Fridge / Doctor Who S30 E10 "Midnight"

Go To

  • The Doctor complains to Donna in the prologue that "it's no fun if I see it on my own!" Sure, the entertainment system was annoying, but it seems the Doctor had an ulterior motive in disabling it — he was hoping to make a friend who could serve as a temporary Companion and watch the Sapphire Waterfall with him.
  • It was no idle boast when the Doctor said the other passengers would have to go through him if they wanted to throw Sky out of the airlock. This is a man who has fought in countless battles and duels, and knows more martial arts than any human could, with a "fightin' hand," against at most half a dozen civillians. He could have tossed them aside or disabled them all if he had to — but he didn't want to have to, and then he got too close to Sky one too many times, and he was frozen, no longer able to defend himself, let alone anyone else. It was a much bigger reversal than it appeared on the surface.
  • The entity learns how to take over its victim by repeating when they talk. The Doctor disabled the onboard entertainment system so that the passengers would talk to each other. Maybe it was the very fact that they were talking to each other that attracted the entity to this particular bus... nice going, Doctor!
  • Bit of a meta one. Why is this monster generally considered one of the scariest? Because for the audience, no matter how bad the odds, as long as the Doctor is there, we feel like it's going to be all right somehow. But when Humans Are the Real Monsters and the Doctor is paralyzed, alone, and utterly helpless, that's when Rule of Scary really kicks in.
  • Fridge Logic: Why did the creature rip away the front part of the craft? All it did was stop the Crusader 50 from going back to civilisation and letting it walk free with its new body.
    • Actually Crusader 50 wasn't going back to civilisation at all, since it broke down well before the cabin was sliced off - though we can assume that had something to do with the Entity as well. The driver sent out a request for a rescue vehicle, that was what would take them back. As for why it ripped off the cabin, it was most likely something to do with how it got inside the craft to possess Sky since the walls were still intact and Sky was right by the cabin when she became possessed.
  • The Doctor urges the driver and mechanic to lift the shield on the cabin window and look out. That may also have been what allowed the entity to see in and learn there were people inside the vehicles, setting off the whole attack. Once again, nice job breaking it, Doctor!
  • Fridge Horror: Absolutely nothing is supposed to be alive on this planet, and the shuttle only encountered the entity by passing through unfamiliar terrain. Unless this entity is the last remnant of its race, there are probably thousands (or more) of others; for all we know they roam the surface constantly as nomads. It may take centuries or more, but this situation is almost certain to happen again. And maybe it already has.
    • Fortunately that's unlikely to happen again, considering the Doctor convinced the resort to shut down and abandon the planet.
    • And, more importantly, he plans to convince the authorities to place warnings for any future potential hosts/victims to stay away from the planet completely.
      • Which is exactly the sort of thing that attracts any number of Who Villains (TM), which leads to some future Doctor needing to go back there.
