The friendship Lester and 'Buddy' established after breaking out of the prison cell. The fact that they both put themselves on the line for each other (Lester shooting a ceiling prop to open a hatch for Buddy, who later finds Lester in a fire fight and drags him to the outdoors above for example) is heart warming enough, especially in the ending, where by then, Lester is barely alive, and Buddy arrives to carry him onto the dragon, flying off into the sunset.
