Fridge Brilliance
- When I first began to read Extended Stay, it seemed to be nothing more than just a Warden/Mistress fanfic. Don't get me wrong: I really love the pairing but I didn't really think it would go beyond a contrived situation. It wasn't until the very last chapter that it seemed to dawn on me that the family was going to follow in the footprints of the Julio-Claudian family, which even back in Roman times was very fucked up. (Not to mention the fact that the Warden and Mistress making their youngest child the next in line for world dictatorship is rather reminiscent of North Korean politics as well.)
- Then you have the twins Maddie and Ethan. I actually suggested these names from a pair of Star-Crossed Lovers in Edith Wharton's novel Ethan Frome; then when I looked up what they meant, I was utterly surprised that the meanings both had something to do with power and strength. Matilda, specifically, means "powerful in battle" in German.
- Also when you consider that we saw the twins as little kids hurting other prisoners, something tells me history will repeat itself with these two.
