When Kirra, who is rather thoughtless and has never been one for introspection, admits that she and Donnal will probably never marry because she doesn't want to put him in the position of feeling guilty for making Kirra the subject of gossip over their noble/peasant relationship.
"I think I own him, Senneth. I think there is nothing I could do to drive him away. That moves me and frightens me and makes me want to be very, very careful with his heart. So I will not put it on display in the drawing rooms of the Twelve Houses."
