Madacaek: I haven't the slightest idea what happened just now, with the google ad thingy. o_O
Kizor: Does that quote work as is, or would it need some more context? Seth: Seems to work, i can't think of a better one that isn't from Kim Possible. Seth: When was this busted by Myth Busters? I remember an ep where they busted you could use suction cups or magnets to climb up a duct but nothing that says going through them period is impossible. Plus doesn't the alcatraz example make this Truth In Television, it cant be both. Silent Hunter: They proved it was possible, but that it was too noisy to be useful. Seth: Useful or not by their standards it worked didn't it? You know i bet the guys who actually escaped from prison found it far more useful than the guys from mythbusters :D Seanette: The Alcatraz escape involved stone walls, not ductwork made from sheets of metal, which I think (having seen both episodes) is the key difference. With the metal ducts, all methods tried were more than noisy enough to attract the attention of anyone nearby, thus the conclusion stated by Silent Hunter. The passages used by the prison escapees were not made of sheet metal (which is good for carrying sound), but were stone and/or concrete and a lot thicker, so would muffle sound much better. You're kind of mixing up apples and oranges here :-). Ununnilium: I really think the shorter version of the Ben10 example is more useful; you don't need to know how tiny he was or why he was super-smart, just that he was. Krid: The breakfast club entry is incorrect - he was crawling on ceiling tiles. MikeVP: The Spy Museum in Washington DC has a great "lampshade" of the ventilation duct trope -- They have a ventilation duct that you can walk through, which goes over some of the exhibits. Generally, it's full of kids, and it sounds like a wildebeast stampede though a boiler factory. |
