aggressive as yellowjackets if not more so, and have more venom. They can and do kill birds and livestock that disturb their nests. And when I say "livestock," I mean up to and including cattle.
There are many other species, tending to be solid colored and either red or black, mostly resembling very large flying ants. They are somewhat less aggressive.
And then there are fire ants, but this trope seems to be about flying stinging insects that cause an instinctive reaction of fear.
