is an upcoming comic book movie based on the Marvel Comics
character and Spider-Man villain of the same name
, currently set to be played by Tom Hardy
. With production being handled entirely by Sony and no involvement with Marvel Studios, it is being produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach (both of whom were producers on The Amazing Spider-Man Series
, and the former being a producer of many
past Marvel Comics-based movies, including the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy
as well as Iron Man
and The Incredible Hulk
with Kevin Feige) and set to be directed by Ruben Fleisher with a script written by Dante Harper (who wrote the initial screenplay for Edge of Tomorrow
). A release date is set for October 5th, 2018.
Venom provides examples of:
- Adapted Out: In the comics, the Venom symbiote was initially worn by Peter Parker as a Spider-Man suit before eventually separating and bonding with Eddie Brock. However, it's been indicated that the movie may possibly skip out on any connection to Spider-Man whatsoever, not even in passing.
- Breakout Villain: It's a solo film starring one of the most famous members of Spidey's Rogues Gallery.
- Darker and Edgier: Following in the footsteps of both Deadpool and Logan, the movie will aim for a hard R-rating, making it this trope in comparison to all previous Spider-Man movies.
- Shared Universe: Interestingly, the movie is not set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (even whether or not Spider-Man himself will appear has yet to be determined). Instead, it will be a stand-alone film, set in its own continuity and intended to kick off Sony's own Shared Universe of Marvel films (not unlike Fox's X-Men Film Series or the planned Spider-Man Shared Universe of films Sony was planning prior to the character's integration in the MCU), which will also include a female-centric movie starring Silver Sable and Black Cat.
