Professional Heroes vs. Amateur Heroes

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger vs. Abaranger is a 2005 direct-to-video movie which depicts a crossover between Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger and Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger, part of the annual Super Sentai "Vs. Series". It was released direct-to-video on March 25, 2005.

This movie contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Back from the Dead: Sauneel Gingko can resurrect practically anyone, he brings back Bon Goblin, Ben G, Succubus, Genio, Millibar as well as Mikoto and Top Galer, albeit only temporarily, because if he dies all the revived beings die as well.
  • Badass Boast: One of the most awesome examples ever, from Mikoto. Bonus points because not only it is entirely justified, but to top it off Mikoto rubs the villains' mistake in their face by putting it in plain words what everyone now has seen: that he just outright trumps the Big Bad in terms of raw power.
Saunagingan: What is this? We were supposed to have resurrected the strongest denizen of Hell!
Mikoto: And you expected someone else?
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall:
    • When Kazakh threatens Abrella's life if the whole Sauneel Gingko/Dezumozorya deal fails, the latter pulls out an Abaranger magazine to check if Sauneel Gingko was really the best option he could get to give to Kazakh.
    • Not in-universe itself but Jasmine/DekaYellow briefly did the ending credits Abaranger dance and mentioned that it was a loop in Ryouga/Abared's head.
  • Big Bad: Gijinfuan Kazakh. Who plans to resurrect Dezumozorya with Sauneel Gingko's help and use his power to install his criminal house on the Earth and rule it.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Subverted in the case of "Hurricane Red", who seemingly shows up to assist the Abarangers only to reveal himself to be Kazakh in disguise and promptly attack them with their guards lowered.
  • The Cameo: Other than Ryunosuke and Yatsudenwani who have a brief part in the plot early on the Abaranger supporting cast like Mahoro Mai and Emi only appear in the party at the end. This includes both forms of Lije despite them no longer existing so presumably these are just the identical lookalikes from Abaranger's final episode.
  • Continuity Nod: In a rare nod to the previous Vs. movie outside of anniversaries, Kazakh assumes the form of Hurricane Red to trick the Abarangers with Ryoga outright recognizing him.
  • Crossover: Between Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger and Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Mikoto/AbareKiller join the heroes, the fight against bad guys becomes a cakewalk to the point that in the giant fight Dekaranger Robo and DekaBike Robo are enough to flatten both giant monsters at once and the Abaranger only join in so Killer and Top can fight one last time before they depart to the afterlife.
  • Exact Words: Also a case of Did Not See That Coming. The villains' plan to resurrect the strongest being in the afterlife. They fully expected said being to be Dezumozorya but they ended up resurrecting Mikoto/Abarekiller and Top Galer instead.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why did Top Galer address Mikoto as "Human" again when he addressed Mikoto by his name prior to their Heroic Sacrifice back in their own series? The other Abarangers were present. Top Galer has never addressed Mikoto by his name in front of them.
  • Greater-Scope Villain:
    • Dezumozorya. He may be long dead, but his actions still influence the plot and his resurrection is Kazakh's goal.
    • Abrella is a downplayed example, he does provide Kazakh with information on Sauneel Gingko's powers and location, but otherwise he has no goals aside from getting his payment and has no further influence on it.
  • In the Name of the Moon: For the Vs. movie, both teams give their roll call in succession. In this case, the previous team (Abaranger) goes first, followed by the current team (Dekaranger).
    Ryouga: "Bursting energy!note  AbaRed!"
    Yukito: "Explode Seriously!note  AbareBlue!"
    Ranru: "Dashing with courage!note  AbareYellow!"
Asuka: "The invincible soul of the Dragon People!note  AbareBlack!"
Mikoto: "The finest example of excitement.note  AbareKiller!"note
    Ryouga: "The Iron DinoGuts!"
    Abarangers: "Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger!"
Ban: "One, to hate inhuman crimes!"
Hoji: "Two, to pursue mysterious cases!"
Sen: "Three, to investigate using futuristic technology!"
Jasmine: "Four, the hideous evil of space..."
Umeko: "Five, ...to exterminate them with all possible speed!"
    Dekarangers: "Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger!"
Tetsu: "To attack wicked evil! To smash the darkness of fear! The Daybreak Detective, Deka Break!"
Doggie: "Cutting down hundreds of evildoers! Hell's Police Guard Dog, Deka Master!"
Ban: "When pros and amateurs unite..."
Ryouga: "A new power is born!"
    Ban: "We are...note "
    All: "Super Sentai!"
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The roar of Top Galer, coming just as the Big Bad has his plans come to fruition.
  • Mr. Exposition: Abrella gives information on Sauneel Gingko's powers to Kazakh such as his origins and powerset.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • When he and Ban protect Yatsudenwani from Kazakh as well as the jewel, Ryoga decides to make a call to his daughter Mai (who is currently in Hollywood), leaving Ban alone, which allows Kazakh to steal Sauneel Gingko's gingko batteries from Yatsudenwani in order to use them to revive Dezumozorya.
    • In the same boat, Yatsudenwani taking Sauneel Gingko's jewel and not guarding it properly.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Sauneel Gingko and Kazakh were fully expecting to bring back Dezumozorya, they got Abarekiller and Top Galer instead, who help the Abaranger and Dekaranger to utterly destroy them and their minions.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Both Sauneel Gingko and Kazakh try and flee once the resurrected monsters are wiped out but are caught in the act, forcing Kazakh to ditch his partner to escape and activate his Industrial Machine to get revenge.
  • Super Prototype: Sauneel Gingko was meant to be the first Trinoid (hence him being Trinoid #0) but his power exceeded Mikaela's expectations who sealed him inside a jewel out of fear, he later was forgotten but eventually found by Yatsudenwani who brought him to Dino Curry's HQ as an office decoration.
  • Transformation Sequence: Unlike the Vs. movie that came before and the one that would come after, Dekaranger vs. Abaranger forgoes the specially shot blend of the two teams transforming and instead opts for Stock Footage. Abare Killer, as always, just transforms on the spot.
  • Versus Title: As with the other Sentai team-ups, though the "vs." here is more of an ideological clash and misunderstandings as opposed to a full-on battle.
