  • What is behind Mr. Weston's incongrous conundrum in prase of Emma's "perfection" immediately following her bad behaviour toward Miss Bates? Is he making a poorly-thought-out attempt to smooth over Emma's faux pas, or is he oblivious to Emma's faults the same way he is to Frank's, or too sanguine to immediately pick up on how cruel her comment was? (The other possibility is that it's a deliberately sarcastic response to her behaviour, but that would be too mean-spirited to be consistent with Mr. Weston's character so can probably be ruled out.)
    • Probably the latter two. He wants to set up Emma and Frank, so he's not going to notice her faults any more than his son's. And he can be a bit inattentive when he isn't the one speaking (witness his early conversation with Mrs. Elton, where he's clearly thinking of the next thing he's going to say instead of listening). It's also a very hot day where they're all a little stupefied, so it's plausible that Mr. Weston was be too busy thinking up his own witticism to attend very much to Emma's.
