- Why are modern jails in Western countries so... pleasant? On a tour, I noticed that the convicts had televisions, games, a large field to play in, etc. This is actually a step up of life quality for many. Some people even go to jail on purpose to improve their standard of living. These people are convicted criminals for crying out loud! What happened to those good old days when jails were hell on Earth? Those were much more effective in deterring criminals. A lot of people wouldn't be as quick to break the law if they knew that jail was like torture.
- Because "convicted criminal" doesn't mean "not human". Torturing people just to make an example of them is something The Empire does.

- Why don't we try to reduce our population problem by making many more crimes punishable by death? We'd get rid of a lot of unnecessary people who are just consuming resources in our jails if we were to make one rape or one intentional or attempted murder punishable by death.
- Because the legal system isn't perfect, and people get falsely accused of crimes often. Remember those college lacrosse players a year or so back? By your standards, they would be dead now.

- Since ALF has officially been declared a domestic terrorist group, why can't we just grab its very public leader, give him a life sentence or three, and toss him in a maximum security prison?
- Because the one thing worse than a bunch of terrorist, bomb-throwing dirty hippies is a bunch of terrorist, bomb-throwing dirty hippies ''that know you're after them? That really doesn't not strike me as a plan with great survival rates. See ACORN and similar; they're already making disruptive protests right next to your police, firefighters, and government officials; you really, really don't want them thinking "If I go down, I'm Taking You With Me."

TV Tropes Wiki JBM page: either we give this page some actual objective or we stop it. It really stopped being fun when we started discussing religion, let alone the rest... I think we jumped the shark at the "other anime girls" answer "Wait,
