- Vada's conversation with Thomas J's mother after his death.
Vada: Don't worry, I know he'll be alright. My mother will be looking out for him.She turns back, smiles and nods.
- Vada sadly confessing to Shelly that she stole money from her to pay for the writing class. Rather than getting mad, Shelly comforts her and tells her it's alright.
- When Vada freaks out about her first period, Shelly's right there to explain what's going on, give The Talk, and comfort a scared adolescent who hasn't even been all that pleasant toward her. They do develop a close relationship, and this is the start.
