** Look closely at Kaylee when Simon "says" "I'd be there right now." She's giving River a very accusatory look. Either because of the gun thing weighing on Kaylee's mind, or "if you weren't here, there'd be nothing keeping Simon and me apart." Lending weight to River saying that if she left, people would be free "to be with the people they want."

* Related to River going barefoot. One might worry about the possibility of River accidentally stepping on something, or stubbing her toe, injuring her feet. She sometimes doesn't even really look where she's talking (like when she was venturing through the death ship in "Bushwhacked"). But, then you remember she is psychic. Whatever is in front of her while walking, she can automatically sense it, and likely know it's location, and then easily step around it.

* One of the reasons River goes barefoot often. Simon couldn't pack any clothes for River, and all her clothes are hand-me-downs. It's unlikely they had much footwear that was her foot size, or within it. So the boots she's wearing may not be her size, possibly larger, based on Mal's comment about "pitter-patter of tiny feet in big combat boots". Thus, being barefoot would just be more comfortable for her.

* The name of Mal's ship: Serenity. As in, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change." After the Browncoats lost the war, they had to come to terms with the fact that the Alliance wasn't going anywhere and they couldn't change that. Mal, meanwhile, is bitter about losing the war, even though he has built a new life for himself with his crew on Serenity. Mal doesn't notice that he is living on a metaphorical silver lining and continues to harbor resentment about the war, even though he has been given all the serenity he needs, if he would just accept that he can't change the power of the Alliance and focus on the bright side.

These are not fridge brilliance but examples of the writers not understanding physics. A spacecraft that has had it's engine stopped is not going to stop moving in a vacuum because of inertia. "Explodeyness" of a hatch blowing open would have negligible effect. Likewise, a spacecraft that size would not cool so quickly and the fact that it normally has an engine and must have some means of cooling itself does not matter - there have been many times that they have shown the Serenity drift with it's engine off without suddenly getting colder, showing that whatever system they have of dealing with the engine's heat, it does not run constantly or (more likely) is made to only cool components heated by the engine.

* Out of Gas has two relating to common space tropes:
** The ship being "dead in the water". The blast at the beginning of the episode burst out of the cargo bay door... which is located under the cockpit. The burst of air and explodey-ness necessarily took away some of their motion, and if the gravitic drive was completely nonfunctional after the original blast, it could have taken away all of the remaining motion. A better word would have been "floundering", but if gravitic drives fail closed, they could have been dead in the water.
** Similarly, the ship being "cold". Normally, space is a good insulator, as radiating heat is an inefficient way to release heat, so everyone getting progressively colder doesn't seem to make sense. Except for the fact that the ship is carrying an enormous, heat-generating engine. One of the biggest problems with spacecraft is that they have to vent their heat buildup constantly lest the ship overheat. So Serenity is almost certainly built to radiate away all the heat produced by its engine and crew and other systems. Without a running engine to provide heat, the ship will be radiating a lot of current heat without any more being added... and the interior of the ship will get cold, quick.

** In addition to that, this is soon after the episode where Kaylee saw River shoot without looking, telekinetically precisely hitting all those soldiers. So River is also saying "Kaylee, defend me. Tell them what you saw. Tell them that I can handle a gun."

** It also could be something of a threat--that the Operative will follow them and the crew would be putting any of their friends and allies in danger if they went to them for help.

** Another possibility was that Independent elements were already taking root in the outer worlds of the 'Verse before Miranda, and the Pax project was developed to stop the civil war before it happened. If the drug worked, the Alliance could simply gas the rebellious planets and calm their populations so they'd submit to Alliance rule quick and easy. But when the experiment on Miranda went horribly wrong, the Alliance was forced to go with a military solution to the growing rebellion, triggering the Unification War.

** The standoff after Mal is shot doesn't seem to make much sense at first blush: First, Mal has already been shot. Why does he just hold the pirates' captain at gunpoint instead of returning fire? Second, the pirates outnumber Mal and have him surrounded. They could easily kill him and take the ship. Why do they back down? The answer to both is that they were acting in pragmatic self-interest. If Mal had returned fire, he knew he would probably be overwhelmed and killed even if he managed to tag one or two of them, and he's pragmatic enough to put survival ahead of revenge. If he has the drop on one of them, they have a vested interest in de-escalating and Mal might get out alive. From the pirates' perspective, once Mal has the drop on the captain, they might kill him, but there's no guarantee he wouldn't take at least one of them down with him and that's not a risk they want to take.

** They might have spent all the big bucks on getting the Core Worlds comfortable (even if all those arboreal gardens were each indoors), then did what they could to make the Border worlds merely livable, what with the Border Worlds being spaceHoovervilles.
