Literature / The Hundred Secret Senses

  • Asian Speekee Engrish: Even after years spent living in the states, Kwan still talks like this.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Kwan always takes care of her little sister, even when Olivia treats her like dirt.
  • Chinese Dialects and Accents: In her last life, Kwan spoke Hakka.
  • Foreign Queasine: Olivia thinks this about the chicken blood in the soup.
  • Engrish: Kwan's speech is littered with it.
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: Kwan's cooking is this to most people.
  • Land of Dragons: This is how Olivia pictures China until she actually goes there.
  • Medicate the Medium: Besides being clairvoyant, Kwan sees and interacts with ghosts. She calls this "yin eyes". She tells this to Olivia in confidence, and Olivia immediately tells her parents because Kwan's nighttime stories and behavior are terrifying her. Kwan is hospitalized and put through shock therapy, which doesn't stop the ghosts — instead, it lets in evil ones and makes her unable to stop talking about them. It also ruins her hair, for life. She never blames Olivia for this.
  • Past-Life Memories: Kwan claims to have these. Most people, including Olivia, write her off as crazy.
  • Red China: While not particularly evil, some jokes are made at the communist government's expense.
  • Reincarnation Romance: It turns out that this happens to Miss Banner and her lover Yiban. They come back as Olivia and Simon.
