The Smurfette Principle

Added DiffLines:

* TheSmurfettePrinciple: First, among the canine characters, females are much rarer than males. And among humans, not only women appear only a handful of time while most of the human characters are men. But Mercedes is the only named woman who appeared more than once and have a small role. And even with that, she only is a part of a ComicTrio who is present only during one chapter. Also, do not expect her to be a profound character, it's a novel written before WW1 by a male author, with all stereotypes about softness, physical weakness and oversensitiveness about the women at this time.

The Power of Love

Notably moving alone a sled with twenty fifty-pound sacks of flour on it, over 100 yards, while it was frozen to the ground by a temperature of -60°F. The chapter where this occured is even titled "For the Love of a Man".
--> Thornton knelt down by Buck's side. He took his head in his two hands and rested cheek on cheek. He did not playfully shake him, as was his wont, or murmur soft love curses; but he whispered in his ear. "As you love me, Buck. As you love me," was what he whispered. Buck whined with suppressed eagerness.

Karma Houdini

* HateSink: Even if, in this context, Buck was sent into a CrapsackWorld, at least everyone who wronged him had an understable reason to do so: protect their leader's place (Spitz) or their territory (the Yeehats), the necessity to litteraly move forward (almost every master Buck had), or even fighting directly or indirectly for their own survival... All, but the Man in a Red Sweater. Not only he is at the head of a dognapping network, but also he takes way too much pleasure to beat the stolen hounds into submission.

All, but the Man in a Red Sweater. Not only he is at the head of a dognapping network, but also he takes way too much pleasure to beat the stolen hounds into submission.

Added DiffLines:

* KarmaHoudini: For what we know, the Man in a Read Sweater never faced any consequence for ruling a dognapping network, and his business never was shut down.

Evil Poacher

Added DiffLines:

* EvilPoacher: A rare inversion of the trope, since even if most of the novel is set in the Wild, and almost everyone here hunt for meat, we never see an actual poacher. However, the first chapter features a network of dognappers who target domestic.

Worthless Yellow Rocks

Added DiffLines:

* WorthlessYellowRocks: Downplayed, neither the author nor the narrator question the interest of gold for humans. However, the story being written from Buck's point of view, a dog, for him gold is only a yellow metal for which he has no curiosity. Moreover, most of the time, the novel refers to the "yellow metal" rather than the term "gold".

Added example(s)

Added DiffLines:

*RiverOfInsanity: A variant occurs during the trip with Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. Despite leaving in good spirits, things get worse, and worse as the trio are woefully naive, prideful, immature, and inexperienced, and this combined with an already exhausted team of dogs, an under supply of food for them, and a massively overloaded sled they have to drag behind them is what eventually dooms them in the end. The farther, and farther they travel into the wilderness, the more the three's unity breaks down, and the more dogs die from being beaten, starved, and worked to death. It all eventually culminates in the entire group sans Buck perishing as the sled breaks through the ice, and drags them all into the freezing, rushing water below.
