A 1992 American Crime thriller written and directed by Howard Franklin that follows an infamous paparazzo (Joe Pesci) investigating a gangster that soon leads him into a dangerous world. Executive produced by Robert Zemeckis.

The movie also stars Barbara Hershey, Stanley Tucci, Jerry Adler, Dominic Chianese, Richard Riehle, Max Brooks, Richard Schiff, Christian Stolte, Del Close, Jack Denbo, Timothy Hendrickson, and Lisa Christakis.

It was released on October 14, 1992.

Not to be confused with the 1972 British Mia Farrow-starring film with the same namenote  or the British TV series Public Eye.


Tropes for the film:

  • Big Applesauce: Takes place in New York in the 1940s.
  • If It Bleeds, It Leads: Benzy, a 1940s tabloid photographer. At one point someone mentions that guys like him always carry a pin in case they find an abandoned baby. They stick the baby with the pin before taking the picture because the newspapers pay extra for pictures of crying babies.
  • Paparazzi: Benzy (inspired by "Weegee" Fellig). As it's noir film, he's portrayed more as an Anti-Hero.
  • Tagline: "Murder. Scandal. Crime. No matter what he was shooting,, "The Great Bernzini" never took sides, he only took pictures...Except once".
