Hunger

  • Animal Crossing:
    • In Animal Crossing: City Folk, this happens to Wendell when he's hungry.
    • In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, this happens regularly to villagers with the Lazy personality type. A random conversation you can have with these kinds of villagers involves them showing off their "stomach clock", which somehow growls the current time of day. When visiting your house, sometimes their stomachs growl as an indication that they need to go back home. And in another random conversation, these villagers may ask you what your favorite kind of pie is. Your answer will cause them to talk about how good that type of pie is- which causes their stomach to growl.
    • This also occurs to villagers with the Jock personality type in another random conversation. Occasionally they will ask you to look into their eyes and tell them what you think is on their mind. Though the answer options you're given are randomly selected, one of the possible options you can select is "You're hungry". They deny it at first, but their stomach winds up growling right on cue.
    • Finally, the Smug villagers also have an instance. Occasionally when they ask you to fetch some fruit for them, their stomach will growl during the conversation. Unlike the Lazy and Jock villagers (who just have a typical "Growl" onomatopoeia in the text box), the Smug villagers' stomachs actually talk.
    • In the school of the side game Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer Peppy villagers acting as students will have there stomachs growl LOUDLY when spoken to.
    • And in Pocket Camp, it happens to the Cranky Villagers as well when you deliver fish.
  • ANNO: Mutationem: After Ann discovers Sigrid who collapsed from hunger at Freeway 42, she takes her somewhere to recover. Later, after spending time resting, Sigrid wakes up and explains how she got there before her stomach growls.
  • Bug Fables: Before Team Snakemouth heads off for Golden Settlement, Leif's stomach growls as a result of not having eaten in decades. Kabbu's stomach growls shortly afterward, prompting Vi to take the group to visit the local chef which in turns acts as a tutorial for the game's cooking mechanics.
  • The commercial for Dingodile's diner in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time opens with his belly rumbling as he walks through a seemingly non-descript swamp, and catches the scent of food from the off-screen restaurant.
"Ohoho Crikey, I'm starved! Wait, is that... *sniffs* roadkill pie?! Slug and centipede gumbo?! Braised bat tacos with guanamole?!"
  • Creep TV: If the player chooses to do the introductory tutorial, a grumbling sound is heard and the narrator supposes Courage must be hungry, prompting the to get him some dog food. However, the grumbling continues even after Courage eats the food, and it turns out the sound was actually coming from the TV in which Eustace and Muriel are trapped in.
  • In the Didi And Ditto game A Feast For Zolt, Zolt's stomach growls multiple times due to him not being able to find any food, while the food he does find is constantly being taken away from him.
  • At the beginning of Dragon Quest Builders, a flustered Pippa sends the player on a quest to find her some food after being embarrassed by her growling tummy.
  • During Namira's Daedric quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Eola claims to hear the Dragonborn's stomach growling in response to all the corpses kept in Markarth's Hall of the Dead thanks to being a repressed cannibal. Depending on if you want to play as one or not, this is either a fellow cannibal being privy to your secret desires, or a disgusting psychopath messing with your head and projecting her disgusting vices onto you.
  • In Enchanter, this growling stomach comes up as the start of your hunger, meaning that you need something to eat. Sorcerer also has this at the beginning, but luckily, you can get a potion that will indefinitely satisfy both your hunger and thirst.
  • Final Fantasy:
    • In Final Fantasy X, it happens twice to Tidus in the beginning of the game, after washing ashore near Besaid.
    • In Final Fantasy XV, Prompto will sometimes mention this happening to him if the party hasn't rested in a day or so (and thus Ignis hasn't cooked anything for them) though it's not heard.
  • In Freddi Fish 4: The Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch, Luther complains about his stomach growling, but it is never heard.
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses:
    • Unsurprisingly, Raphael's massive appetite results in this happening to him, specifically during his and Ingrid's B-Support conversation where she mistakes the roaring of his stomach for thunder.
    • Ingrid's own stomach growls during her and Yuri's B-Support conversation thanks to the delicious meal Yuri cooked for her. His stomach rumbles shortly after she polishes it off, leaving Ingrid to sheepishly apologize for not saving any food for him.
    • When you share a meal with Caspar and cook one of his favorite dishes, he'll excitedly declare that his stomach's growling just from looking at it.
    • Discussed by Hilda during a perfect tea party, where she'll get a little on edge and randomly tell Byleth "If you hear anything, it's not my stomach grumbling. Just so you know," completely unprompted.
  • Genshin Impact: During her story mission, Mona's belly growls for food on two different occasions: once after the player defeats a few Slimes for her, as well as when the player takes her and Paimon out to eat. Thanks to recklessly spending most of her money to further her career as an astrologist at the expense of her daily needs, flavor text indicates that embarrassing stomach rumbles are a recurring issue for her.
  • At the beginning of Gravity Rush 2, Kat's stomach growls loudly twice due to how exhausted her and Syd are after mining Gravity Ore in Banga Village.
  • No sounds are heard, but when she kills a small game and gathers their meat, Aloy mentions her stomach growling in Horizon Zero Dawn. It seems that spending all day fighting psychotic cultists and dangerous machines does wonders with working up an appetite.
    "That'll keep my stomach quiet."
  • The Legend of Zelda:
    • An infamous example from The Legend of Zelda (NES): In one of the dungeons, you run into a non-hostile Goriya blocking a door. He's extremely hungry and will get out of your way once you give him monster chow. The text that appears above him reads "Grumble... Grumble..." and there are no other hints, which caused no end of frustration for players who didn't realize at first that that wasn't dialogue, but rather the noise the monster's stomach was making.
    • In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly has stomach grumbles incorporated into the background music.
    • When you're talking to Kass' daughters during the Warbler's Nest sidequest in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Genli will ask if you want to hear her "tummy song". Said tummy song is her mimicking the sounds of her stomach's hungry rumbling.
  • In Episode 2 of Life Is Strange, Joyce claims to hear Max's stomach rumbling before serving her breakfast in the diner, although it is never heard. It seems to be a cheerful, motherly exaggeration on Joyce's part.
  • In Little Nightmares, this happens to Six several times within the game. Her stomach rumbles are so bad, that she whimpers and doubles over in pain, losing her ability to run or climb until she is fed. The sequel Little Nightmares II hidden stinger ends with Six's belly letting out an ominous-sounding growl, and a nearby poster of The Maw hints that this is a prequel to the first game, where her hunger only grows stronger from there.
  • In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, if the player's stamina meter becomes too depleted Snake's stomach begins to rumble and continues rumbling until the player makes him eat something to refill the meter. (Enemies can track his location by the sound.)
  • In Minecraft: Story Mode, when everyone's tired and hungry early on the way to the Far Lands in Episode 4, if you idle during one dialog choice after Ivor warns of the dangers of stopping in a swamp, there's a loud growl that everyone initially thinks is a monster, only for Soren to admit it was his stomach.
  • Monster Hunter:
    • If you don't keep your hunter fed in most games and allow their stamina bar to shrink to the smallest size possible, their stomach will constantly growl when they're standing still.
    • Monster Hunter: Rise: Hinoa the Quest Maiden will claim that her tummy's rumbling before you hunt Magnamalo, and urges the hunter to hurry back so they can feast on bunny dango together. Later on, once the player has defeated the true final boss All-Mother Narwa, a hungry Minoto is embarrassed by the loud growling of her stomach, triggering an "Everybody Laughs" Ending.

When Phoenix agrees to break for lunch, she's thrilled, to say the least.
  • Persona:
    • Persona 4:
      • After the hilarious disaster of Chie and Yukiko cooking a horrible dinner that Yosuke called "Mystery X", the group goes to the camps with empty stomachs, and Chie's and Yosuke's bellies interrupt their sleep thanks to their noisy growling.

  • Pokémon:
    • According to its Pokedex entry in Pokémon Gold, Snorlax's stomach growls so loudly that it's easy to mistake for its cry. Given its status as the Big Eater of the Pokemon universe, it's quite a fitting trait to have.
    • During Gloria and Zacian's story event in Pokémon Masters, Gloria and Zacian are very hungry and trying to get as much food as possible for the ultimate buffet experience. And unsurprisingly given her gluttonous tendencies, Gloria's tummy rumbles twice when she smells all the delicious food around her, some of which has been cooked by the likes of master chef Siebold and the surprisingly good-at-cooking Lt. Surge. Jasmine's stomach also growls loudly enough to startle Gloria, who she challenges to a Pokemon battle in hopes of being able to eat a delicious dish Mallow made if she wins.
    • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers: This occurs during regular gameplay and in cutscenes. An especially noteworthy example is in the cutscene following the battle with Drowzee, where the player's thoughts are interrupted by the partner's stomach growling, and the player chimes in as well.
    • Pokémon Café Remix: Mewtwo's stomach growls in an advertisement for the Mewtwo's Hunger event, as well as in the game itself in the intro for the Mewtwo's Return event. In both cases, it's done as a gag, with Mewtwo's stomach interrupting its attempts at being intimidating. And in the Koraidon's Three Supreme Dishes event, Koraidon's stomach growls as it rears back to let out a roar. While the instance of Mewtwo's stomach growling in-game is text only, Koraidon's actually has an accompanying sound effect. The scene used for Koraidon was later recycled for Miraidon in the event titled "Hungry Miraidon".
  • In the Wii version of Punch-Out!!, both King Hippo and Bear Huggers' stomachs growl during one of each of their Between-Round animations.

"If I had known it was going to take this long, I would have packed more jam."
  • Tales of...
    • In one of Tales of Berseria's many comedic skits, a hungry Magilou tries to avoid having to admit to wanting something to eat by asking Velvet about her own hunger in an insensitive, roundabout way. When the party admits to wanting to stop for food, she denies her hunger and smugly tries to make fun of them for getting fired up about food... only for her roaring stomach to give her away.
    • If you don't allow the party to eat anything for a while in Tales of Vesperia, several cutscenes will play hinting that it's a conscious choice on behalf of the party. The first indicates that it's due to dieting for Judith, Rita, and Estelle, whose growling stomachs startle the boys due to thinking they were taking their hunger in stride. It also happens to Karol in the second skit, who is furious about the party being forced to fast.
    • Milla's stomach rumbles twice in Tales of Xillia, but instead of it being a source of embarrassment it merely amuses her. Since she's a newly depowered spirit, she's never had to deal with hunger until now and views it as a fascinating aspect of the human condition.
    • This happens to Elle in Tales of Xillia 2, whose growling belly defuses the tension while the party is discussing threats they've encountered in the parallel worlds with Bisley Bakur at the end of Chapter 7. Milla and Bakur are amused, while the poor girl's just embarrassed.
  • In The Walking Dead: Season Two Episode 1, Clementine's stomach growls due to hunger, and she stops at an abandoned campsite to look for food with the help of a dog she's befriended. Unfortunately, he's hungry too, and when she starts eating, drama ensues.

Gas and/or gut trouble

  • In Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, sometimes when Crash obtains a gem/crystal/relic from a level, his stomach rumbles before he throws it up.
  • The grotesquely obese Darlene Fleischermacher from Dead Rising 3 is not only constantly farting and belching, but her stomach can frequently be heard churning and rumbling due to gas thanks to all the food she's constantly eating. It's the perfect way to highlight just how disgusting she is, and it gets particularly loud during the nauseating death scene where she chokes to death on her own vomit.
  • In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Bowser complains about his stomach gurgling, obviously due to indigestion, after being gorged with fatty food to the point where his weight caused him to break through the floor. • This happens to Johnny from Metal Gear whenever his IBS flares up.

  • One of the Diagnostics patients from Trauma Team has stomach problems partially related to Rosalia infection.
