  • During the Purification ritual, it is revealed that people in Offshore cannot have children and anyone entering must be sterilized. We see one of the chosen contestants hesitating and almost giving up the chance to go to Offshore altogether. Despite having the opportunity to leave, Bernardo still stops her. The reason why is most likely because no one except those in Offshore know of this secret. If anyone in the Inland were to find out that no one in the Offshore can have children, this would give them, and especially The Cause, a giant leverage. Bernardo most likely stopped the girl in order to save her life. Had she decided to quit, Ezequiel would have probably had her killed, ensuring the secret stays hidden.

  • It’s not a coincidence that the show has Brazilian origins. It’s a very strong metaphor for the Brazilian favelas (or slums). In cities like Rio de Janeiro, favelas are strictly divided from the upper incomes of the city by a wall. The Inland also looks very similar to the favelas.

  • Since Season 1, you may notice that the Process' candidates usually get their full names dropped, but the operators are constantly Only One Name, even if they're as prominent as Ezequiel. Come Season 2, and Rafael explains that in the Offshore, they don't use surnames. ("Everything from the Inland is left behind.") This makes sense, considering that reproduction is forbidden within the Offshore, and the only "children" they have are the 20-year-olds approved by the Process. This means they don't form traditional family groups, so there's no point in using family names.
    • In fact, this detail holds a deeper meaning: since this is a way of concealing relations, it's likely that the intention is to estrange the approved candidates from their reproved relatives. This would prevent Nepotism to get in the way of the meritocracy, as evidenced by the cold way Marcela treats her son Marco Álvares, regardless of "their past". "Everything from the Inland is left behind" indeed.
