• At one point, Gerry strikes up a friendship with a prisoner on day release, who gives him a seagull named Alecko, which Larry refers to as an albatross. At the end of the chapter, it turns out the prisoner had murdered his wife, and Larry explains why he didn't find this at all surprising:
  No-one but a murderer would have thought of giving Gerry that albatross.
