Simple description: combine Voice of the Legion, More Teeth than the Osmond Family, Bloody Bowels of Hell, Foreboding Architecture, The Legions of Hell, and Physical Hell; add several ounces of Nightmare Fuel and Crapsack World; and this environment is the result. (This environment, and the whole story of Behind the World, was actually inspired by the storyline for the fan-made game Bare Knuckle IV, whose creator Matthew Drury is friends with and worked closely with to adapt that story for the final part of the saga. The fact that Drury acknowledges the Doom video-game series as one of his favorites aside from Streets of Rage itself may also have played a role.)
