  • I can get why Pendulum Summoning would be broken in the real world, considering all the archetypes out there that could abuse the crap out of the instant Special Summon thing, but by the standards of the various Yu-Gi-Oh! animes (ESPECIALLY after the brokenness that was Don Thousand) it's ridiculously tame, so how can the characters really consider Pendulum Summoning to be so OMGSUPERUNBEATABLE?
    • By most of those incredibly broken standards, they are often supernatural/unrevealed to the general public. This is likely why Pendulum Summoning is an issue, but it's more the case that only Yuya so far is capable of performing it.
    • Yep. There is a very short list of cards that have been used by multiple people, even after 1000 episodes, so people just rolled with it when they have never seen Elemental HERO Neos or ZW - Tornado Bringer before, but Yuya pushed it by creating his own card type, which is what made everyone call BS on him.
    • And in the case of Neos it actually was a legitimate card, it just got sent into space.
  • Yuya mentions having watched recordings of his duel, so how did it take him three hundred duels to replicate Pendulum Summoning? Did he not take the time to examine his cards? Or even just pay attention to the words he spoke (something to the effect of "Now I can summon any monster from Level 2 to 7!")? Is this just another case of Idiot Hero?
    • Notice that he replicates the conditions exactly as they were in his duel against Ishijima. It would take a fair number of duels to get the exact same hand (in many of them, he was likely testing other Pendulum Monsters, like Odd-Eyes and the Entermate ones) especially as, since it's off-screen, he won't have super drawing skills. Though the number is a little extreme. It's also likely that due to the odd nature of the Summon, he hasn't joined the dots when it comes to Scales and Levels (which, considering having something in between a number is a new concept for the game, is not that far-fetched.)
    • The experimenting thing might be a good explanation since episode 9 shows that he doesn't necessarily need the two Magician cards to make a Pendulum Summon.
    • Also it's later implied that his Superpowered Evil Side may have been in control at the time (Notice the summon chant used) and not normal Yuya.
    • He just watched the conditions he was when he pendulum summoned, but it's unlikely the camera was able to record the specific cards he used nor the places the cards needed to be put to be able to Pendulum Summon (notice that in his duel with Yuzu he tried to use other cards instead of the two Magicians and he also puts them in the wrong places).
      • The Pendulum Cards weren't set in the wrong places; both cards were in the Pendulum Zones. It also doesn't matter which card is on which zone, since the zones themselves don't influence the difference between two Scales.
      • Yet. That's only because Pendulum cards with 2 different pendulum scales haven't been shown or released yet. Only cards with one Pendulum scale (not counting effects) have appeared thus far.
  • Why did Sawatari's buddies make such a big deal about Xyz Summoning? They say that the class on it is one of the highest level in their schcool, but the rules for it are pretty simple, and everyone should at least know the basics.
    • Because they're morons? The Dark Duelist did say that their dueling (specifically Sawatari's) didn't have the "sharpness of a blade or the precision of a bullet".
  • For that matter why is Fusion Summoning a big deal? It's been part of the game since the games inception and is one of the most basic things in the game.
    • For both the above points, it's implied/stated that LDS have been hoarding the special summoning methods to themselves. Sora claims it's normal where he comes from, suggesting that his home might be beyond their reach for now.
    • Episode 127 confirms that Standard initially only had Tribute Summons, and implies that Leo reintroduced them.
  • Why wasn't Ritual Summoning given a course at LDS? Granted, Ritual monsters don't come from the Extra Deck, but they're a unique summoning method that's rarely seen.
    • Who knows? Given that they're also making a comeback in the OCG/TCG, they might appear later. Confirmed to do so.
    • Actually, if one looks at the poster where Yuya reads off the Summon courses in Episode 3, there's clearly a blue column next to the purple (Fusion), white (Synchro), and black (Xyz) columns, so they do have a Ritual course. The above-mentioned "not part of the Extra Deck" thing probably means it's just not as popular.
      • The blue column is not a Ritual course, but a composite course, which teaches other tactics and related theories about dueling. It does have Ritual Summoning as a minor subject, but the composite course does not focus on Ritual Summoning specifically.
  • Even if the You Show Duel School loses to LDS and the latter absorbs him, what makes them think that Yuya would just willingly tell them all the deets on Pendulum summoning? And unless they can get to mass-producing Pendulum cards instantly, it would be hard to teach about them when only one or two people can use them.
    • For that matter, what gives a duel school the authority to mass produce cards? We aren't talking about Industrial Illusions that created the game, this is just a school that can teach people how to duel. And if they can indeed mass produce them legally (say, having the rights to produce the cards, like having bought out I2) why do they need Yuya? Reiji already knows exactly how the cards work, and it's not like someone can have a patent on a type of summon (that we know of) so why not just make their own Pendulum Monsters if they have that option?
    • He'd probably be under contract to do so if LDS took over. Also note that Reiji has claimed to have a near-complete understanding of Pendulum Monsters now, possibly to the point that they can be mass-produced.
      • But what keeps Yuya from going "LOL I quit" and just leaving the school in general? I mean, it doesn't appear to be mandatory to attend a dueling school as Gongenzaka doesn't attend one, and they aren't competing over forcing Yuya to join the school, they're taking the school itself. I don't really see how Yuya is in any way inclined to remain with the school if he doesn't want to, and You-Show doesn't OWN pendulum summoning, Yuya is just the only person who has Pendulum Monsters. He could leave whenever he wants, or just quit right before the last guy loses, so the school still doesn't get pendulum summoning.
    • What I don't get is why isn't LDS being more diplomatic in their approach? I mean, they don't need the school or Yuya, as far as I can tell, they just need the rights. Why make a challenge you might not win when you could just offer Yuya a ton of money for the details on pendulum summoning? Even if he said no (which he probably would) they never even consider that approach. I mean, at least Kaiba offered to trade for the Blue-Eyes before he took it from Grandpa.
    • Himika did make an off-hand mention of wanting to punish Yuya for embarrassing her school.
    • A few things— LDS is only a part of the Leo Corporation. The Leo Corporation manufactures the new Duel Disks as well as the technology that creates Action Duels. Furthermore, it seems that cards need to be engineered as opposed to simply printed (for whatever reason), as implied by Reiji's slips of cardboard "malfunctioning" as well as V/Christopher Arclight creating RUM Argent Chaos Force "with science"— all of this would suggest Duel Monster cards require a great deal of R&D to produce, thus necessitating large companies such as Leo. Himika also explicitly stated that she wanted Leo to have a total global monopoly on duel schools— meaning LDS would be the only way to receive official Duel Monsters education (because you need that much information to understand a children's trading card game). Let's not forget that this is Yu-Gi-Oh!; such card games are not only Serious Business, but literally control the fate of not just the entire planet Earth, but also various alien worlds. The Leo Corporation having such power of Duel Monsters would certainly have its advantages to its CEOs. As it stands, it's probably safe to assume that the size, scale, and influence of Leo grants it N.G.O. Superpower status— governments probably cannot take it down without resorting to quirky kids with trinkets and a love of Duel Monsters and The Power of Friendship.
      • I feel the need to point out that in the case of both the LDS Pendulum Monsters and Argent Chaos Force, those trying to create them have no existing material and don't always have all the facts. Even Yuya didn't know how they worked, and Reiji likely had a hell of a time getting the card data properly worked out.
      • As to making the cards, they likely have a chip in them with the relevant data & scripts, meaning each card needs to contain data on its stats, effects, summoning conditions, and everything of the sort. (Which also explains how they even worked in the first place, since Yuya's duel disk was just reading data from his cards, although that raises the question of whether Zarc is a programmer.) So, without the proper scripting, the cards could easily malfunction. It's likely that LDS just wanted to read the data from Yuya's cards, so they could fix the bugs in their Pendulum script.
  • Why are children (or anyone for that matter), even allowed to play in Action Duels? Depending on where you are when something happens to one of your monsters (as seen in several episodes), either player could be seriously injured or even killed. 5D's turbo dueling required heavy licensing and safety regulations, yet Action Duels require nothing.
    • Remember that this was due to those dealing the injuries being a massive jerkass (though that begs the question of why Shuzo didn't complain. Himika likely didn't, well, because evil.) Turbo Dueling is also at far faster speeds and requires the operation of a vehicle. Also note that Action Duels can only occur in certain locations, and this is likely the very reason Duel Schools exist - so that the graduates can Action Duel legally. Most Action Fields probably aren't as dangerous as Dark Town either. On top of that, I wouldn't be surprised if there were safety protocols. Then again, considering who invented it, I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't, either.
    • Episode 27 reveals that Fields with soft surfaces are chosen for young players, at least in official tournaments.
    • Yet, teenagers from 12 to 15 can duel on dangerous fields. Yuzu vs Masumi in episode 29 is a prime example.
      • There are probably safety features built into there as well, such as monsters saving people from falling, like we've seen the Gazer Magicians and Bloom Diva do.
  • So, is the black hole Overlay Network the new default? because in Zexal, that was only supposed to be for the Numbers and other plot-important Xyz monsters; everyone else had a red swirl.
    • Yes, it's the new default. I doubt the Numbers will ever appear but I guess they thought that overlay network looked so cool, they'll just make it for every Xyz in the show now. Also fridge brilliance when you read that Xyzs are made form anti-matter.
    • Not really anything Fridge, because, well... Artistic License – Space.
  • Before they became Pendulum Monsters, Why did Yuya have the original Magicians in his deck? They didn't fit his deck theme. Were they given to him by his father or something?
    • That's the current theory, yes. In the opening, you can see Yusho standing next to a monster that looks like a stage magician, with marking similar to Odd-Eyes Dragon. All three cards may have been given to Yuya by him.
    • Magicians can be in circuses and can fit the fun theme.
      • Though his magicians aren't circus-themed; the relation is shallow at best.
    • While the Entermate/Performapal cards are circus-themed, keep in mind that Yuya wants to entertain people with his dueling. Both circus and stage magicians would fit into the "entertainment" category.
    • Given information revealed in later episodes, this may be due to Zarc's influence.
  • Why are so many cards in this series given different effects, and often somewhat more restrictive effects. Battleguard King only being able to use his effects with Battleguards as opposed to more general warriors, the Level 5 or higher restriction of Odd Eyes and Dark Rebellion Dragons, etc etc?
    • Probably to make them less over-powered.
    • Yeah, but that's normally done when they are made into real cards. It's odd to have the in show cards weaker than the real cards
    • Well, look at this. If Odd-Eyes had its real effect, it would have wiped out Sora in one attack. Hardly entertaining, is it?
  • How Yuzu is going to use Fusion, anyway? If some of the theories around are true and LDS monopolizes the advanced ways of summoning, how Yuzu is gonna get her hands in Fusion cards and Fusion material monsters? Sora only agreed to teach her how Fusion works, and maybe he'll let her use his cards while training, but soon she'll be in need of her own cards to built her own deck, which would be quite the challenge.
    • Several possibilities. She and Sora could break into LDS, Sora could somehow be able to create cards, her bracelet creates the fusion cards, a hidden card vault, a card designer defects to them.....etc etc.
    • In the same way any self-respecting duelist would do: cheating. Make a new card mid-duel. It's a series staple at this point.
    • As of episode 18, she suddenly has a Fusion Monster that fits exactly with her "Fantasia" deck theme. No explanation is given how.
    • It's been very well established since the 1st series that a fusion summon can be conducted with simply polymerization and the cards required, and the rest occurs for itself. That's why you never see the fusion monsters in an extra deck outside of the duel. Yes, that only makes sense with the holographic imagers and not in the actual card games, but that's how the show works.
      • Except this was only in Duelist Kingdom, the time before the anime card game had rules.
    • It could be because Sora broke into the LDS and stole the fusion cards for her, in a later episode he says something about the "Security being tighter" implying that he broke in before hand.
    • Another possibility: her archetype has always included Fusion monsters since the beginning, she just never learned how to use them until now.
  • Why don't more people just pack monster removal cards when battling with Yuya? As it stands now, most of his cards aren't Pendulum Monsters yet, so they wouldn't just go to the Extra Deck. If someone could use, say, Raigeki Break, he'd have a smaller hand size and less monsters, which would seriously disturb the use of Pendulum Summoning. Considering we have LDS students who can flood the field with powerful monsters, they would only have to worry about Spell and Trap cards.
    • A couple of reasons. For one thing, Raigeki Break shrinks the users hand, not Yuya's. At the same time, Pendulum Monsters are new. People have not yet managed to come up with strategies against them. Arguably the only one who has a deck set up to counter them is Sawatari with his Mobius Cards.
    • "Where are all of the cards that destroy monsters without battle" is pretty much an eternal question in regards to the Yu-Gi-Oh anime.
    • Hilarious in Hindsight: This is exactly what Michio's deck does to Yuya.
  • In Episode 16, Michio attacks Whip Viper with the 2200/1000 Royal Cookmate Prince Curry. Why the hell did Yuya not use Whip Viper's quick effect to switch Prince Curry's ATK and DEF?
    • Its effect is different in the anime, it doesn't work on the opponent's turn.
  • Why wasn't the Duel Disk able to recognize that Yuzu put a Fusion Monster in the Main Deck?
    • Rule of Funny? Perhaps even though the Duel Disks are automated they might have a simple design in them, similar to Dueling Programs in Real Life. You put cards in and the Disk follows the logical progression of the program in the cards regardless of what's in the deck. Like the Real Life Dueling Programs, even if you put in a mismatched card, it will not warn you (unless it's banned or something).
    • Duel Disks are card readers and hologram projectors, which is why they don't have issues with new cards, since they just follow the instructions programmed into them. And Dueling software in Real Life (such as Dueling Network) doesn't allow you to put Extra Deck cards in the Main Deck, or vice versa. Rule of Funny does explain it though, albeit making it appear poorly in execution.
    • In regards to this, note that the Duel Disk may not read the cards in the deck as it has in earlier series. It wouldn't know the fusion monster was in there until she tried to play it from her hand.
    • It does seem to read cards in the Extra Deck, though, considering that when an Extra Deck summon is performed it pops open and delivers the necessary card. Lacking that system in the main deck seems a bit backwards.
    • Computer programs operate in somewhat specific ways and don't handle deviations all that well. It's actually not that unexpected that such an little problem could mess it up.
    • Apparently, that was a bug/feature kept from the first generation. Joey put Giltia the Dark Knight in his Main Deck, and when he tried to play it, he received an error message (this was attributed to it being Level 5 normal summoned without a tribute, but it's also an illegal summoning of a fusion monster). Apparently, the Duel Disk will not prevent you from placing a card of the wrong type in your deck, but should you attempt to play a card illegally, it will trigger an error and either send that card to the graveyard or remove it from play. It also appears that a player attempting to summon a monster illegally loses his/her normal summon for the turn.
      • Except that Giltia wasn't a fusion monster in the anime, it was a normal monster. So was Flame Swordsman for that matter. The only thing he did wrong in that case was a lack of tribute summoning.
  • With 4Kids gone bankrupt and the Saturday morning cartoon (at least the non satellite TV kind) going down the toilet, what company will dub Arc V? And, possibly more importantly, who will show it it?
    • Konami's 4KMedia Inc. (4Kids Productions Inc. acquired by Konami) has licensed the series. A dub is expected to air in 2015. Though where, is still unknown.
  • To qualify for the Junior Youth Championship, you need at least a 60% win rate in 50 duels or 6 straight wins. Yuya already had six straight wins (Sawatari, Sora, Hokuto, Reiji, Shuzo, and Michio), so why did most of the qualifying arc hinge on Yuya changing his win rate? If he lost somewhere between those matches, we'd be told (considering Yuya's pessimistic attitude, and how people see Pendulum as nigh-unbeatable, this would be a big thing). There's no evidence he lost matches between them, anyway.
    • It's official matches. A random match with Sora, for example, doesn't count.
    • Yuya's duel with Reiji was cancelled half way through due to extenuating circumstances. Reiji hadn't run out of Life Points so it's questionable whether Yuya won that one.
      • Reiji specifically gave Yuya the win for that one.
  • Is Reira a boy or a girl? Subs say "she" and Reira is usually a girl name, but -kun is usually used as male honorific, plus Reira has a boyish face.
    • He's a boy, he fits into the sibling category in the same vein as Mokuba or Haruto. While Ruri fits into the sister archetype like Shizuka or Rio.
      • Actually, later in the anime it's confirmed that Reira is a girl.
  • Why is this season demonizing Fusion Summon? It's probably the most harmless looking Special summon of all (Ritual Summon looks like a sacrifice, and Synchro Summon almost destroyed the world once). Hell, even Tribute summon form of Normal Summoning looks more vicious.
    • It's the oldest form of Extra deck special summoning, so... Old Media Are Evil ? (I'm kidding. Yuto and Kurosaki probably just reacted poorly to someone who looks like the girl they're trying to protect using the same technique their enemy uses. In other words, coincidence. Kurosaki will learn this sooner or later, most likely.)
      • Same editor as above here. This actually might be a bit of a pun on their part: the guy on the motorcycle is called "Yugo" which is the Japanese name for Polymerization. Yugo used Synchro summoning, though, but it's still a neat detail if it's intentional.
    • 1. Only Yuto and Kurosaki are the ones who demonize Fusion Summons, not the whole season or any other character (It was the first Extra Deck special summon to be shown in the series). 2. The enemies who use Fusions were the ones who took their comrade (Ruri) so they're definitely on the top of their hit list (If a Synchro Faction exists, like with the White Rider, they'll not be the top priority, but still an enemy) and 3. Their talk about "Your sister would never use Fusions" was more to clear out the fact Yuzu isn't Ruri. So in short, no, the only characters who demonize them are the one who have a good reason to be against them. Hell, there are more characters that use Fusions than Synchros (as of the time of this writing)!
    • It's not really demonizing Fusions when two of the main characters are praised for using it. As for the "more vicious" summoning animations, it's just Rule of Cool and Animation Marches On, if you will.
    • Sora's behavior might have answered your questions.
  • If the advanced summoning methods (Fusion, Synchro, Xyz) are supposed to be LDS exclusive, why can everyone and their mother suddenly use Fusion?
    • LDS in general tend to be Smug Snakes, they are trying to monopolize them, but it obviously isn't working.
      • It is more likely that they have courses and more cards on special ways to do Fusion Summon and when to use them. If you notice in both of Yuzu's duels, her opponent doesn't use a Polymerization card, the surebet for Fusion.
      • Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonists have the innate ability to pull cards out of their ass when the plot wants them to. In Yuya's case, it's mid-duel; in Yuzu's, it's off-screen.
      • It's also possible that Yuzu could get the Fusion monsters, but not the Fusion related cards. Sora likely had to give her a fair few cards. Presumably in Gongenzaka's case, he got his cards from Yaiba.
    • Simple. Because they aren't exclusive to LDS. Just most duelists who use these kind of Summonings are from LDS.
  • How could Yuya ride on his Discover/Hip Hippo during his duel with the four thugs in episode 30? They were outside of the stadium and were in a forest, so it cannot be an Action Duel. The field didn't even change. And the Solid Vision for Action Duels can only used on special arenas that provide the solid holograms.
  • If the LDS machine thing could detect Yuya's Pendulum Fusion during his duel with Sawatari, and judging by their reactions, it was the first they saw of it, why didn't the machine detect it when Yuya did it against Gongenzaka?
    • It was on LDS's turf as opposed to at another duel school?
    • Maybe they weren't watching him for the time since they were dealing with the more pressing matter of LDS members being attacked.
  • Why does Yuya have Entermate Trump Witch if he hadn't an Extra Deck before? Since it's a Pendulum Card, it was in Yuya's deck during his match with Ishijima, and she had probably a similar effect back then. In that case, she would be useless, but why did Yuya include her in his deck?
    • The glow Trump Witch had when Yuya drew her might have something to do with it. It could be that Yuya created Trump Witch when he made Rune-Eyes in Mieru's duel or when he drew her during Gongenzaka's duel. Of course, Yuya doesn't seem to think of it oddly, similar to when he made Rune-Eyes. Speculations say that Yuya has a split personality but its subtle and subconscious. Which is why he isn't finding the cards he's suddenly making odd. Alternatively, Trump Witch might have had a different effect before she was made a Pendulum. Timegazer Magician's monster effect was different when he was a regular effect monster (Which was to prevent a Spell and Trap on your field from being destroyed as opposed to when he became a Pendulum, prevents Pendulums in the Zones from being targeted by effects).
  • When Sora applied to You Show Duel School, why didn't anybody ask about his parents?
    • He could have just claimed Parental Abandonment. Wouldn't be anything too unusual for the series, considering how half the characters are down a parent.
    • Considering The Reveal about Sora... who knows where his parents actually are?
    • In episode 35, Yuya and Yuzu said they did ask about Sora's past a few times, but he would always dodge the question, so they stopped asking him.
  • Why is the Xyz section hated so much? We know the Fusion section hunted them down and it seems the Synchro section later joined the "fun" based on Yugo.
    • Who knows? Maybe it is meta-commentary? Perhaps it was just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time? Perhaps the show is catering to Americans, who dislike ZEXAL (which introduced it)? Hard to say really, let's wait a few episodes to find out.
    • Considering whether Yugo is a Synchro user or not. His name doesn't speak for it.
      • Well, the second opening seems to confirm that his dragon is a Synchro Monster.
    • The Synchro faction may have some deeper reason for attacking Xyz users than Academia does.
      • Recent evidence seems to suggest that it's just the Fusion Dimension (more specifically, Academia) that are the haters. Judging by Yugo's comments, they seem to have attacked the Synchro Dimension as well, while the only reason that Yugo is associated with the Fusion Dimension is because they didn't realize that his name was Yugo. So it's just that only Xyz have been shown so far, the only person from Synchro is Yugo, who's appeared in capacity to give answers once. Heck, when Serena is complaining about not being able to fight, she wants to destroy both Xyz and Synchro.
  • Seriously, how does Kachidoki get away with physically attacking his opponents? That is assault by any definition.
    • Evidently, in Action Duels, players are allowed to perform direct attacks on one another at any point during the duel...
  • Was there any reason for Yuya to return his Magicians to his Deck with Mad Hurricane in Ep. 39? Pendulum Summon doesn't force you to Summon every monster you can with the set Scales, and the two Magicians (Scales 1 and 8) could've easily got the monsters needed for Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon.
    • The two monsters in the Pendulum Scale were Trump Witch (Scale 4) and Timegazer Magician (Scale 8). Yuya couldn't have summoned any level 4 monsters for Dark Rebellion with those scales.
      • *looks again* Oopsies. How did I forget that?
  • Why exactly was the way Yuya won in episode 39 so 'bad'? I mean, sure, everything got oddly dark there for a second, but is Yuya defeating a guy with a one hit KO really that bad?
    • That bugged me, too. Okay, so Yuya got pissed and decided to stop screwing around and beat the guy. Considering the crap Kachidoki puts his opponents through, Yuya being angry by his own will or through Berserk Mode is completely justified. Not to mention Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon didn't actually strike Kachidoki, whereas Kachidoki kept beating the crap out of Yuya through the whole Duel. I can understand his friends being disappointed in him (stuff like this doesn't match Yuya), but at least a good portion of the audience should've been cheering out of pure joy of seeing Kachidoki being the victim for once.
      • Because it was completely unexpected. The audience in the show only knows what they have been shown from three things. His duel with Ishijima, his opening speech, and his first duel in the tournament. Him acting like a completely different person (like Sora did in his duel) is creepy and frightening. He also went overkill on purpose. Yuya could have kept his overlay unit and still won the duel.
      • Actually, overkill was necessary in this duel. If he had only used one overlay unit, Kachidoki would have had 1500 life points left after he attacked.
      • No it wasn't. Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon has a normal attack of 2500. The bulk of level 4 cards (and under) tend to reach 2000 attack at most. In order to do anything he would need something to wipe Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon off the field along with the Pendelum cards and do the 100 LP damage, since Yuya could simply resummon it with new Overlay units due to the extra deck rule. What that means is he would have needed a 2600 five star monster or a way to power one up to that again. Since Dark Rebellion's monster effect is an ignition type he had no reason to fear the Xyz effect. Basically what this amounts to is Yuya over-killing just because he could, since Kachidoki was out of moves beyond an Action card that could summon monsters or do direct damage.
      • And what would have happened after that? His deck is meant to be a brutal beatdown deck, even without him doing the beating. Leaving it alive after that would have been a foolish gamble.
      • The math is off here. Idaten was at 3600 ATK, Dark Rebellion starts at 2500. First overlay unit and Idaten was at 1800, the dragon at 4300. IF Yuya attacked right then and there, Kachidoki would have been left with 2500 life points. So it was either go overkill using the second overlay unit (Idaten at 900 and DR at 5200) or letting Kachidoki have another turn with four cards to work with after his draw phase. It was brutal, only possible because of Dark Rebellion's anime effect, but that was the only winning move to take. I'd go into a prediction of what would happen if Kachidoki had another turn and another monster to summon that could be used to beat the then-2500 atk dragon, but I think I've said enough. Though that sequence would probably be both awesome and terrifying, as well as hammer harder just how dark Yuya's dark side is.
      • FYI, 4300 - 1800 = 2500. Therefore, Kachidoki would have been left with 1500 life points.
    • Agreed with the person who said it was because it was unexpected. Yuya, up until now, was all about sunshine and sparkles and bringing smiles to his opponents. Suddenly the sky goes dark (convenient rain, but setting up a creepy atmosphere), Yuya's eyes glow and he's speaking in a monotone voice before pulling out a new, black monster dragon that isn't cute (like the Performapals) or well-known (his Odd-Eyes.) The eye glowing alone would be off-putting enough.
  • How did Kachidoki not know Level-based effects don't work on Xyz monsters? It is said that he finished second place in the previous year's tournament. The winner of that tournament was Yuu Sakuragi, who runs an Xyz deck.
    • Perhaps his deck simply doesn't use Level-based cards (Like Gravity Bind, Burden of the Mighty, etc) before this tournament.
    • The thing is that LDS monopolized all Special Summoning methods to itself, so a lot people are not familiar with certain types of cards. The Ryozanpaku Duel School seems to be focused only on Fusion Summoning (and beating the crap out of people), so they don't have much knowledge of Xyz Monsters in the first place. Also, we don't know how Sakuragi could defeat Kachidoki's brutal dueling style. We don't even know whether Kachidoki ever got the chance to summon Idaten or not.
    • Assuming they both used the same archetype they used in the present, Sakuragi runs Prophecy and while the archetype has two Xyz monsters, it doesn't focus on bringing them out like Constellars, or Tellarknights. So it's entirely possible that he won without Xyz summoning.
      • My first time posting on tvtropes I hope I this formatted correctly, but it was stated back in episode 8 by Shuzou that LDS only recently started teaching Xyz summoning, so it might be akin to how in real life, some players are still learning about the new mechanics. This could also explain why they Xyz (Chaos) Change (which my friends and I call going Pleiades into M7) exists but not rank up magic sense that came out later.
    • It was mentioned that he hadn't used Fusions in the previous tournament, so he would have not had that interaction.
  • Why Yuto knocked out Kurosaki in Episode 21? Saying to your best friend "Hey, this lass is not your sister?" was not enough?
    • Kurosaki would have probably stirred up more trouble anyways; it'd be best to remove him entirely from the situation until he can cool off.
  • "Awakening of the Imperial Wrath", the title of episode 39. Usually, Japanese Titles are very straightforward (Catch this Pokemon, draw this card, summon this archetype), but that title...makes no sense whatsoever.
    • It may be because of Yuya's Superpowered Evil Side (the name "Berserk Mode" is floating around for this) awakening, him Summoning Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, and beating down Kachidoki. "Imperial Wrath" (逆鱗 Gekirin) appears in the idiom "逆鱗に触れる" (gekirin ni fureru), which translates as "to infuriate one's superior"; Yuya is indeed superior to Kachidoki, and when Kachidoki's beatings awakened his Berserk Mode, he proved it with a pissed-off look on his face. "Gekirin" has another meaning that relates to Dark Rebellion, too: It literally means "reverse scale", and it usually refers to a dragon scale growing in the opposite direction, which will infuriate the dragon if touched, once again linking to the Berserk Mode, and possibly to Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon's own anger at its owner vanishing.
    • It's also a Call-Back, as Gekirin/Imperial Wrath was used in the title of the episode Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon first appeared in, Episode 7.
  • Is LDS hoarding the Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Summoning methods Fanon or Canon? Kachidoki Fusion Summoning made me wonder about how we all seem to take for granted that LDS has been doing so.
    • It's canon, but those Summoning methods are not exclusive to LDS. It tries to monopolize them for itself, but there are still a couple of schools who have access of those Summoning methods. However, most of duelists who use Fusion, Synchro and Xyz are from LDS, and LDS is the only school so far who teaches all three of them. Ryozanpaku Duel School seems only to have access of Fusions, but their lack of knowledge regarding Xyz Monsters makes them inferior to LDS, anyway.
  • Mr. Barrett lost an eye to "Widespread Ruin's" card... How??? I'm not questioning the power of cards in their hypothetical world. But Widespread ruins destroys only attacking monsters, it has no effect that can damage life points.
    • Take a look at the Japanese name: "All-Purpose Landmine Claymore." In case you weren't aware of that reference...
      • Holy cow, that's hardcore! Wait, does that mean... the other men who were with him, were they killed off for real?!
      • I wouldn't be too surprised - Yu-Gi-Oh! (mostly in the original language) is usually like that.
  • Barrett, for a Shell-Shocked Veteran, made a huge misplay. Reiji was at 3200 LP, and had a monster with 2000 ATK on the field. Barrett had beastborg Panther, which, due to his medal, was also at 2000. So far, so good. Then, he raised his attack again, which left Reiji clinging to life (when he eventually won). What he could have done was have Panther and Temujin destroy each other... and, due to Panther's effect, he would get back both Dark Sentinel and Panther Warrior, totaling 3500 damage. He totally could have won on that turn.
    • Dumb, but it makes sense in a way. Barrett has more than likely lost friends and comrades, and the idea of sacrificing one, i.e. his monster may have been out of question for him.
    • Panther Warrior needs a tribute to attack. Don't know about Dark Sentinel though.
    • It's likely that Panther Predator might have an effect to prevent that for balance.
  • If Entermage Trapeze Wizard could negate Bloom Diva's effect damage, as Dennis exploited, why didn't Yuzu activate the effect to avoid losing to her own monster's effect?
    • Simple. Trick Box negated Trapeze Wizard's effect.
  • Okay, Ep. 45, you gave us a big one. Dennis is from the Xyz Summon Course, right? Then why does he have freaking Polymerization in his Deck?
    • There are many theories about it. You can simply look them up on the Wild Mass Guessing page.
    • A more simple answer is the sheer fact that Xyz decks do lend to other summoning methods, due to not needlessly bloating your deck. A good example of this is the recent Cyber Dragon structure deck from 2014. Getting your Cyber Dragon Nova allows for easier summoning of your Cyber Dragon based fusions (via its destruction due to card effect or by being able to pull Cyber Dragons out of the graveyard.)
    • Or since he's an Exchange Student he's also studied Fusion Summoning.
    • Turns out he's apparently working with Yuri, who's from the Fusion Dimension.
  • If you get a 2000 life point penalty for interfering with a duel, why didn't Yugo get penalised when he defeated the Obelisk Force duelists and saved Sakuragi?
    • Probably because Yugo uses a different Duel Disk and he does not use the Leo Corporation system.
    • Or he did, it just didn't show it.
  • On the note of the Youth Division Lancers, why didn't any of them use Pendulum cards? Did Reiji simply neglect to give them any?
    • Maybe he did. It might be that they either actually did play the Pendulum Cards, but they ended up destroyed or they never drew them during the duels.
  • Why did Reiji keep the 2000 Life Points penalty when he knows there are invaders have infiltrated the tournament? Seriously, Michio and Teppei wouldn't have lost so quickly if they had the usual 4000 Life Points.
    • The whole "Use a Battle Royale to hide the invasion" plan has glaring flaws (mismatched decks, no idea how long will it take, not to mention the whole issue about explaining the disappearance of several teenagers), it just came back to bite them to have the tournament rules on the Duel Disks by that point and it was too slow to remove them.
    • Common fanon interpretation is he left it in as a test so only the best of the best (those who could still win despite their massive disadvantage) would be left to become the Lancers. Granted, it's still a massive Jerkass move considering how many ended up paying because of this, but Reiji has shown to be an 'end justifies the means' kind of guy from what we've seen so far.
    • I'm of the opinion that it's not so much a tournament feature as it is a standard feature for all Duel Disks.
      • As proven by Sergey's interruption that seems to be the case.
      • There's also a fan theory that duel discs not owned by Lancers will be affected as long as action field (in this case, Cross-Over) is activated, although this was jossed after Episode 130 showed Kaito and Edo getting intrusion penalty without action field.
  • How did one of the Youth Division Lancers manage to summon Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth in episode 47? That monster is notoriously difficult to summon.
    • Perhaps the deck was tailored to it: with Pyro Clock of Destiny to speed up the countdown. Plus, there were 8 Lancers at the start, give or take. There were 3 by the time Yugo popped up. That duel was probably lengthy.
    • It's possible that he used "A Wild Monster Appears."
      • Then the monster would have been destroyed. But it was still there.
      • Actually it would have been returned to the Deck, and a lesser known card called G.B.Hunter could prevent that if it was on the field at the return action's trigger.
    • Anime-only cards. Possibly including an improved version of Cocoon of Evolution.
      • I think the real question is, what is an LDS student good enough to be chosen for the proto-Lancers doing wasting his time on Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth.
    • The OCG finally has two answers; Parasite Paranoid and Super Cocoon of Evolution.
  • Minor point, but it still bugs me. In episode 34, Hokuto/Dipper said he didn't know how to do an Xyz Rank Up Summon. But, back in episode 9, he did "rank up" Constellar Pleiades into Constellar Ptolemy M7.
    • Watching that episode again, Hokuto did not refer to that as a Rank-Up Xyz Change. Presumable, it's different since it was based on Ptolemy's ability and did not explicitly state that it was a Rank-Up rather than a normal Xyz summon.
  • Nearing the end of episode 55 why and how did Sector Security mistake Yuya and Selena for Yugo and Yuzu? Since the two latters have mug shots wouldn't the difference in hair and EYE colour as well as how their voices sound make them stop and think for a while?
    • They're just doing the same thing everyone else did. Confusing Yuya and Yuzu and their counterparts with each other. At this point, we should just invoke Bellisario's Maxim and not let it get to us.
    • When they saw Yuya and Serena, they remarked something like, "The fugitives have changed their clothes." so they probably assumed Yugo and Yuzu were trying to disguise themselves.
    • Additionally, Yugo's helmet does obscure his hair in the mugshot.
    • It's possible that the characters don't really have those hair and eye colours, only the hairstyles, and that said colours are there for the audience's clarification only. Even characters who know one counterpart intimately struggle to tell a new one apart, and they'd know the colour difference very well. If all Yuus actually had matching coloration, as did all Yuzus, how quickly would you be able to tell the difference?
  • Did they ever explain why Yuto and Kurosaki's cards do actual damage? Earlier on, I could see as a joke about how in preceding series, the holograms somehow manage to do damage. However, especially with ability to control the hardlight systems, this ability seems to have carried on throughout the series. (I forgot if Sora's cards have ever done damage but at the least most of the time, it doesn't do damage as seen in his earlier duels. So it can't be a dimensional thing)
    • It seems to be weaponized Solid Vision (the tech behind Action Duels), and Sora's Duel Disk seemed like one of Standard's before the reveal, but it most likely just looks like one, since it hit Yuto hard enough to send him against a concrete wall and crack it. It's only a guess, but Academia made the technology, and the Resistance swiped and reverse engineered it in order to fight back, now, how Yugo managed to send Yuto to (at least) Intensive Care.
  • People seem to be trading cards for non-card goods a lot in the Facility. Where are they getting them from? They seem to mostly give away their Synchro monsters, which they should only have 15 of. And, if not, then it's still a finite number.
    • Gongenzaka's lackeys lost their decks after a duel before they got arrested, so there must be more than one deck per capita on those who expect getting arrested.
  • Is anyone else curious why we have not yet seen a chaos summon yet? (Chaos Sorcerer, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, or newer ones like Darkflare Dragon or Lightpulsar Dragon? I know the Chaos Emperor is banned in the TCG, but BLS-EOTB is not, neither is Sorc. For a summon and deck type that have stood the test of time, and as strong as they are (and is one of the most commonly known decks regardless of age (Yatalock)), why doesn't anyone use them? We got a freeze frame bonus in episode 1, with Chaos Sorcerer (same scene with Gem-Knights, X-Sabers, and Constellars).
    • Chaos summoning isn't an actual summoning method like Pendulum or Synchro, merely a special summon used by a series of cards. Not to mention that there is (sadly) no Chaos Dimension, so the writers probably don't see it important to bring up an old series when it's not relevant to the plot, even if it is powerful. But if it helps, the Black Luster Soldier series is becoming a full archetype, complete with allusions and references to Chaos summoning. They'll likely be used by Yugi in the DM movie coming out, so we'll see them in some form.
  • Jack Atlas is considered to be a bad guy who sold his soul to the tops despite giving his fan a "weak" card. The fan in question misinterpret it as him being weak despite the card is a tuner which usually have powerful effects to get a Synchro Summon out. Is everyone in the Synchro Dimension shallow or something?
    • Maybe he's illiterate and can't read the card's effects?
    • Looking down on weak cards isn't new to Yu-Gi-Oh. You have someone like that at least once a series.
    • It's also possible he knows the effects, but since he's still a young kid and not too well-versed in the game, mistook its effect for being unhelpful.
    • Quoted from the wiki "If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can take 400 damage, and if you do, your opponent gains 400 LP." Not a very useful effect unless you got something else that reverses the damage you inflict on yourself and/or the gain your opponent takes.
      • Not to mention it's a 0/0 monster too. There's only very specific uses for this card, A) You have enough lifepoints that the 400 LP cost doesn't matter. B) It's your only tuner card. C) You need to manipulate LP's like Yuya did that one duel. Or D) You need a spellcaster tuner for a Synchro monster. Like how Superheavy Warlord Susuano-wo needs a Superheavy monster and tuner normally
  • Since that boy mentioned he's a Commons working for the Tops, a thought occurs to me. How many other characters we assumed were Tops are actually Commons? Melissa Claire comes to mind. I also can't picture the extravagant Tops working in Security unless they're the highest ranked person in the organisation, like Roget.
    • Remember, just because they're tops doesn't mean they're all super rich. 100,000 people all being super rich in one city is a little hard to swallow. We can assume security is basically some of the more poor tops members, while Melissa probably does this because she enjoys it.
      • OP here, ok, in episode 70, the former duel chaser mentioned he was reduced to Commons after his lost to Yugo. That certainly complicates our understanding of the Tops-Commons dynamic.
  • Okay, I simply forgot this... But does Yuya know that Kurosaki and Serena carded people? Because if he does, I find it hard to swallow that he wouldn't be absolutely LIVID to know that he is working with horrible people. Also, he would have another well justified reason to hate Reiji, who not only knows about this, but has done NOTHING about it, but promote the two to saviours of his world.
  • Ok, so if some of the Lancers have Pendulum Cards why would Reiji not insist that all of them have some? Since Tsukikage doesn't appear to have them.
    • He may have some, but we haven't seen him use them. He only showed three monsters so far.
    • They all probably do, and as the person above me said, he might not have used them. And for what it's worth, his VA confirmed on Twitter that he lost his match on purpose.
  • Something that has bothered me since the beginning of the Synchro Arc... why didn't the Commons rise up against the Tops already? The Tops may control 99% of the wealth, but they are only 1% of the population. The Commons may be poor, but it is impossible for them to not have access to blunt and bladed implements like hammers, frying pans, knives and other tools. And the Tops are, as mentioned, outnumbered 99 to 1.
    • Two possible reasons. 1), The Tops can use hard vision, and should be able to use them to attack people. They're cards are easily better then almost everyone else's. Or, 2), The tops have far superior weaponry. Hammers, frying pans, and knives are effective, but I believe helicopters with machine guns are more deadly. Even if the commons win, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of commons will die before they win.
    • There's also the fact that the Tops give them Bread and Circuses to keep them appeased - the Friendship Cup gives people hope of being part of Tops, and as shown by the treatment of losers, City is a hyper-competitive society where winning is everything. I'd imagine at least part of it is the Commons themselves being divided - Crow for instance would probably be against a revolt because if it fails, the Tops would punish Commons and make things worse, and as mentioned even if they win, the death toll would be immense, and Shinji himself seems to need to prove he can actually beat Tops to incite the revolution he wants, which suggests a lot of Commons are hesitant about doing anything which would bring down the wrath of Security.
    • Roget later comments that having a yell seems to be enough for the Commons most of the time. AKA, all bark and no bite, which is exactly why they've been oppressed for so long.
  • OK, here's what's bothering me... Yuya has good reasons to hate Reiji, but why is it that he doesn't hate Kurosaki or Serena; two people who have done some pretty terrible things themselves with the latter of the two attacking innocent duelists by random because she was too lazy to bother finding out who she should actually be targeting which makes the whole "not being aware of what the Fusion Dimension was really like" argument not justifying her easily avoidable actions? He also didn't seem to hate Sora when he gleefully revealed he hunted Xyz Dimension inhabitants and took part in a war which causing alot of destruction and pain for fun without the slightest bit of remorse.
    • For Serena, it makes sense. As you said, she was mislead by her actions. But she was also willing to repent and help him out after learning the truth, showing that she is making an effort. We could also assume it might be because she looks like Yuzu.
      • Also to reply to OP about Serena attacking random innocent people. Keep in mind she entered Standard after she heard from Sora that there are Xyz remnants still in the Standard Dimension. The two people she did carded were Xyz users which with one, she waited for one to finish his match. So while they ended up innocent, they weren't random attacks (especially considering both the carded and Kurosaki are under LDS).
      • Also, Yuya is probably unaware of Serena carding Hokuto.
    • For Sora, he had a long-standing friendship (well, sort of) and he helped Yuzu, in addition to dropping hints that he does care for Yuya. He was mad at Sora for doing bad later on (though Yuto's anger for Heartland may have played a hand in egging him on), but from his perspective, he a) didn't know all of the details and only had Sora's seemingly-OOC Sanity Slippage ramblings he heard, and probably wanted to believe that his friend was lying about being bad, and b) once Sora proves he really is an asshole by carding Hikage, Yuya does see that Sora is impressed by him.
    • For Kurosaki, I don't have much. Maybe he's too sympathetic over him losing his Yuzu and overlooks his past since he now helps them. But comparing those three to Reiji, who in Yuya's eyes, didn't do anything to stop Yuzu from being kidnapped, put Reira in danger, generally being sketchy about every single thing he does despite being on his side, let innocent people be carded, actively antagonized Yuya, and still keeps secrets from the group, the other three probably aren't as bad to him.
  • Episode 72: When Sawatari first activates the effect of "Abyss Actor - Pretty Heroine", Yugo tries to negate it with Clear Wing's effect. However, at this point, Pretty Heroine is Level 4, while Clear Wing's effect only works on monsters Level 5 and above. How could Yugo activate his effect if the conditions weren't right?
    • The effect of Clear Wing Synchro Dragon also works on monster effects that target Level 5 or higher monsters.
  • With Action dueling being prominent during the ARC-V and a field spell is technically activated to scatter action cards around the field, does that mean other kinds of field spell card like Ancient Forest can't be play?
    • Afraid not. It's the same thing like in 5D's, where you can't play field spells in Turbo duels either.
    • Technically, this isn't true; since part of the changes introduced into the game play with ARC-V is that each player can control a field card. It hasn't been clarified as to whether it locks out other fields in these duels.
    • Sergey is confirmed to activate Field Spells during both normal and Riding Action Duels.
  • Does anyone else find it strange that the members of the synchro dimension have cards with effects which in no way can be used without interdimensional interaction? I read up Tuning Magician's anime effect, and even though it was a card that Jack gave to the commons boy, its effect is related to pendulum cards. And neither of the characters involved have relations to other dimensions. Plus, this more than likely happened at a time before Yuya brought pendulum into existence, if the dimension's passages of time flow at the same rate.
    • I assumed it was Yuya transforming the card, but not making it a Pendulum. It's weird either way.
    • That's only the in-game effect. We still don't know what it's anime effect is. Likely, the anime effect doesn't have the Pendulum zone requirements, and Konami added that to the real life card for Competitive Balance.
  • In the flashbacks for Episode 75, why does everyone appear to be the same age as they are present-day? Supposedly, the invasion was started 3 years ago. We also have seen younger versions of Yuya, Yuzu, Gongenzaka, Reiji, and Serena, so it's not as though the show pretends that these teens have never aged.
    • Serena only heard rumors, and it's possible that she was mistaken, or that the feelers were simply being put in place, or possibly even that Heartland was not invaded immediately.
  • Ok, now, I know it was answered in ep 76, but WHAT, IN THE NAME OF THE CRIMSON DRAGON WAS THE COUNCIL THINKING!?!? One thing is to not care about an interdimensional war (fairly dumb if you know about it, at least find how to create an army since something that big is going to come for you sooner or later), but trusting a guy who basically screams "too shady and ambitious to be trusted", and giving him basically free reign for him to basically plan your doom? These guys better get nominated for the Darwin Awards, they completely screwed themselves over and their place falls because of it. No matter what logic you use, the whole set up is caused because the guys in charge are a bunch of morons.
    • The Council's logic was a dick move, but from their perspective makes sense. They didn't trust Roget, which was the whole point: they knew of Academia and thus put Roget in a position to be useful and do their dirty work while also being able to rein him in. The fact that he was so untrustworthy meant that they knew he would be the liaison that they needed. (Not to mention, Security is basically an army). When Reiji showed up, they actually had the smarter option, but they're still being pragmatic. The hole in their plans was the fact that Roget was only in it for himself. And in addition, pay attention to White Taki: throughout that whole scene, that magnificent old jackass isn't worried at all.
  • You know, now that we know Reiji was aware of the mole in the Lancers, is anyone bothered that he did nothing about it? Hell, Dennis has the most Pendulum Monsters out of all of them short of Yuya and Sawatari, and didn't do anything to recover the cards after the jig was up. Makes one wonder if he isn't planning on taking over reality himself, or (as his page notes, being an expy of Lelouch) setting up his own Zero Requiem.
    • It's never actually stated that he knew it was Dennis, and he specifically states that he considered it (he probably took advantage of the Friendship Cup to make sure). In addition, he couldn't reclaim the cards since the Council, Roget and Sora never gave him a chance.
  • Anyone else bothered by how Genre Blind the audience in the Friendship Cup is? I know, everyone looks down on weak monsters but seriously, Sergey just OTK'd Yuzu with a 0 ATK monster, and the next duel, they are underestimating Shinji's monsters and thinking he is throwing his turn away. Did they ever hear about strategy?
    • Presumably, a lot of the audience barely know how the game works and are just there for the spectacle. In modern sports, that's fairly common.
    • We can assume that people are used to cards with major firepower winning duels, especially since the Tops can afford powerful, hard-hitting monsters. Jack's ace has 3000 ATK and is very aggressive in strategy, after all.
  • Episode 78: Why did Sora grab the Idiot Ball and didn't send Yuzu to Academia when she was unconscious right in front of him? If I remember correctly, Sora's whole mission is to bring Yuzu and Serena to Leo Akaba. And he can send people to Academia, as he did with Dennis.
    • Sora still considers Yuzu and Yuya to be his friends, before he was hesitant to go get Serena just because she looks like Yuzu, so he likely didn't want to send her to Academia because she was wounded.
    • Also, Sora's mission is to go after Serena. Not Yuzu.
    • Episode 80 confirms that he doesn't want to capture Yuzu since she's his friend and his mission is indeed just to capture Serena.
  • How did Crow summon Chidori in episode 88? He used two Tuner monsters, unless Raikiri's effect got negated somehow.
    • Blackwing - Decay the Ill Wind's effect in the anime is completely unreadable since the only shot of the card is from a distance, but it appears to have a long text for effect, possibly more than one effects. One of the effects could have negated Raikiri's Tuner status, or do something like "treat a Tuner as non-Tuner". That, or the duel writer simply forgot about Raikiri currently being treated as a Tuner.
  • Why did Yuya panic after having Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon chained up by Barrett's second trap card? Did he grab the Idiot Ball and forget that he has Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon and the two Pendulum Monsters needed to convert Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon to Level 7? Heck, since Barrett only set two face downs, summoning Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon would completely destroy Barrett's field and leave him with only 1000 LP.
    • Plot reasons. Episode 92's summary suggest all four dimensional dragons will appear, so Odd-Eyes and Dark Rebellion can't overlay with each other until that happens.
    • He's panicking because he's trying to end the duel as quickly as possible to help Reira, and a) Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon wouldn't let him win in one turn most likely, and b) even though he could, the damn thing takes a while to summon.
      • He already has all of the conditions for Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon to be summoned though, so it's probably just plot, Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon destroys all of the opponent's monsters and deals the sum of the destroyed monsters' attack points as effect damage to the opponent. Barrett's monster has 1600 ATK and Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon has 3000 ATK, since Barrett has used both of his Trap Cards, he'd be reduced to 2400 LP from Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon's effect and then defeated by its attack unless Barrett's got an effect he can activate from his hand like some of the Kuriboh cards.
      • The episode reveals that Yuya literally cannot summon the card, since Barrett's Beast-borg Medal of the Crimson Chain prevents it, thus turning the discussion invalid.
  • As horrible as this sounds, why doesn't Reiji just try to kill Serena or Yuzu? It's been firmly, repeatedly established that the girls are the key to Academia's plans, and make ridiculous amounts of effort to get them. Killing at least one of them would prevent the girls from getting captured, and would likely doom Academia to complete and utter failure. Reiji even has a ninja for a quick assassination; just a poison blowdart to the back of the head before anyone figures out his plan.
    • We don't know what the four are really, or even what would happen if you did kill them. To use some examples in other shows, killing Avatar the Last Airbender Aang or Korra, for example, would only delay the problem with the cycle restarting. Killing C.C wouldn't work, she'd just come back. Killing Galactus would release something worse. Plus, I recall the Ninja in question commenting he will follow Reiji as long as he's working for the good of everyone, assassination might be pushing it.
  • Episode 101: Why did Gongenzaka destroy "Cipher Chain" instead of "Cipher Shield"? If he had destroyed "Cipher Shield" and then attacked one of Kaito's "Cipher Wing"'s, he could have at least forced a draw, as this would have caused "Cipher Chain" to destroy the remaining "Cipher Wing" and "Underworld Troupe - Big Star", dealing 4200 damage to all players.
    • Probably because at that point, he was aiming to win, rather than draw.
  • If the Xyz dimension was invaded by the Fusion dimension, where were the actual soldiers who used guns, or is there some international law in all dimensions that bans guns, bombs, or tanks?
    • You did see what the Chaos Giants did, right? The first thing that anyone would likely think to do is shoot them, which wouldn't do much, and by the time you realize otherwise, bang. Carded. As a note, the Synchro Dimension do have non-Dueling equipment (admittedly non-lethal).
    • And as it turns out, only Solid Vision can destroy Solid Vision.
  • Episode 120. Crow disabling Sawatari's Duel Disk. Is no one acknowledging how much of a risk that was? It's been clearly shown that Academia Duel Disks can card non-duelists with no problem. If Sawatari's Duel Disk was rendered completely inoperable or destroyed instead of partly disabled as it was, then he would have registered as a valid target and Crow would have been partly responsible for his demise.
    • Crow probably thought that the Battle Beast would only card people it beat, since it cared more about battles and winning than carding people. B.B. just needed to win to survive. With Sawatari out of the way, he wasn't a valid target. Crow either figured this out or decided to take a chance and hope that B.B. would let him go, instead choosing to focus on the actually dangerous target (Crow) instead of a defenseless duelist (Sawatari.) If it's the latter, it's not ''too' much of a risk; Sawatari has an abysmal track record and, despite having some talent for dueling, is vastly outmatched by most other people. He'd definitely lose anyway.
  • Episode 123 why didn't Alexis Ritual Summon Cyber Angel Vrash or any other of Cyber Angels during her duel against Yuri. I mean she could have won and beaten him and not get carded.
    • Because she didn't draw them. Ritual Monsters go in the Main Deck, not the Extra Deck, and because the writers wanted her to lose.
      • I know Ritual Monsters go into the main deck. What I meant was surely she must have say Cyber Petit Angel in her hand to add Vrash to her hand. But also why have her get carded in the end instead of Yuri moving on to duel Sora next and have him card them both after he beats Sora.
      • a) She clearly didn't have it if she didn't use it. b) Yuri lives in the moment. After all, he just mad a speech about how he'd seal everyone in the world into cards, why wouldn't he seal her there and then?
  • This is bugging me. In episode 123 Alexis gets carded by Yuri why was she not mentioned or seen even during the battle with Zarc. She should have helped Aster and Sora dueled Zarc. She was completely forgotten about for 21 episodes until 145 shows shes not carded.
    • She wasn't un-sealed at that point, as the presence of Crow's card clearly indicates. Her card was also likely still in the depths of Duel Academy.
      • Well what I meant why didn't anybody ask Sora what happened to her after her duel with Yuri. Not even Yuya's father bothered to ask considering he's the one who saved her and considers a great duelist nor did Aster or Kite. And also who was holding onto her card after Yuri was defeated?
      • Yuri's there, Alexis is not. It's pretty darn clear that she was sealed into a card. It's likely (never confirmed though) that the card just just left there.
  • I may overlook some episodes/explanation, but did someone mention and/or explain why Standard Dimension's Duel Disk (in this case Yuya's) already had Pendulum Zones before Yuya made his Pendulum Summoning debut?
    • It hasn't yet been mentioned, but the most likely current explanation is that Pendulum Monsters were created in secret (likely by Yusho, who helped created the ARC System and thus the technology for the energy bladed disks) and coded into the Duel Disks and system without anyone's knowledge.
      • While it would work as an explanation, it'd be thematically weird, since there's so much focus on the Pendulums being "Yuya's words" that don't rely on his father. Though that could be an interesting moment; Yuya discovering that even they didn't really come from him, and needing to come to terms with a duel style that suits him...
    • *Did* they have Pendulum Zones? The blades are just continuous blades of light now, they don't have distinct markers for the zones like old models do. I assume they're just wide enough that there's space for the Pendulum Cards to be set, and the magic/tech/whatever in the cards does the rest.
      • If the the blades have been that long since it was created, then why did they make them unnecessarily longer?
      • Plenty of older models have some extra space at either end; just look at the coloured versions of the GX Duel Disks or Sherry LeBlanc's. There are no card zones in that space on those models for obvious reasons, so it's just for aesthetic purposes. Similarly, the extra space on the ARC-V models is probably just extra that turned out to be useful.
      • Leo Akaba Pendulum Summoning might throw an interesting wrench into all of this.
      • It's revealed so far that duel discs from all four dimensions can pendulum summon. Normal duel disc in Synchro Dimension (the one used in Yuya's duel against Tokumatsu), Leo Akaba, Dennis and Kurosaki are evidences (unless the latter three's discs were tweaked). Until the series gives proper explanation (like pendulum monsters and pendulum summoning existed before the dimension was split or something), the whole thing is still vague.
      • The most reasonable explanation is that Zarc and Ray, who effectively willed it into existence, somehow managed to affect the systems or coding of duel disks. It's still a bit sketchy though.
  • Episode 125: How can the parasite enter Yuya's brain through the ear canal? First of all, the ear drum should be in the way (and Yuya can hear even after it enters his brain, so it didn't just pierce the eardrum). I've also added this to the "Anime" subpage under Artistic License – Biology.
    • Despite the existence of the parasite lab, the bugs are implied to be linked to the physical cards held by The Doktor, which means they're probably some form of extremely advanced Real Solid Vision. I wouldn't be surprised if they can shrink themselves small enough to squeeze past the eardrum with minimal damage, then expand once they reach the brain.
      • If subtitle is acurate, in episode 127 Doktor says "I developed Parasite Fusioner in order to explore the possibilities of Real Solid Vision" which more or less implies the bugs are Real Solid Vision creation and after Doktor was carded bracelet girls went back to normal so it holds.
  • As of recent, something's been bothering me about Leo Akaba: If he's really so dedicated to stopping Yuya and his dimensional counterparts from merging back into Zarc... why doesn't he just card Yuri? Yuri clearly trusts Leo, so all Leo would have to do is call Yuri to talk with him, and then when he's not looking, card him at the last second (and it's pretty likely that Leo could beat Yuri in a duel if he needed to). Even if Yugo ends up being absorbed by Yuya and joins Yuto similar to how Nail and Kami reside in Piccolo's head, they still wouldn't turn into Zarc if Yuri weren't around.
    • Maybe Zarc can revive even if one if his alternate selves is carded so it won't matter? There's also the chance that carding any of them might have consequences that affect Leo's plan to revive Ray. Or maybe they can't be carded at all.
    • There is also just stranding him on an island somewhere where Yuri can't be a problem. Starvation works.
      • When trying to convince Reiji to join him, Leo mentions that Zarc's power can only be quelled via a duel, since dueling is where his power came from. What that means exactly in practice is up for debate, but it could be that Zarc and his pieces can't be carded/killed until they lose a duel (one where killing/harming them is the main objective, presumably, or else Yuya would've died forever ago and Yugo would've died fighting Rin). That being said, since Yuri was a dueling prodigy from a young age (this confirmed to be since before Leo ever met him, so that wasn't Leo's bad), Leo probably didn't want to risk trying to take him down and losing too early on. So he worked with what he had and employed Yuri as his main arm, praying he could indoctrinate him to Academia enough that Yuri wouldn't turn on Leo before Leo had countermeasures for him.
      • Assuming you're replying to the Headscratcher I posted, that raises another question: why did Leo allow Yuri to go into the other dimensions then? Unlike Yuya, Yuto, and Yugo, who have reasons to travel to the other dimensions (and aren't taking orders from Leo), the only reason Yuri went to the other dimensions is because he was ordered to. Why didn't Leo just keep him in the Fusion dimension (saying something along the lines of "Well, we need a few strong duelists here in case one of the other dimensions decides to counter-attack or launch a pre-emptive strike, and you're one of the best we have" as an excuse) until he thinks of a way to solve the problem with Zarc? Sure, he'd just be putting off solving the problem (since odds are that one of the other halves of Zarc would eventually stumble into the Fusion Dimension), but by the time he would have to deal with the problem, he'd probably have at least thought of a few possible solutions, and he might have even indoctrinated Yuri by then. Plus, that doesn't explain why he only chooses to try and card Yuya - if he really wanted to stop Zarc, he should have someone else try and card Yuri and Yugo at the same time he's trying to card Yuya.
      • I'll answer this piece by piece:
      • "Why did Leo allow Yuri into the other dimensions": Leo was already keeping Serena under lock and key, which only worked for a couple of years before one of her (multiple) escape attempts succeeded and she made it to Standard. If we assume Yuri is stronger than Serena - which, considering he defeated Ruri, Yugo, Yuzu and possibly Rin (we're never shown a duel and Rin isn't wearing a Disk in her abduction scene, so it's not clear if he dueled her or just chased her down), is probably the case - Leo probably didn't trust his institution's ability to keep him in Fusion, and while he did apparently keep him occupied with grunt work like hunting down runaway students, keeping him out of the dimensional war entirely would've caused problems based on precedent: even if Yuri was completely loyal to the Professor, Serena was as well and that didn't dissuade her from trying to get to the other dimensions to prove herself. Channelling Yuri's raw skill and bloodlust the way Leo did was arguably the least risky route - sending him on infrequent quick, targeted missions on pre-identified and located persons theoretically keeps him off battlefields and decreases the risk that Yuri will run into a counterpart by accident (Leo may not have realized that most of the Zarc counterparts were friends with the Rays, since that wasn't the case for the Fusion pair - and really, knowing what Leo knows about who the counterparts were before the split, why would he ever assume that they'd have a bond?), while preventing him from rebelling for recognition's sake the way Serena did.
      • "Why does he only try to card Yuya": This is a little more handwavey, and I agree that it's a bit silly, but depending on how much detail he got about Yuya's Awakened state from the reports of Dennis the spy and the eyewitnesses from Obelisk Force during the first HITOTSU NI event, Leo might've noticed the differences between Yuya's Awakening and the others (especially if Yuri's ever gone berserk prior to the series; we know from Yuya's first duel with the Pendulums that a toned-down version of the Awakening can happen even when there are no other Zarcs in proximity) and assumed/figured out that Yuya was the "core piece", therefore taking just him down would've solved things - finding out that Yuto was inside Yuya already would've reinforced this belief further. It's still ridiculous that Leo's not doing everything he can to stall the becoming-one, but there's at least a certain logic to it.
  • So does the Supreme King Dragon Zarc card go in the main Deck, Extra Deck, or what? Does it have its own deck? It's a Fusion, Synchro and Xyz monster (which are exclusively for the Extra Deck), but it has orange-brown on it, which are used for effect monsters exclusive to the main Deck. (Unless they're Pendulum monsters sent to the Extra Deck, but that's just Pendulum shenanigans and still originate from the main Deck.)
    • It goes in the Extra Deck, like how Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon and Nirvana High Paladin go into the Extra Deck in spite of being Xyz Pendulum and Synchro Pendulum respectively. Pendulum is a supplemental card type like Gemini and Union, and which deck a card belongs to is dictated by the main type (Normal, Effect, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Ritual and potential future ones).
  • In Episode 145 two things that bugs me. One is why is Asuka/Alexis supporting Leo? I thought she hated his guts after learning that he made students turn people into cards. And two how did she get uncarded when nobody was even holding onto her card during the battle against Zarc I mean I'm glad she's back but how did it happen?
    • Man trying to save his daughter and the people she split into peacefully and clearly regretting his actions. (Although yes, everyone lets Leo off pretty easily.)
    • Everyone was freed at the same time Crow was as part of the reunion of dimensions, regardless of the location of their cards.
  • Episode 147
    • How did Yuya summon Odd Eyes Synchron? Yuya set Performapal Odd Eyes Priest and Performapal Ignition Eagle in his Pendulum Zone and both monsters have a Scale of 3 (Odd Eyes Priest) and 10 (Ignition Eagle) respectively meaning Yuya could Pendulum Summon monsters from Level FOUR to NINE, Odd Eyes Synchron is a Level TWO monster. Yuya already used his one Normal Summon at beginning of his turn so either this is a story mistake (Which even the Japanese Audience was baffled by) or Yuya is blatantly cheating by summoning a monster in an illegal fashion or BOTH (can you guess which one)?
      • This isn't the first time in the franchise stuff like this has happened. They made a mistake is all. It's also possible that next episode will show Priest with a Scale of 1 (it having a Scale of 3 is odd to say the least if they're bothering giving Yuya a Scale 10 to use it with.)
      • Repeat airings of the episode have fixed the issue; Odd-Eyes Priest is now a Scale 1.
    • Why didn't Yuya just let Starve Venom Fusion Dragon get destroyed and use its effect to nuke Reiji by destroying all of his D/D/D Doom King Armageddons and dealing 9000 points of damage to him?

Meta

  • I was going through the YMMV page and found two things that caught my attention. Number 1, why are people less than impressed by Yuya constantly utilizing Pendulum Summons? Isn't that kind of the point? Number 2, why do people hate the Performapal archetype for being weak? With a card like Trump Witch being revealed not too long ago, I think we can expect the archetype to be more powerful and dynamic that people seem to be giving it credit for.
    • People dislike Entermates/Performapals because in the high-tier competitive scene, it's not consistent or powerful enough to regularly compete with more dangerous decks such as Shaddoll, Qliphort, or Necroz.
    • Pendulum Summon is more or less overrated and the reactions are similar to the early reactions to Synchro and Xyz Summoning.
    • "Stop Having Fun" Guys meets Technician Versus Performer. Yuya's all about making a show with elaborate strategies, and the meta-game, which prefers to spam high power monsters as quickly as possible, is offended by his treating something that is Serious Business as *shudder* a game.
    • Performapal had a pretty bad start due to having monsters with poor ATK and DEF and pendulum scales that they couldn't make use of, which probably contributed to the hate. However, they are getting better.
  • I keep on seeing his but why is Sora being compared to Vector? I mean I saw the episode he reminds me more of Bakura you know the original friend turned traitor do people forget that?
    • Vector is largely considered to be an Expy of Yami Marik with a few shades of Bruno and Bakura. Vector is getting referenced since he was in the preceding series. It's just shorter to say Vector.
    • Bakura was not a friend that turned traitor. There were two separate Bakura; Bakura the boy, and Yami Bakura, who was always evil from the start. He DID briefly befriend them, but only in the manga, and it was made clear that he was still evil. Sora is compared to Vector mainly because them being evil is treated as a plot twist.
    • Extra dimensional member of a villain faction that joins the main group as their new friend by posing as a school chum. The similarities are there, though I'm not prepared to call Sora Vector 2.0. Seems much more likely that Sora's going to join the winning team for good. Probably have a 2 on 1 duel alongside Kurosaki, get their asses kicked to show off how super OMG strong Leo Akaba is.
  • This has been bugging me for a while now, but where is it said that Yuya got his pendant from his father? I've watched all the subbed episodes and I don't remember them ever saying that the pendant was a gift from his father. I don't think they ever showed that the pendant was once Yusho's in the first place, either. Am I missing something? Or is the thing about the pendant coming from Yusho just an assumption made by fans?
    • I think it was stated in early promotional materials for the show.
  • If there are four dimensions and ARC-V is the Standard, then where did the other series (Duel Monsters, GX, 5D's, and ZEXAL) take place?
    • DM, GX, and 5D's all take place in the same dimension/world since the 10th Anniversary movie showed them all in the timeline (and said movie is canon to 5D's), GX had multiple references and characters from DM, and 5D's had Ushio. They probably all take place in Standard, too. I never watched ZEXAL completely, but I assume it takes place in the Xyz dimension due to Heartland in Xyz dimension looking exactly like it does in ZEXAL and ZEXAL never had any direct references or connections to the other series as far as I know.
    • As it turns out, episode 126 reveals that it's none of them; they took place in the Original Dimension that was split into four.
      • Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes, Flame Swordsman, Neos, Flame Wingman, Cyber Dragon and Rainbow Dragon appear in episode 15 and 16 of ZEXAL, and they are all well known monsters there.
      • Fusion Monsters (and Ritual Monsters) were used in ZEXAL, so it takes place in Standard. The argument of Heartland being in the Xyz Dimension holds no water since a Duel Academy is present in the Fusion Dimension. As for the Fusion Dimension's Academy looking different to the GX one while Heartland hasn't changed, a lot more time has passed since a GX era than a ZEXAL one, which makes Duel Academy being more different more sensible (as well as the fact that it's effectively a military institution now.) Seriously, this troper needs a mantra for this, for so many people make this mistake...
    • Since certain characters are set to appear, we will know the answer when they do. We simply have to be patient.
    • Episode 100 and some foreshadowings here and there seem to imply the actual state of the world, divided in four dimensions is not it's usual state, and Academia plans to return it to is "true form" by merging the four dimensions. Following that logic, the four series didn't happened in any of the dimensions of arc-v : the world of arc-v would be the usual world which was splitted in four for reasons that have yet to be introduced.
  • Why name Reiji's Monster's "D/D?" Its too similar to the D.D. series. They both stand for Different Dimension, but they're both different series that play differently. Why not give them a different name?
    • In the OCG, the whole D.D series was called Ijigen (some were called D.D, but still stood for Ijigen). The D/D archetype, while also standing Different Dimension, is called that in English. The main difference is D.D is a series (meaning it's a group of cards that have similar themes but no direct support and they usually there to help other decks, like Elemental Lords.) and the D/D is an archetype (meaning they have common terms in the effects and are meant to work together).
  • Can someone explain to me why everyone keeps mistaking the alternate version counterparts of Yuya and Yuzu with the Standard versions? They literally look nothing alike, save for a similar facial structure. There has to be a logical explanation as to why this occurs as there's no way I would believe that Yuya looks anything like his counterparts (save for Yuto who looks the most similar to him but different enough to pass as a completely different person).
    • While it seems unrealistic for people to confuse look-alikes, it's actually more common than you think. People who don't know a person has an identical twin would be confused when they find out. Even after finding out, it's still common to mistake one for the other. You, as an audience member, can easily tell them apart because you have seen that they're not Yuya (You know Yuto isn't Yuya because he's back at You Show) but Yuzu and the others don't know that. The big differences in hair and clothing are mainly for the audience and target demographic (kids) to tell them apart (like the Ninja Turtles different colored masks in the cartoon). Otherwise just relax as this is an important aspect that shouldn't be bogged down from the differences in perspective of Real Life and Animation.
    • Also, this is Yugioh, everyone has ridiculous hair so it's probably ignored.
  • Why has no 5D's music been reused during the Synchro Dim. arc. Seems appropriate to do so.
    • Because this is not Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's?
    • It has been used in the dub on occasion, mainly when Jack summons Scarlight against Yuya in their first duel.
  • Can someone explain why the fuck is Yuzu's name changed to Zuzu in the English dub?? What the fuck is a Zuzu?
    • Ignoring the rudeness, there are a few possible reasons, the primary one likely being to avoid confusing her with the Yu squad as people did on this very wiki. Since the target audience are kids, they literally need the difference to be spelt out. Zuzu likely selected to change the name as little as possible while maintaining the theorized connection to Susan Boyle as a reference to Zuzu's deck.
      • This is the most likely reason, especially considering that the "Yu" in Yuzu's name is slightly different than the "Yu" in the Yu-boys' names in the Japanese version. Specifically, the Yu-boys have a long vowel in theirs (they're actually Yuuya, Yuuto, Yuugo, and Yuuri, although fansubbers usually romanise them with short vowels), while Yuzu has a short vowel in hers. This difference doesn't translate well to English, so they went with something more noticeable.
  • Why is there a Ritual version of Odd-Eyes Dragon (Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon)? Ritual Summoning doesn't seem important enough in both anime and the metagame to have a Odd-eyes dragon version of it.
    • Because those Odd-Eyes monsters were invented for the card game and not the anime. Even if Ritual Summoning isn't as important in the meta, Konami have vowed to (and mostly upheld their promise) include Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz monsters in every pack from Duelist Alliance onwards. The Dark Illusion is the first exception thus far.
  • This has been bugging me since we learned about the Original Dimension. The Duel Disks used in Standard, Fusion, Syncrho and Xyz all have a place for the Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Graveyard. But as for the Duel Disks seen in the Original Dimension, I only seen a place for the Main Deck. Where do the Extra Deck and Graveyard go? Or did I miss them?
    • From the short glimpse of them, they look identical to the original series era disks, which did have a graveyard slot, but didn't have an extra deck slot. Presumably, they just kept them in their pockets. Then, when real solid vision was introduced, each dimension was a Planet of Hats based around the extra deck, and they redesigned their disks with that in mind. (Standard being the exception, but if they were made by LDS, then that would explain it.)
