* AdaptationDeviation: Besides the changes already covered by other tropes above and below, there are some other notable changes to the story:
** In the book, the scene with the leeches happens when the boys come across a pond next to the tracks and go SkinnyDipping. In the book, they try to take a shortcut and end up falling into the pond fully clothed.
** In the book, the confrontation between the protagonists and Ace's gang happens during a thunderstorm. In the movie, the sky is clear.
** The movie does not reveal if Ace and his gang ever followed up on their threat to get back at the protagonists someday. In the book, they do indeed severely beat all four boys some time after returning home.

* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: In the night, the four boys hear piercing cries in the woods that might be a wildcat or some other animal....and might be Ray Brower's screaming ghost. Gordie, half in and out of sleep, sees—or thinks he sees—"something white and shapeless steal through the trees like a grotesquely ambulatory bedsheet." Given that this ''is'' adapted from a Stephen King story, there's no telling what it actually was, although the movie implies it was nothing more than wolves and coyotes howling.

* WorldOfJerkass: The four boys don't have easy lives: Teddy and Chris have physically abusive fathers (Teddy's father nearly killed him in a fit of rage by holding his head to a stove), Gordon's parents seem to despise and ignore him, all four boys are terrorized by Ace and his gang of fellow hoodlums (two of whom are Vern and Chris's bullying older brothers), and apparently even the teachers at the school are scumbags: one teacher stole lunch money to buy herself a new skirt and blamed the theft on Chris, knowing she could get away with it because of his family's bad reputation.

And of course, there's also Milo the junkman, who sadistically taunts Teddy.
