Nornagest: I could have sworn Jesus gets mentioned by someone at some point, although I don't think he ever appears in direct narration.

Solandra: IIRC, Jesus was mentioned in passing as being one of the better-off gods, though even he couldn't hitch a ride sometimes. Other than that, he doesn't play any part in the narrative.

  • Yep, JC and the Bud are big in America and Mr Wednesday's con was on the little gods.

HalcyonUmbra: Jesus was mentioned as doing very well in America (probably why he didn't participate in the battle), but as not even being able to hitch a ride in the middle east and those places.

Boxing J Fool: Where is it said that Shadow is baldr? I know Low Key makes an offhand reference to using holly (or misletoe, cant remember) but is that all the proof we have?

Jack Butler: He's the son of Odin, he brings peace after war, he affects the weather and makes people like him, he sacrifices himself for his father, and Neil Gaiman says so. Enough proof for you?

Boxing J Fool: that works. I'm not quite up on Norse Mythology, so I didn't pick up on context clues.

Shale: He also signs his name as "Baldur" (or Baldr, or Balder, I can't remember the spelling) in the sequel novella.

brokenwit: Could the Anvilicious argument be more or less, "This is Aboriginal land, other gods are only tolerated here?" (Before you ask, it's an old British term, and makes 5x more sense than Indian/Native American/First Peoples. Sometimes used in Canada to describe the Metis and the Inuits up north)

semiramis: Well, the indigenous "gods" we meet aren't really gods so much as culture heroes; I seem to remember there being a discussion about that? How America isn't good god-growing land. There were avocados at some point.

I never really got that vibe from the book. America is a place where you can easily forget the gods you bring with you. Note that some gods are doing very well thankyou very much and even Eostre thinks she's sitting pretty.

Meiriona: "this is a bad land for gods" and all that? I'm sure that Shadow's speech at the battle is pretty clear. Or do you mean the talk with Whiskey Jack?
