With The Reveal that Fat Charlie also has some reality warping powers, his exceptionally boring and unlucky life can be partly explained by him subconsciously causing this to happen to him.
From Heartwarming page: Mr. Nancy visiting Fat Charlie's mother in the hospital in usual Large Ham fashion: leading a brass band playing "Yellow Bird", her favorite song. And then he uses his powers to get her cancer to go into remission so she can do what she always wanted to do - travel the world. She ends up dying content in her sleep in a hotel on St. Andrew's Island, where she was born. Why can he do that? Because Anansi owns all the stories and that happening makes for a much better story than she dying in the hospital, sad and alone, with only their son by her side. Being a god of stories has its perks.
Anansi gets to win betting on horses and dog racing for the same reason: once he and his family are desperately in need of money, him winning big to save his family turns into an underdog story. He can win big but never too big to change status quo by turning them into millionaires. Status quo is literally god in this case.
Fridge Horror:
Okay, Spider raped Rosie. She thought that he was Charlie when she had sex with him. That is considered rape by fraud. Why is everyone okay with this?
Because that kind of messed-up thing happens with gods all the time in mythology. She also didn't sleep with him because he was "Charlie", but because of his own charm. She was also confused about her complicated feelings, and Spider wasn't exactly happy about the deception himself. If she chooses to forgive him, that's really their affair.
